3.2 The Journey of Love
Here, the writer will describe both the kind of love which are found in the aspects of the novel as theme, plot, setting and main characters.
One of the most important differences between a good novel and a great one is that, although both entertain us, the great novel goes further and makes us
think deeply about serious aspects of life and health. It isnotonly designedto entertain us, buttomakeusfeelunderstoodthe importance ofthe love from someone
who does not only make us happy but want to share in the joyful and sorrowful. It will be possible for the readers to read the viewpoint of fault in our stars without
realizing that, in addition to demanding the story, interesting characters that are the main characters think about some important events that are always faced with
cancer victims to always be grateful for what they have done for each day. The theme of this novel is Romance experienced by two teenagers who
are bothsuffering fromcancer victims. Two teenagers who have been cancer victims and falling in love with each other since the first meeting in the supporting
group. “I’m Hazel, I’d say when they’d get to me. Sixteen. Thyroid
originally but with impressive and long-settled satellite colony in my lugs. And I’m doing okay.” Green,2012:5

people do not always care enough to the others , like a teenager who had adapted cancer named Hazel Grace. The appeared character was named Hazel Grace
Lancaster. This name was the description that Hazel means “seed” for plant. It indicated a starting point for plant to grow. At her thirteen years old, she had been
predicted to be died younger than her age. A conflict had been a stressful moment when someone faced options of the unwanted desires. As the way Hazel had faced
for the cancer disease or to sustain a spirit of living by did not to be hopeless. Such a difficult and challenging situation, Hazel tried to stand alive that a hope
was always available for any individu to live. It is a God’s concern of taking one’s life or giving him or her back to breathe.
“A boy was staring at me.” “I was quite sure I’d seen him before. Long and leany muscular, he
drawrfed the molded plastic elementary school chair he was sitting in. Mahogany hair, straight and short. He looked my age, maybe a
year older, and he sat with his tailbone againts the edge of the chair, his posture aggressively poor, one hand half in a pocket of
dark jeans.” Green,2012:9 Hazelmetwith aboynamed AugustusWaters who were suffered from
osteosarcoma and resulted in one leg had to be amputated. After a few weeks, Hazel attended a meeting where she’s surprised by the presence of a new good
boy who had stared directly at her. Augustus Waters, his body was tall and muscular with mahogany hair, but he had lost one of his leg. He survivored of
‘osteosarcoma.’ “I guess?”
“What’s your favourite?” “Um,” I said.”
“my favourite book, by a wide margin, was An Imperial Affliction, but didn’t like to tell people about it. Sometimes, you read a book

conviced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans never be put back together unless
and until all living humans read the book. And then are books like An Imperial Affliction,
which you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like
a betrayal.” Green,2012:33 After supporting classes ended, Augustus made approaches to lend
Hazela novel titled The Price of Dawn Dawn reward, and Hazel recommended a novel titled AnImperial Affliction Misfortune Extraordinary. After their starring
contest had been overed, Augustus tried to talk with Hazel and the stuck on a long conversation at the group and Hazel started to like him. Hazel and Augutus agreed
to read one of the other favorite books. Augustus lend Hazel a copy of The Price of Dawn
, a book was based on his favorite video game. Hazel described her the strong feelings for An Imperial Affection.Hazel made a list of questions to be sent
tothe assistant of Van Houten, Lidewij. “He has an assistant,” Augustus said. “Lidewij Vligenthart. I found
her. I emailed her. She gave him the email. He respounded her email account.”Green,2012:67
Aweek later, Augustus managed to send email, browsed email to Van Houten for Hazel.
“I wonder, though, if you would mind answering a couple question I have about what happens after the end of the novel. I undestand
the book ends because Anna dies or becomes too ill to continue writing it, but I would really like to know what happens to Anna’s
mom-whether she merried the Dutch Tulip Man, Whether she ever has another child, and whether she stays at 917 W. Temple, atc.
Also, is the Dutch Tulip Man a fraud or does he really love them? What happens to Anna’s friend-particularly Claire and Jake? Do
they stay together? And lastly-I realize that this is the kind of deep and thoughtful question you always hoped your readers would ask-
what becomes of Sisyphus the Hamster? These questions have haunted me for years-and I don’t know how long I have left to get
answers to them.” Green,2012: 70

