1982: 189. In this study, a feminist approach is used to analyze and find out the idea of
feminism that is reflected through the main female character in the screenplay. This study focuses on liberal feminism. In which the female main character reflects
liberal feminism values through her characterization since she experiences the freedom and gender equality in her life.
C. Method of the Study
This study used a library research method to analyze the script of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. A library research method was used to gather the information,
approach, and the theories related to this study. The information, approach, and the theories are gathered from books, dictionary, encyclopedia, and the other written
sources which are related to the topic and analysis of this study. There are two kinds of sources that are needed in this study, these two kinds of sources are primary
source and secondary sources. The primary source of this study is the screenplay of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while the secondary sources are other books and references
related to this study, such as A Glossary of Literary Terms by M. H. Abrams, A Qualified Defense of Liberal Feminism by Susan Wendell, Feminist Theory and
Literary Practice by Deborah L. Madsen, Feminist Thoughtby Rosmarie Tong, Writing the Range: Race, Class, and Culture in the Women’s Westby Elizabeth

There were several steps in analyzing this screenplay. The first step was reading and re-reading closely the script several times in order to get a deep
understanding of the story. While reading the screenplay, the problems were formulated and focused on an issue in the story, and this study focuses on the
feminism issue of the screenplay. The second step was finding the theories that were needed to analyze the screen play in order to get the answer to the problem
formulation. The first theory was the theory of character and characterization and the second theory was the theory of liberal feminism. The third step was finding the
answer of the first problem formulation by applying the theory of character and characterization. The theory of character by M. H. Abrams and theories of
characterization by Reaske and Boggs were used to analyze the characterization of Jane Smith. The next step was finding the answer to the second problem
formulation. Theories of liberal feminism by Madsen and Rosmarie Tong were used to analyze liberal feminism values that were depicted in Jane characterization in the
screenplay. The last step was making a conclusion after the two problem formulations were answered, and the conclusion was made based on the analysis.
