c. Discussion
Having analyzed the results from questionnaire and interviews, the researcher revealed that there were five factors influencing the participants’
perception in writing report texts. The first factor was stereotyping. Gibson et al. 1985 argue that stereotype is someone’s view of particular member in a group
but generalizes all members in that group. Stereotyping related to the participants’ point of view without knowing all parts of the thing. In this research, the
participants stereotyped the quality of feedback given by their teacher and peers. They stereotyped that teacher feedback was more accurate and correct rather than
peer feedback. Stereotyping affected the participants’ perception as there were 60 of the
participants who argued that they preferred to get feedback on their report texts from their teacher rather than peers. Further, there were 22.85 of the participants
argued that they didn’t believe that their peers’ comments on their report texts were correct. Moreover, there were also 20 of the participants who argued that
they wouldn’t revise their report texts based on their peers’ comments. Based on the data gathered from the interviews, the participants argued that they had the
same knowledge in report texts as their peers. They also thought that even their peers weren’t sure in giving comments. Therefore, stereotyping is one of the
factors influencing students’ perception on the implemention of peer feedback in writing report texts.
The second factor was self-concept. Gibson et al. 1985 define self-concept as the way how an individual sees and feels about themselves. Seeing and feeling
51 about ourselves affect our perception. In this research, self-concept affected the
participants’ perception. The participants felt that they were unable to give feedback to their peers’ report texts. They stated that they were afraid of giving
wrong feedback to their peers as they were lacking in grammar, vocabulary, and understanding some sentences in their peers’ report texts. Therefore, there were
42.95 of the participants who argued that they were not willing enough to check and give comments to their peers’ report texts.
The third factor was situation. Gibson et al. 1985 state that situation affects our feelings and habits in our daily life. In their writing class, the teacher
had the authority to ask the students to implement peer feedback. As the students could not refuse their teacher’s order, they provided and practised peer feedback
in their writing class. This situation affected the students’ perception on the implementation of peer feedback in writing report texts. There were only 57.14
of the participants who stated that they were willing to check and give comments to their peers’ report texts. Majority of the students also preferred to receive
feedback from their teacher rather than their peers. The other factor was need. Gibson et al. 1985 state that someone’s need
for something influences their perception. The participants argued that having their report texts checked by their peers was important. They needed to get
feedback on their report texts before submitting it. This need affected their perception. There were 81.42 of the participants who agreed that having their
report texts checked by their peers was important. There were also 78.57 of the
52 participants who argued that they didn’t mind if their peers criticized their report
texts. The last factor was emotion. Gibson et al. 1985 state that someone’s
emotion also affects the way he or she thinks about certain context. On the close- ended questions in the questionnaire, there were three questions asked related to
the participants’ feelings. The researcher discovered that there were 57.14 of the participants who were willing to check and give comments to their peers’ report
texts. Then, there were 78.57 of the participants who did not mind if their peers criticized their report texts. Last, there were also 80 of the participants who
would revise their report texts based on their peers’ comments. Therefore, the researcher concluded that there were five factors influencing the students’
perception on the implementation of peer feedback in this research namely stereotyping, self-concept, situation, need, and emotion.
B. Students’ Perception on the Benefits of the Implementation of Peer
Feedback in Writing Report Texts
This section answers the second research question in this research. To discover the benefits of the implementation of peer feedback in writing report
texts, the researcher employed the questionnaire. The researcher also conducted the interviews to support the data acquired from the questionnaire. On these
statements, the researcher considered that the participants’ perception was derived from their opinions.
