TEACHER’S FEEDBACK TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT TO THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP N 2 BANYUDONO

IN 2016/2017 ACADEMIC YEAR

ABSTRACT

This study is aimed at describing: 1) the teacher feedback technique used in teaching writing descriptive text, and 2) the problems faced by the teacher in teaching descriptive text using teacher feedback technique. In achieving the objectives, the researcher used descriptive qualitative as an approach to collect and analyze the data. The research was held in SMP N 2 Banyudono. The research took 34 students of the second year students as the subject of the study. The researcher gets the data of the research from event, informant, and document. The techniques for collecting data are observation, interview, and document analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the teacher corrective feedback techniques are appropriate and effective to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono in teaching descriptive text. By using this technique, the students are capable of knowing errors, the reason and corret it. So, it can facilitate the teaching-learning process. The teacher has several problems in teching namely the students difficulties in finding the theme, students difficulties in developing the content, the students difficulties in understanding the components of writing, and the deficiency of teaching media.

Keyword: teacher feedback technique, descriptive text 1. INTRODUCTION

As an international language, English has an important role in human life. However, more and more people need to learn English to make relation between one country and other country for business, culture, tourism, and other interest. English became one of subject materials learned by students at any educational level. The study of English occupies an important role in our educational curriculum. It covers four language skills that should be mastered, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and speaking belongs to productive aspects, while reading and writing skills belong to receptive aspects.

As one of language skills, writing is a useful tool for discovering and thinking (Walvoord, 1985: 1). Writing expresses ideas, feelings, and

phenomenon. It has purpose to communicate between writer and reader about the idea and knowledge of the writer. So, writing expresses the idea and reaction about phenomenon from the writer. From the reason, writing skill is important for the development of English language.

Teachers often give the assessment for the students. One of the weaknesses in giving score is teachers tend to give score to the students in the form of numbers, but they do not give any feedback. So, the students do not know their mistakes in writing. The teacher should give the students feedback while giving them score, in order that the students know their mistake, so they can repair it.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher chooses one topic for her research to know the teacher feedback technique used in teaching writing descriptive text and problem faced by the teacher in teaching descriptive text using teacher feedback technique.

The first study was conducted by Suryaningsih (2008) which aimed to describe the teacher’s feedback technique in teaching pronounciation and to know the students responses. The researcher The results of this study reveal that the teacher’s feedback technique is appropriate and effective for the fourth year students of SD N 09 Ngringo in teaching pronounciation.

The second study was conducted by Rukmini (2011) which aimed to describe the implementation of teaching writing descriptive genre using teacher corrective feedback, the students response to the writing teaching-learning process, and the problem faced by the teacher. The result of this study reveal that teacher corrective feedback technique is appropriate and effective for the second year students of SMP N 1 Tunjungan in teaching writing descriptive genre.

The third study focusing on teacher corrective feedback in teaching writing recount text was carried out by Yuliyanti (2012). Her research was focused to describe the types of corrective feedback in teaching learning of writing recount text, and the problem faced by the teacher in teaching writing recount text. The study showed that teacher corrective feedback technique is

appropriate and effective for the second year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in teaching writing recount text.

The fourth study was Ismayanindar (2015). She investigated the teacher feedback technique used in teaching descriptive text, the student’s response of the teaching writing descriptive text, and the problems faced by the teacher in teaching descriptive text. The study revealed that teacher’s corrective feedback techniques was appropriate and effective for the seconf yar students of SMP N 1 Sragen in teaching descriptive text.

2. RESEARCH METHOD

The researcher limited the study only to analyze the teacher’s feedback technique and technique applied on the descriptive text by the English teacher in teaching writing to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono to develop the students ability in writing descriptive text. The object of the study is the technique of teaching writing descriptive text using teachers feedback applied by the teacher at SMP N 2 Banyudono. The data of this research are the ativities of the teacher and students. The researcher took field note from observation. There are three sources of the data: event, informant, and document. In this research, the researcher uses three method of collecting data, there are observation, interview, and document analysis. The techniques for analyzing the data that are used by the researcher are reducing the data, displaying the data, and drawing conclusion.

3. Research Finding and Discussion 3.1Research Finding

a. The Teacher Feedback Technique used in Teaching Descriptive Text. 1) Fedback on Content (Positive Feedback)

Feedback on content is related to the type of information that is given to the learners which tell them what is not possible used in writing because the structure is wrong. Here is the analysis of feedback on content (positive feedback) based on the observation.

(Observation on November 19th, 2016) The pattern of this feedback is indicating an incorrect answer and criticizing. The teacher gave mark in the worksheet to indicate that the answer is wrong, and gave the correct answer.

2) Feedback on Form (Negative Feedback)

Negative feedback is try to prevent learners from making mistakes by giving clear instructions and explanations together with explicit grammar rules. Here is an example of the feedback technique given by the teacher to the student’s work on the board derived through observation.

(Observation on November 18th, 2016) The pattern of this feedback is commenting on an error and explaining why it is wrong, without asking students to correct the answer. The teacher gave the comment in the wrong answer and explained why it wrong.

b. The Problems Faced by the Teacher in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text Using Teacher Feedback Technique

Based on the interview with the teacher, there are problems faced by the teacher in teaching learning process. It happen in teaching writing descriptive text in this school. The following are some problems faced by the teacher.