Hazel summarized the plot of An Imperial Affliction. The narrator was a girl named Anna who developed blood cancer. Anna lived with her mother, a one-
eyed tulip obsessed gardener, who had falled in love with a dubious, allegedly rich figure called The Dutch Tulip Man. As a reader, Hazel asked the man’s
wealth and even his real nationality. Hazel admired Anna’s candid nature in the face of cancer.
“I know these are not important literary questions and that you book is full of important literary questions, but I would just really
like to know. And of course, if you ever do decide to write anything else, even if you don’t want to publish it, I’d love to read
it. Frankly, I’d read your grocery lists.” Green,2012: 71 She found it comforting that Anna comforted also, viewed herself as a
side effect of the endless biological mutation that provided the planet with its abundant diversity of life. The only issue with the book was its lack of a
conclusion. It ended midsentence without any character’s resolution. To make matters worse, Van Houten vanished mysteriously into obscurity after publishing
the novel. So, Hazel told Augustus that he wanted to meet her favorite author because there are some questions she wanted to ask the author, VanHouten.
They were swooning over the same books and having phone calls into the hours of the night. At the arriving, Hazel started seeing the possibility of a
lifewas more exciting than her cancer-ridden one and Augustus stared corresponding with Hazel’s favorite writer, it is something she had never been
able to do, they get an invitation to go to Amsterdam and learn more about the ending of Hazel’s favorite book.

“I fear your faith has been misplaced-but then, faith ususally is. I can not answer your question, at least not in writing, because to
write out such answers would constitute a sequel to An Imperial Affliction
, which you might publish or otherwise share on the network that has replaced the brains of your generation.
Green,2012:77 Finally, VanHouten answered, but he said he could not answer the
question from Hazel personally in the email. “Should you find yourself in Amsterdam, however, please do pay a
visit at your leisure. I am usually home. I would even allow you a peek at my grocery lists. Green,2012:78
And if Hazel went to Amsterdam, he invited her to stop by at the house
of Van Houten. But she could not because her mother did not have enough money to go to Amsterdam. Hazel told about the contents of the email replied on
Augustus. And Augustus fulfilled his desire through an organization called the Peri Foundation. Its businesswas to realize the wishes of sufferer. August managed
totrace the where abouts of VanHouten, the author from a book recommended byHazel, An Imperial AfflictionMisfortune Extraordinary.
“I woke up in the ICU. I could tell I was the ICU because I didn’t have my own room, and because there was so much beeping, and
because I was alone. Dad told me that I did not have a brain tumor, but that my headache was caused by poor oxygenation, which was
caused by my lungs swimming in fluid, a liter and a half of which had been successfully drained from my chest, which was
why I might feel a slight discomfort in my side.” Green,2012:106- 107
Onthe way of their journey, there was something happened to Augustus
and Hazel whereas suddenly got a serious case in his the lungs, had been filled with fluid and she was forced tobe takento the ICU.After Hazel had been recover
from the illness, they continue their journey to Amsterdam. “I want to watch something you haven’t seen.”

“In the end we watched 300, a war movie about 300 Spartans who protect Sparta from an invading army of like a billion Persians.”
Green,2012:149
On the plane, there were a lot of things done together between Hazel and Augustus. Beginto from watching a movie that they had never seen.
“I’m in love with you,he said quitely.” “Augustus, I said.”
“I am,he said. He was straring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m love with you, and I’m not in the business
of denying my self the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void,
and thatoblivion is invitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust,
and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.” Green,2012:153
Until Augustus was telling his feeling to Hazel. Hazel got an experience, it
was very interesting and unforgettable. “Augustus,” I said again, not knowing what else to say. It felt like
everthing was rising up in me, like I was drowning in this weirdly painful joy, but I couldn’t say it back. I couldn’t say anything back.
I just looked at him and let him look at me until he nodded, lips pursed, and turned away, placing the side of his head againts the
window.” Green,2012:154 And Hazel also expressed her feelings to Augustus because she also liked
him. But she only could expressed the feelings in her heart. “The land seemed sunk into the ocean, little rectangles of green
surrounded on all sides by canals.” Green,2012:155 The plot of The fault in Our Stars is introducing the place. It was
Indianapolis. Indianapolis was a small town in Unites States of America. Finally, they were scheduled to meet with Van Houten in Amsterdam.
Van Houten’s assistant name Lidewij was present during the meeting and admitted to having arranged anything. She thought it would be good for Van

