Tree bearing branches, 7 m high, with bark grey. Branched foliaceous light brown mixed with yellow. Petioles very short. Leaves 6 – 8.5 by 2.5 – 4.5
cm, elliptic or obovate – elliptic, apex short acuminate, subchartaceous, upper surface glabrous, lower surface sub light brown, dense pubescent, with
unequal side, nerves a little slightly raised, secondary nerves 6 – 8 pairs. Flower solitary, peduncle 5 – 7 mm long. Sepals broadly triangular, 1.5 mm
length, 2.5 mm wide, on the outside dense pubescent. Petals especially on the outside minutely tomentose, outer petals, subovate, ca. 2 mm length, 2 – 2.5
mm wide; inner petals, thick, on the outside conspicuously major, 3 – 3.5 mm length, 2 – 2.5 mm wide; Stamens 15 – 18, 1 mm long; carpels 6, dense
sericeous, stigma subobovoid possesed of, 2 mm long.
DISTRIBUTION : New Guinea. Papua New Guinea PNG : Bisiatabu ECOLOGY : on the edges of forest, alt. 460 m. asl.
NOTES : This species which is characterized by the cinnamon-colored,
densely pubescent under-side of the leaves differ from P. schefferiana Diels. Diels with which it agrees in the shape of the petals, in the tomentulous
branchlets, considerably broader leaves and fewer carpels. SPECIMENS EXAMINED : New Guinea. Papua New Guinea PNG, Bisiatabu
on the edges of forest, alt. 460 m., Brass 586 NY.

13. Popowia platyphylla Diels
Popowia platyphylla Diels in Engl. Jahrb. 3 1915 182. - Type : Papua New Guinea, Kaiserin, Sepik, Aug1913, Ledermann 11373. not seen in BO and
L. Small tree, branch bark dark brown. Young twigs dense hairs - pilose.
Petioles small, 1 – 3 mm long. Leaves 12 – 18 by 5 – 7.5 cm, broadly elliptic or elliptic, chartaceous, apex acuminate, base narrowed and unequal-side, narrow
minutely spot on the upper side, the lower hairs – pilose on the midrib and veins with distinct long ascending hair, primary nerves on both side ca. 7 pairs, from
midrib angle beneath prominent. Flowers soliter, peduncle short, very stright
dark pilose, 2 – 3 mm long. Sepals triangular, dark – hispid – pilose, 4 mm
length, 3.5 mm wide. Petals whitish, outer petals on the in side short, pilose , 4
mm length, 2.5 mm wide; inner petals thick, pilose, base hollowed out in a curve, apex long curved in wards, 5 – 6 mm length, 4 mm wide. Stamens 12, vertical,
flat; carpel 6, ovary hairy, long springkled; stigma glabrous or minute pappilose, ovoid – ellipsoid.
DISTRIBUTION : NEW GUINEA. PAPUA NEW GUINEA PNG : Sepik District.