1) The Difficulties of The Teacher is The Students Difficulties in Finding The Theme

The first step of make a paragraph was the students should choose the theme. But sometimes, the students confused to choose the theme perfectly. In other side, the teacher got difficulties to explain the students in finding the problem faced by students on it. It was make them spended a lot of time. So, to solve this problem, the teacher asked the students to increase the ability of reading and make broad their knowledge. Mrs. S, the English teacher in 8H said that:

There are some students that have problems in finding the theme .

2) Students Difficulties in Developing The Content

In teaching writing descriptive text, the teacher gets difficulties to explain the students how to develop the content. The problem is there are some new vocabularies that the student don’t know about it. To solve this problem, the teacher asked the students to

find the difficult meaning of a text using dictionary, then the teacher explains the content of the text by mixing between Indonesia and English Language to make them understand. Mrs. S, the English teacher in 8H said that:

The students find the problem in developing the content.

3) The Students Difficulties in Understanding The Components of Writing

In order to make a good paragraph in writing descriptive text, the students should understand the component of writing descriptive text. The component of writing descriptive text are the content, the use of vocabulary, grammatical use, and mechanics consideration such as the spelling. In descriptive text, the grammatical use is simple present tense, and in making descriptive text, the problem is the students do not care about the tenses. To solve this problem, the teacher asking to th students to do exercises about simple presentense in making desriptive text. Mrs. S, the English teacher in 8H said that:

4) The Deficiency of Teaching Media

In teaching writing descriptive text will be easier to understand if the teacher using the media such as books, pictures, LCD, cards, dictionaries, etc. Based on observation that done by the researcher, the teaching media is limited. If th teacher wants to use the LCD, the teacher should be alterned with other teachers. Some students do not bring a dictionaries, so they have to borrow from the library, while the dictionaries that available in the library is very limited. Mrs. S, the English teacher in 8H said that:

3.2Discussion

Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the teacher feedback technique used in teaching descriptive text are feedback on content (positive feedback) and feedback on form (negative feedback). The positive feedback used by the teacher are acknowledging a correct answer, indicating an incorrect answer, and expanding or modifying students’ answer. The negative feedback used is commenting on an error and explaining why it is wrong, without asking students to correct the answer. Corrective feedback does not help the students to make a good paragraph, but it help students to find out their mistake. The teacher applied positive feedback in the classroom because by using positive feedback the teacher can be a facilitator for the students and make them more active in the class. The problem faced by the teacher in teaching writing descriptive text are the difficulties of the teacher is the students difficulties in finding the theme, students difficulties in developing the content, the students difficulties in understanding the components of writing, and the deficiency of teaching media.

4. Conclusion and Suggestion 4.1Conclusion

After describing and analyzing the data, the researcher draws conclusion based on the research findings of the teacher’s feedback technique in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono as follows:

a. The teacher feedback techniques used in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono are feedback on content (positive feedback) and feedback on form (negative feedback). Feedback on content (positive feedback) which is used by the teacher are acknowledging a correct answer, indicating an incorrect answer, and

expanding or modifying students’ answer. For feedback on form (negative feedback), the teacher used commenting on an error and explaining why it is wrong, without asking students to correct the answer. In conclusion, the teacher used feedback on content (positive feedback) in teaching writing descriptive text.

b. The problem faced by the teacher in writing descriptive text are the students difficulties in finding the theme, students difficulties in developing the content, the students difficulties in understanding the components of writing, the deficiency of teaching media.

4.2Pedagogical Implication

After the researcher draws the conclusion, the researcher draws pedagogical implication of the teacher’s feedback technique in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono as follows:

a. The teacher feedback techniques used in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono are positive feedback and negative feedback. Corrective feedback does not help the students to make a good paragraph, but it needful to help students to find out their mistakes. The function of feedback is used to help students find the suitable diction for their own paragraph. Feedback is used so that students can make a good descriptive text and easy to understand.

b. In order to solve the problem by the teacher, the teacher can used existing objects around the class, ask the students to come forward to write a description of the object. Explain to students about the structure of the text they write, which includes identification, which includes a description. Then the teacher gives feedback from text written by students about word choice, conjunction, grammar, then teachers and students jointly arrange a descriptive text intact along with its parts. Later, the students were given assignments or homework regarding the descriptive text.

4.3Suggestion

After the researcher draws the conclusion of the teacher’s feedback technique in teaching descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono, she proposes the suggestions for the teacher, students, and school.

a. For the Teacher

1) The teacher should give more motivation for the students in order to make the students increase their vocabulary.

2) The teacher should remind the students to always bring the dictionary in every English lesson.

3) The teacher should know the character of the students. b. For the Students

1) The students should prepare the material first such as books, worksheet, and homework before learning.

2) The students should learn the material at home before and after learning at the school.

3) The students should improve their vocabulary to make them easy in writing.

4) The students should be more active in class. c. For the School

1) The school library should increase the number of English dictionary. 2) The school library should provide the number of English books to

increase students knowledge.

4.2Pedagogical Implication

After the researcher draws the conclusion, the researcher draws pedagogical implication of the teacher’s feedback technique in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono as follows:

a. The teacher feedback techniques used in teaching writing descriptive text to the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Banyudono are positive feedback and negative feedback. Corrective feedback does not help the students to make a good paragraph, but it needful to help students to find out their mistakes.
