4.2.2 The Students’ Major Problems in Using Internet for Academic Purposes
The major problem of the sixth semester ELESP students in the academic year of 20092010 was the slow Internet connection in the campus. The free Internet
access which is provided by the campus was in slow connection. This problem somehow influenced the motivation of the use of Internet. Beside the major problem,
other problems were following such as difficulty in deciding the valid and reliable sources or materials, confusing with too much information in the results of searching,
difficulty in searching or difficulty in using search engine effectively. The minor problems in using Internet for academic purposes were some of the students disliked
using Internet and preferred to printed materials, and some of the students mentioned their other problem i.e. they had to pay for downloading something from Internet.
4.2.3 The Students’ Recommendations to Solve the Major Problems in Using
Internet for Academic Purposes
The various recommendations were recommended by the students. Some recommendations were helpful, but some were impractical. The most recommended
suggestion was asking campus management to increase the speed of the Internet connection, but it seems a little bit difficult to realize it since the campus
management’s policy is beyond the control of the students. Other recommendations were accessing the Internet not in rush hours, or just go to the Internet café, but of
course for some students, those were not good recommendations either.

Some of the students suggested not to ban any websites such as Facebook, Youtube, etc. This suggestion was contrary with their suggestion to increase the
speed of the Internet connection. It is because allowing access to these websites will make the Internet connection slow since these websites require huge bandwidth.
There were also some misconceptions of the students about the valid and reliable sources like all .com, .pdf, or personal blogs were not valid or reliable.
However, the suggestions that the university should provide reliable sources and the lecturers should recommend the students the valid and reliable sources or materials
were good recommendations. On the other hand, the recommendations to solve the problem of difficulty in
confusing with too much information in the results of searching were almost the same as the recommendations in deciding the valid and reliable sources or materials such as
checking the author, reference, link, institution; choosing the .pdf, .org, .edu domains; finding the latest; excluding the .com domain, Wikipedia or blog websites; comparing
with other sources, and asking lecturers. From analyzing the recommendations from a very few students regarding to
solve the problem of difficulty in searching or do not know exactly how to use search engine effectively, the writer concluded that many of the students still did not know
how to use Google search engine skillfully.
