INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Literature is the result of a creative work of the human mind and use of language as media. And literature can be found in books, videos, television, radio, CDs, computer, newspaper and all the media of communication where a story is told or an image is created.

Roberts and Jacobs (1993:1) say, “Literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate ideas.” Before the invention of writing, literary works were necessarily spoken or sung, and were retained only as literature still exists, with many poems and stories designed exclusively for spoken delivery. Even in our modern era of writing and printing, much literature is still heard aloud rather than read silently.

In literature, it explains about story. Story is also the part of literature. Story also explains about many things. One of them is about dream.

Dream is anaspiration. Dream is something to be achieved, gained or earned. Dream instead of a delusion or an illusions. Dream is not something that is impossible to be achieved in the future if we have plans or efforts to make it possible. The writer has ever read news from internet, the news is about the dream of a boy finally achieved. When the boy was in Elementary School, his teacher had ever asked them about what their biggest dream was. The boy answered that his biggest dream was that he would like to be a super

(14)

2

magician who would be famous. All of his friends in his class laughed at him included his teacher, because they had thought that his answer was such a joke and it was impossible to achieve his dream. After getting tired of practice and learned about magic, finally the boy can be famous now as a super magician not only in his country but also in International. He could prove to his friends who had ever insulted him in Elementary School , He could chase his dream and made it possible. He had made his dream comes true.

Dream is also found in The Alchemist novel where a shepherd named Santiago had a dream to get the treasure in a Pyramid, He had ever dreamed it twice. He had left his hometown and travelled to many places. He had got many obstacles in every place that he had visited to get to the Pyramid. Fortunately, the boy could solve it all and he met some people who help him to find the treasure. Finally, after passing a long journey and many obstacles , he could arrive at Pyramid and achieved his dream to find the treasure. His treasures were Spanish gold coins, precious stones, gold masks adorned with red and white feathers, and stone statues embended with jewels. The spoils of a conquest that the country had been forgotten long ago, and that some conquistador had failed to tell his children about.

The Writer chooses “Dream” because Santiago’s dream was unique and mysterious. He was whispered by a child in his dream and told him that he would find the treasure in Pyramid and he wanted to chase his treasure in Pyramid which he had ever dreamed twice. Santiago traveled to many places

(15)

3

and met with some wise and motivating people during his way to Pyramid. He wanted to find the treasure because he wanted to change his life.

1.1Problem of Study

Problems of Study can be defined as follows: 1) What is Santiago’s Dream ?

2) What did Santiago do for the dream? 1.2Scope of Study

Scope of Study in this paper is limited to analyse the elements of the novel such as

plot, character, setting, which show how Santiago chased his dream to find the treasure.

1.3Method of Study

The writer reads the novel to understand the story and the writer reads reference books and browses data from the internet. 2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Novel

Novel is a long prose narrative that describes fictional characters and events in the form of a sequential story. Novel is kind of the literature, according to Rees (1973:106) says that novel is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length in which characters and actions that are representated in real life are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexity. One of inspiration in writing a novel is based on true story with human experience, usually through from relation of sequence events involving a group of person in a specific setting. On the other side that novel teaches the readers by the moral message in a theme of the novel.

Peck and Coyle (1984:102) say that the novel reflects a movement away from an essentially of religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Most novel are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves.

George Watson (1979:3) says “Novel is the name of a literary kind, and there is a story to tell about how, over the centuries, its substance has widened and its conventions changed.” So it means novel is literary work, narrate about the life in centuries ago. Of course, novel is a way to send the message in Society, such as in novel the characters that play role hero and felon are found. Hero in novel will be success but felon will be loser. From this message the readers can get inspiration that hero is good but felon is bad.

(18)

6

Watson (1979:4) says, “A novel is a way of learning about how things were or are-cognitive instrument; and those who distruct stories as evidence should consider how often in conversation we use them to make a point or answer questions.” It means that novel has many functions to inform or make a point or in some subjects of distruct stories.

Novel is usually written in the past tense because the author tells story that happens in the past, the author imagine the story firstly then interpret it in writing so the imagination first then writing in the past tense.

