CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
A. Object of the Study
The object of this study is a screenplay written by Simon Kinberg. The title of the screenplay is Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This screenplay consists of 121 pages. This
screenplay has been produced as a film with the same title on June 10, 2005 in the United States and Canada and this film was directed by Doug Liman. In the opening
weekend, this film was on the top of the ratings. In general, this script tells about a husband and wife in which the wife has a
higher position compared to the husband, and in which the wife seems to have power in the whole story in the script. Actually both the husband and wife have the
same job as assassins in different agencies, they are considered as professional assassins. As a woman, Jane Smith, chooses to be a career woman and a wife. She
does her duties as a career woman and also as a wife. She always comes home on time and prepares for dinner before her husband arrives at home. Although she is a
wife and does her duties as a wife, she also does whatever she wants, she seems has power, not only her husband. When she has an opinion or idea, she says it to her
husband. She also bravely defends herself from her enemies, she knows what she should do when the enemies come to attack her. Even when the enemy was her
husband, she can protect herself. Finally, at the end of the story she cooperates with her husband to fight against their agencies.
B. Approach of the Study
This study focuses on the freedom and equality between men and women. So, that makes this study use a feminist approach to do the analysis to find out the
answer to the problem. According to Paglia in Feminist Theory and Literary Practice
states, “Feminism denies the legitimacy of social intervention in any area of life that would constrain the right of the individual to pure self-
determination” Madsen, 2000: 24. It means that people have freedom to do anything without any
oppression or pressure from the others. They have freedom that is granted by the law, as long as their activities and choices are not breaking the law they are
permitted to do that. Jo Freeman in Women: a Feminist Perspective states “All
human beings, including women, should enjoy the rights they have as human beings. Women have freedom of argument that maintains them free to choose
1975: 39. In this context, the freedom relates to women, which form a feminism perspective concerns on women’s position and freedom.
Tal king about women’s position and freedom, feminism has liberal feminism
in which this feminism focuses on gender equality. Zillah Einsten in The Sexual Politics of the New Right: Understanding
the “Crisis Liberalism” states “liberalism as an ideology has promised certain crucial values, such as individual autonomy,
freedom of choice, equality of opportunity, and so on 1982: 189. Here, the gender equality that is discussed is that women have choices and freedom to do anything
that men can do. Liberal feminism sees the men as the role model of women, this feminist perspective does not want to make women become more than men, but
equal. Equality here is equality in politics, economy, and also education. Zillah PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
Einsten in The Sexual Politics of the New Right: Understanding the “Crisis
Liberalism” states “liberalism as an ideology has promised certain crucial values, such as individual autonomy, freedom of choice, equality of opportunity, and so on
1982: 189. In this study, a feminist approach is used to analyze and find out the idea of
feminism that is reflected through the main female character in the screenplay. This study focuses on liberal feminism. In which the female main character reflects
liberal feminism values through her characterization since she experiences the freedom and gender equality in her life.
C. Method of the Study