Houten. He ridiculed Hazel’s belief that an author had special insight into his town characters. The scene came a halt when Van Houten accused Hazel of being
dependet of people’s pity and a side effect of evolution. “And we were kissing. My hand let go of the oxygen cart and I
reached up for his neck, he pulled up me by my waist onto my tiptoes. As his parted lips me mine, I started to feel breathless in a
new and fascinating way.” Green,2012:203 After the tour, Hazel and Augustus returned to Agustus’s hotel room.
Hazel told him that she had loved him, and they made love for the first time. “After a while, I pulled him over to the bed and we lay there
together as he told me they’d strated palliative chemo.” Green,2012:215
It was not as Hazel expectedexactly, neither as painfl or as ecstatic, and
they fall asleep together afterward, with Hazel’s head resting on Augutus’s chest. The next morning, they came back at the hotel, Hazel could tell
somethingthat there was something wrong and Augustus confessed that he was sick. He started to feel illness in his hip. Augustus broke the news to Hazel that he
recently had a PET scan and his cancer had returned aggressively. The news that Augustus’s cancer had returned and Hazel’s roles in their
relationship. Augustus handled talking to the others about his cancer’s return in a few different ways. Initially he hide it from Hazel. He didn’t fully explain why,
but he hinted that it was because he didn’t want her to look at him differently. After he told her, however, the love he felt over how to act in front of her
becomes clear. Hazel described him breaking down and soobing just after he had told her, but almost immediately he composed himself and told Hazel he would
fight the cancer.

Augustus arrived at home from the hospital a few days after the episode at the gas station. Hazel had got a call from Augustus, he asked her to prepare a
eulogy for his pre-funeral. All she wanted to do had been there for him, and watching him dietook up her whole life. When Augustus died, it was
unimaginably hard. “Augustus Waters died eight days after his prefuneral, at Memorial,
in the ICU, when the cancer, which was made of him, finally stopped his heart, which was also made of him.” Green,2012:261

In order to know and understand more detail about love also find through the main characters used by John Green in the novel The Fault in Our Stars.
1. Hazel Grace Lancaster
Hazel Grace Lancaster was one of Johns’ most sympathetically drawn characters. Hazel was 16-year-old protagonist, an astute and remarkably
conscientious girl, Hazel had been diagnosed at age thirteen with a terminal form of thyroid cancer at has spreaded to her lungs. She keeps a distance to most of
people for knowing her death would ultimately hurt them. She is—conscientious speaking—old for her age, as we see when shes contrasted with her friend
Kaitlyn. By comparison, Hazel is far more thoughtful and considerate about her actions than Kaitlyn, and she is far more analytical. One of Hazel’s defining
characteristics is her wish to tread lightly upon the world. She desperately wants to mitigate the harm caused by her existence on Earth.
Hazel’s transcendent journey throughout the novel is truly multifaceted. Physically speaking, we witness Hazel grow weaker. This change is apparent in
the fact that she uses the stairs at Support Group at the beginning of the novel and opts for the elevator near the novels end, as her physical condition deteriorates.
The more nuanced aspect of Hazel’s journey revolves around her spiritual and philosophical understanding of death. At the beginning of the novel, Hazel
obsesses over the impact her death will have on those around her. She fears getting close to anyone because she knows that her death, which isnt far off, will
hurt anyone close to her. It makes her, as she puts it, a “grenade.” This fear appears most in regard to her mother. Once, when Hazel was near dying, she
Universitas Sumatera Utara