2.2 Character

Character is a very important element in literary works such as novel, drama or even poems. The character can be human, or even animal. In a novel, the character is usually dominated by human as the character, while the character in a novel has his/her own personality equal to human. The personality of the character will lead the character to act such emotional, behavioral, and all the logical things that deals with the problems which be faced by the character. Therefore, the character of the novel mostly has a value of a human in a real life.

Shaw (1972:50) says, “Character is the aggregate if traits and gestures that from the natures of some person or animal.” Character also refers to moral qualities and ethical standards and principles. In literature, character has several other specific meanings notably that a person represented in a story, novel, play, etc. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century in England, a character is a formal sketch of descriptive analysis of a particular virtue or

(19)

7

vice as represented in a person, what is now more often called a character sketch.”

Roberts and Jacobs (1993:131) say, “In fiction, a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors portray characters who are worth caring about , rooting for, and even loving, although there are also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate.

Taylor (1981:62) says, “character is a mere construction of words meant to express an idea or a view of experience and must be considered in relation to other features of the composition, such as action and setting, before its full significance can be appreciated.

Based on four quotations that the character is a form of a characteristic or trait of human or animal, character also refers to the quality of the moral and ethical standards and principles. In literature, the character has some special meanings primarily that of other people who are represented in the novel. And also a character sketch of a formal descriptive analysis of certain virtues, character has two types of flat characters and round characters.

2.3 Plot

Gwynn (2002:7) says that plot may be defined as the sequence of incidents in a story, arranged in dramatic order. One is tempted to insert the word “Chronological” but doing so will exclude many stories that depart from this strict ordering of events. In opposite fashion, novelist sometimes

(20)

8

usesforeshadowing to prevents a story’s outcome from seeming haphazard or contrived.

Kennedy (1991:7) says that plot is the artistic arrangement of those events. It means that the most important element among other elements of fiction because a structure events arising out of conflict. Plot is the logical interaction of the various thematic elements of a tech which lead to a change of the original situation as presented at the outset of the narrative. One of the most important elements in shaping a work of fiction is plot.

Shaw (1972:211) says that plot is a plan or scheme to accomplish a purpose. In literature, plot refers to arrangement of events to achieve an intended effect. A plot is a series of carefully devised and interrelated actions that progresses through a struggle of opposing forces (conflict) to a climax and a denouement. A plot is different from story line (the order or events as they occur).

In a well-done story, all the actions and incidents, speeches, thoughts, and observations are linked together to make up an entirety, sometimes they may be called an organic unity. The essence of this unity is the development and resolution of a conflict,orconflics-in which the protagonist meets and resolves the conflict is called the plot, which has been compared to the map of story, scheme, or blueprint. The plot is based on interactions of causes and effects as they develop sequentially or chronologically. That is, the actions in the story follow one another in time as the protagonist meets and tries to overcome the forces of opposition.

(21)

9 2.4 Setting

Shaw (1972:247) says that a setting is the environment or the surroundings of anything. The term is usually applied in literature to the locale or period in which the action of a play, novel, motion picture, etc. Takes place in theatrical jargon, setting may also refer to scenery or properties.

Taylor (1981:69) says “setting is a major factor in formulation of subject matter and a direct influence on the expression of theme. As in the case of the other factors, however, setting needs to be realistic, nor, in fact, even physical. Historical time (past, present or future) is very effective for certain narratives and an accurate geographical location advisable, but it is also possible to set a fiction in some vague undetermined time, omitting historical references altogether in order to achieve a sense of timelessness and universality.”

Roberts and Jacobs (1993:230) say, “Setting is the natural, manufactured, political, cultural, including everything that characters know and own.”

Based on the three quotations, setting means the time, place, and social reality in which a story takes place or the environment of the story.. It also means that setting is everything that the characters who are in the story know and own.

