CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents background of the study, statement of the problems, purposes of the study, scope and limitation, significance of the study, and also definition of the key terms.

1.1Backgrounds of the Study

Literature is human’s expression. People usually have many ways of expressing their feeling, experience, thought, imagination and idea. When people read literature, people acquire a pleasure and it will not make people satisfied because they are curios to the story which is entertaining.

Kusnosoebroto states that literature is rooted in one of the most basic human desires, and men have taken pleasure in the imaginary adventures and experiences of imaginary people (1988: 1). It means that literature is connected with life because it describes the events and the things that can happen in a society, what human being has experienced in his life or it describes the reality. In discussing literature, it should be pointed out that literature could not be separated from its social environment, in which a close relationship between literature and society appears as the appreciation of the literary problem. Therefore, by reading literature, people will get new vision and new experience indirectly from the author’s solution.

Literature such as drama, short story, or novel is good to increase and enrich the reader’s insight. The advantages of reading literary works are it will

expand people’s imagination and it does not only give us and enjoyment but also give understanding of life, because literature talks about human life. According to Francis Connolly in Koesnosoebroto, the reason for reading literature is because of hunger of information, or amusement, or solace, because of an appetite for truth that seem to grow by what it feeds on (1988: 1).

Midega (2011) explains that literature shares with film because it has the ability to employ the structures and devices of narrative. Sequence of images on screen told a story and this is equivalent to the sequence of words on page. The use of language in film established firmly the connections to literature. Films, just like in literature, present i) action ii) images iii) words replicating life. Literary works also have a stylistic and thematic basis in a realistic presentation of characters and incidents.

Talking about film related to literature, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, film whose means of photographic depiction far surpass the means of realistic portrayal in the theatre is as semi textual genre exerting influence on literature and literary criticism (Klarer, 2006: 53). It means film has brought influence on literature and literary criticism because it can be said that film is a new form of drama which is presented with aspects such as: camera angle, editing, montage, and so on. Thus, since film is categorized into literature, it is also reflecting human real life which can be taken lesson from it such as: sacrifice. Sacrifice is part of phenomena in human life.

The film is chosen as the subject of the thesis for some reasons. First, film gives people real entertainment whether from the act that includes a lot of talented artists or from the background of the story that is supported by sound and visual

effects that make the story look amazing. Second, mysteries and dramatic conflicts that stated in it usually lead people to think what should happen in the last. Third, film gives us interesting setting, such as, life style, crime, state, beach, building, and also mountain. The last, every creative film writer will give people a different story that is always excited to see.

In this study, If Only film created by Gil Junger 2004 became the object of the study. This film tells about one’s sacrifice on his beloved girlfriend. Ian, a super busy businessman, has relationship with Samantha, a musician. Ian sacrifices to protect his girlfriend by leaving his business and tries hard to appreciate her very much. If Only film contain good lessons for the reader, especially about the sacrifice to save someone’s life.

Considering the above background, the writer is interested in conducting a research on Analysis of Ian Wyndham’s Sacrifice to his Girlfriend on Gil Junger’s Film “If Only” because this film teaches moral lesson, namely sacrifice. Sacrifice is one of good deed which needs to belong to people as human beings. Besides, sacrifice sometimes need to do to get what men want.

1.2Statement of the Problems

In order to make the course of the study clear, the writer needs to state the problems. Based on the research background stated above, the writer formulates the problems as follows:

1. What are the reasons of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend’s life? 2. How are the efforts of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend’s life? 3. What are the results of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend’s life?

1.3Purposes of the Study

Based on statement of the problems above, this study has the objectives as follows:

1. To explain the reasons of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend. 2. To describe the efforts of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend. 3. To dig out the results of Ian Wyndham’s sacrifice to his girlfriend.

1.4Scope and Limitation

This study is focused on the film If Only. There are many topics that can be an analyzed in this film, but in this study, the writer only focuses on “sacrifice” which is done by main character. Meanwhile, for the limitation of study, the writer tries to analyze one of the main character’s sacrifices in saving Samantha Andrews’s life.

1.5Significance of the Study

Every kinds of study has own significance. From this study, the writer hopes that this study will bring some significance for English Department students. For teacher, it is expected to motivate them to study about literary works, especially film. It also expected to make them realize that learning literature can help human solve their problem in their daily life.

For English Department students who are interested in analyzing the literary works, especially in film, the result of this study can be used as a reference in doing the similar research.

1.6Definition of the Key Terms

1. Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it (Wikipedia, 2012).

2. Film is means of photographic depiction far surpass the means of portrayal in the theater, which deals with material aspects such as camera angle, editing, slow or fast motion, and sound, etc. (Klarer, 2006).

3. Ian Wyndham is the main character in If Only film.

4. Sacrifice is an act of giving something of value for the sake of something that is of greater value or importance (Oxford dictionary eleventh edition).
