1.5 Significances of the Analysis
This analysis may help the readers to understand the usage of clauses. This analysis will be useful for them because with this analysis it can make the readers
easier to understand the clauses that found in the text or discourse and can be advantageous especially to the students of English Department who are interested
in studying or research about clauses. Further, this analysis can help the students to understand much more about clauses, structure of clauses, and the category of
clauses. I also hope this analysis can help those who are interested in analysing clauses. It is also expected that there would be some people who would like to
develop the analysis of the clauses.
1.6 Review of Related Literature
The following books are the main sources in finding data and information for this analysis, they are:
Goran 1976:58 in his book “Lingusitic Units and Items” states that a
clause is syntagm having typically a subject and predicate and possibly complement to these segments.
Downing 1995:11 in her book “Syntax” states that an independent
clause is complete in itself, whereas dependent clause is necessarily related to an independent clause.

Cook, 1971:65 in his book “Introduction to Tagmemic Analysis” states
that a clause is a group of words that forms part of sentence and that contains a subject and a predicate
Chaer 1994:231 in his book “Linguistik Umum” states that “Klausa
adalah satuan sintaksis berupa runtunan kata-kata berkonstruksi predikatif.” Many linguists and researcher have done the research about clauses and I
take some of them as the references to develop my thesis. Halliday is a linguist that has done the research about clauses and the
result of his research is a theory about clause, he states that “Language enables human beings to build a mental picture of reality, to make sense of what goes on
around them and inside them. Here again the clauses plays central role, because it embodies a general principle for modelling experience-namely, the principle that
reality is made up of PROCESSES” Halliday 1994:106 Another researcher that has done about the research of clauses is Siti
Wachidah from UNJ Universitas Negeri Jakarta. She analyzed clauses in Indonesian language from 15 texts on various topics from eight-well known
newspaper in Indonesian language. The clauses were analyzed to find out whether and to what extent the theory applies in Indonesian language. Result indicates a
high degree of consistency of the theory in the construction of clauses in Indonesian language.
In this thesis I use Cook’s theory that divides the category of clauses, from the distribution unit which consist of Independent and dependent clause.
Independent divides in two parts; verbal and non-verbal clause whereas the

dependent clauses divided into three parts they are adjective, noun and adverb clause. Cook 1971:67.
