Based on the background of the research above, the problems of the research were formulated as follows:

1.3 Objectives of the Research
Based on the problems, the objectives of the research were: 1.3.1
To
improve the grade VIII students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMP NURIS Jember
in the 20102011 Academic Year. 1.3.2
To
improve the grade VIII students’ active participation in the teaching and learning process of the reading comprehension at SMP NURIS Jember
in the 20102011 Academic Year.
1.4 Operational Definition of the Terms
It was necessary to define the terms used in this title operationally to avoid misunderstanding between the writer and the readers. The terms used in this research
are defined operationally as follows:
1.4.1 Folktale
Folktale is a folk story assumed to be never existed by the teller. Folktale also deals with generic term for the various kinds of narrative prose literature found in oral
traditions of the world. The way of telling the stories appears to be cultural universal. In this study, the folktale used was about local folktale of Indonesia in the written
form.
1.5.1 The English Teacher and the Institution
The results of this research were expected to be useful for the English teacher of SMP NURIS Jember as input and consideration in teaching reading by
using folktale in order to facilitate the students to comprehend English texts easily.
1.5.2 The Students
Hopefully, the results of this research were useful for the students to improve their reading comprehension achievement covering word, sentence, paragraph
and text comprehension by using folktale and improve their active participation in learning English especially in reading.
1.5.3 The Future Researchers
Hopefully, the results of this research could be used as a reference for conducting further research, particularly, on varying reading materials in order
to develop the students’ reading comprehension by using folktale.
1.6 Limitation of the Research
