B. Literature Review

In analyzing this novel, the writer found another research using Carmen bin Laden’s Inside the Kingdom: My life in Saudi Arabia. First is the research in feminist approach has been done by graduated student of UMS, Arina Henry 2008 discussed about ―Gender Inequality in Carmen bin Laden’s Inside the Kingdom: A Feminist Approach ‖. She found that Carmen’s faced two cultures, west culture and the East culture. West is by America and East by Saudi Arabia. Carmen showed in Saudi Arabia that woman as an object that must against patriarchal culture to get equalities in position, role, right, and participation that is reflected in her character. And then in this novel the major character is also as the narrator because this novel is autobiography types of novel. The second, as the writer browse in internet, the writer found the research from Carol Memmott 2008 discussed about A woman Inside the Kingdom of Islam. She found that Carmen bin Laden gives a great portrayal of contemporary life in Middle Eastern countries, the plight of women who are forced to live under the strict rules and regulations of the fundamentalist Islamic religion. And also a ―wake-up call‖ to free nations to realize the potential terrorist threat which needs to be recognized in order to ensure our safety as freedom loving individuals. Beside that Carmen gives motivation to stand up as a woman and share her personal experiences and feelings, although quite subjectively, about the Bin Laden familys daily life in Saudi Arabia is surely a bold and possibly consequential act. Her intentions are based on her love for and commitment to her three daughters happiness is heroic. From the literary above, the present researcher assumes that there is no researcher who analyzes about ―Effort to Escape from the Tradition in Saudi Arabia in Carmen bin Laden’s Inside the Kingdom: My Life in Saudi Arabia 2004 ‖. The writer will analyze the novel by using an Individual Psychological approach to find out the effort of Carmen bin Laden to escape from the tradition in Saudi Arabia.