overheard her mother saying if Hazel dies she wont be a mother anymore, and that thought has stayed with Hazel. This fear motivates Hazels mission to
determine what happens to the characters at the end of An Imperial Affliction. She needs to affirm that everything turns out alright for Anna’s mother, so that she can
convince herself that her parents will end up alright. Through her relationship with Augustus, however, Hazels perspective
changes. When his cancer reappears, she recognizes that, of the two of them, he is now the grenade. But even so, she isnt sorry she fell in love with him, even
though it will hurt her immensely when he dies. Instead, she cherishes and feels extremely grateful for the time they do have together. The final words of the novel
indicate the extent to which Hazel grows spiritually throughout her journey. The implication of the words “I do” are of a marriage that takes place through
memory. Though the marriage is symbolic, it is nevertheless real. What Hazel means by saying “I do” is that she will remember and love Augustus for as long as
she lives, and in that sense she has learned that death is not the ubiquitous finality she had once considered it to be. Our relationships continue, even if we do not.
2. Augustus Waters
The sixteen-year-old with osteosarcoma who becomes Hazels boyfriend. Augustus has a keen wit and a tendency toward performance—he revels in grand
romantic gestures. Augustus almost immediately falls in love with Hazel after meeting her at Support Group. Augustus plays a strong, confident, funny, and
charming boy. He continuously fetishizes his own grandiosity. He is convinced

that the importance of life is being heroic, leaving a noble legacy, monumentally impacting humanity. He is deluded by showy metaphors of his own construction,
like when he sacrifices himself in a video game by jumping on a grenade in order to save children. Gus, a teenage boy in Indianapolis who used to be a star athlete
and now finds himself dying from cancer. Gus is a sweet, caring, and understandably terrified seventeen-year-old guy.As he deteriorates physically, hes
forced to confront the fact that hell die without doing anything humanity at large views as extraordinary, and a deeper spiritual transition takes place.
3. Isaac
Isaac was a The mutual friend of Hazels and Augustuss who facilitates their introduction at Support Group. Isaac is cynical by nature. Blinded by cancer
and kicked to the curb by his girlfriend Monica, Isaac often embodies skepticism and rage. It is worth noting that he shares his name with Biblical Isaac, who also
was blind. 4.
Kaitlyn Kaitlynis a Hazel’s friend and former schoolmate. She is pretty, popular,
and exemplifies what Hazel might have been like if she hadnt been diagnosed with cancer and left school. Though they are still friends, there is a palpable
distance between the two girls, who occupy such divergent worlds. 5.
Monica Monica was a Isaac’s girlfriend and then ex-girlfriend. Monica breaks up
with Isaac prior to his surgery to remove his remaining eye. 6.
Peter Van Houten

Peter Van Houten , The infamous author of An Imperial Affliction. Hazel and Augustus learn he is a verbose and brash drunkard who pretentiously deflects
emotion with walls of intellectualism and cruelty. 7.
Lidewij Vliegenthart Lidewij Vliegenthart , Peter Van Houten’s assistant. Initially responsible
for relaying Hazel and Augustus’s communications to the author, Lidewij comes to act as a voice of reason for Van Houten.
8. Mrs. Lancaster
Mrs. Lancaster , Hazel’s mother. She was an emotionally strong and kind woman who has made it her life to care for Hazel. During the novel Hazel
obsesses over the emotional devastation that her death will cause to her mother. In the end Hazel is overjoyed to learn that her mother has secretly been taking
classes to become a social worker. 9.
Mr. Lancaster Mr. Lancaster, Hazel’s father. He is caring and prone to tears. In contrast
with Hazels mother, he only understands Hazels cancer broadly and spends much of his time at work.
10. Patrick
Patrick, The leader and sole adult at Support Group. He had noted for his warmth and unequivocal optimism. As a consequence of cancer Patrick lost both
of his testicles, which provides some of the more cynical group members with a bit of comic relief.
11. Augustus’s parents

Augustus’s parents , The few glimpses that we get of Augustus’s parents in the novel are of kind and understanding people. They do not hesitate to

involved in his son’s life. 12.

giving out hugs. She convinces Hazel’s parents that Hazel should be allowed to travel to Amsterdam, despite their reservations.
