CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter presents conclusions of this study and suggestions for the English teachers or lecturers, learners, and other researchers.
5.1 Conclusions
This study aimed to identify three research problems which were stated in the first chapter i.e. to identify the perceptions of sixth semester ELESP students in the
academic year of 20092010 of Sanata Dharma University on the use of Internet in improving their academic achievements, to identify the major problems of the
students in using Internet for academic purposes, and to identify the recommendations of the students and lecturers to solve the major problems that
students faced in using Internet for academic purposes. Based on the results of the questionnaires and the interviews, the following
conclusions are drawn. It is proven that the sixth semester ELESP students in the academic year of 20092010 of Sanata Dharma University perceive the use of Internet
in improving academic achievements positively. The students always use Internet for academic purposes more or less two hours in a day. They perceive using Internet
for academic purposes is comfortable, interested, motivated, easy, quick, and
63
inexpensive. The students also perceive that Internet gives contributions in improving their academic achievements such as in accomplishing college assignments, finding
useful on-line articles, journals, papers, and improving English language skills. The major problems of the sixth semester ELESP students in the academic
year of 20092010 are the slow Internet connection in the campus, difficulty in deciding the valid and reliable sources or materials, confusing with too much
information in the results of searching, and difficulty in searching or difficulty in using search engine effectively.
Some recommendations of the students are accessing the Internet not in rush hours, banning some websites such as Facebook, Youtube, etc, which will spend
much bandwidth. The other recommendations are the university or lecturers should recommend the students the valid and reliable sources or materials, checking the
author, reference, link, institution, choosing the .org, .edu domains. However, some recommendations of the students are impractical.
Finally, the recommendations of the lecturers to solve the major problems that students faced in using Internet for academic purposes are by knowing the criteria and
the purpose in searching the sources or materials. The lecturers should provide several valid and reliable links for the students, teach the students how to use Google
search engine skillfully earlier in any class which uses Internet as resources, inform the students do not use Wikipedia as sources, choose the .edu domain will be better,
not all the .com domains or blogs are invalid or unreliable, and not all .pdf domains
64
are valid or reliable. The students should check the information about the institutions or websites because to decide whether the sources are validreliable or not is all
depend on the content, author, accuracy, and currency.