2.5 Intrinsic Approach

Wallek and Waren (1973:75) say that the approach is based on the intrinsic structural of point of text and literature. This means that the intrinsic approach emphasizes the inter text analysis by describing the elements of prose that are described previously. Relationship with the art of literature and

(22)

10

art of music is very diverse and complicated. Sometimes they influence one to each other. Theory of art and taste can be studied and related to the teory and literary tastes of artist. Besides the issue of sources and influences, inspiration and coorperation, there is another problem, namely literary works often produce the same result with the result of a painting and musical.

According to Wallek and Warren, intrinsic approach is the emphasis on the analysis of the text. Intrinsic approach starts from the literature. In the 19th century popular literature examines the origin. Many methods are based onthe survey of modern literary forms, namely in the French method of explanation of the text there. Many novels see the connection with the work of social structure, study of artistic methods, and tecniques of narrative point of view. 2.6 Descriptive Research

Best (1982:76) says that Descriptive research is purposed to describe what is happening now, and is attemptedto make descriptions, printing, analysis, and interpretation of the conditions that occur at this time. In the descriptive study a comparison of various types is included and it may welcome to attempt to find the relationship between the set of variables.

(23)

11 3.1 Dream and Ambition

Santiago was a 19 years old young man. He was a shepherd from Andalusia, a city in Spain. He had good characteristics and personalities such as enthusiastic, brave, spirit, persistence, and also patient. Santiago’s life was very simple and he lived with his father. He came from a family of farmers. His father wanted him to be a priest when he had been 16, so his father asked him to go to the seminary. However, Santiago made a different decision with his father. Santiago decided to get out from the seminary and never realized what he had done. He did not feel sad of his decision because it could hurt his father. He decided to get out from the seminary and wanted to be a shepherd. He told his father that he would like to be a shepherd than a priest. Because it’s more interesting for him to learn about the world not about the sins of human and knowing God. He wanted to be like that because he always wanted to be a shepherd since he had been a child. Knowing that, his father felt sad. He tried to pursuade his son to change his decision, but his effort failed. Santiago still wanted to be a shepherd. Because his father loved his son so much, he allowed him to be a shepherd. He gave a pouch that contains three gold coins of ancient Spain to his son. He gave his son so thathe could buy sheeps to be herd when he traveled and bought some food during he traveled with his herd. After that, Santiago spends much times with his sheep when he traveled as a shepherd.

One day, he arrived with his sheep in a broke church. He slept near the sycamore tree, but before he slept he had made sure that his sheeps were safe

(24)

12

from hunter. When he was sleeping, he dreamed about the same dream like what he had ever dreamed before. He dreamed about a child who whispered to him when he was in field with his sheep that he would find the treasure if he went to the Pyramid, in Egypt

“ I have had the same dream twice,” he said. “I dreamed that I was in a field with my sheep, when a child appeared and began to play with the animals. I didn’t like people to do that, because the sheep were afraid of strangers. But children always seem to be able to play with them without frightening them... And the child went on playing with my sheep for quite a while, And suddenly, the child took me by both hands and transported me to the Egyptian pyramids.

” The child said to me, “ If you come here, you will find a hidden treasure.’ And, just as she was about to show me the exact location, i woke up. Both times.” (Coelho, 2012:13-14)

He was very interested and happy because he thought that his dream was real. And he could find his hidden treasure in pyramids,Egypt. He wanted to be a rich and successful man, so he really wanted to chase his dream and found the treasure. He also thought that if he could be a rich man he could get a woman to be his wife later. But suddenly, he thought that his dream was such an ilussion and it’s impossible. He was confused about that. He was confused how to get the treasure if it was true, because he did not know the exact location of pyramid. He thought it just a dream and it was just flower of

(25)

13

his sleep. But sometimes, he thought different because his feeling said that there is a treasure on the Pyramids and he wanted to find it.

Finally, he decided to chase his dream to find the hidden treasure in Pyramids,Egypt. He went to Tarifa and there he met a woman, who was famous because she could interpret someone’s dream. The woman was a Gypsy or fortune tellerthat could interpret the meaning of dreams. Santiago told her about his dream and hoped she could show him the exact location of Pyramid. Before he told his dream, the woman asked him to promise that he would gave her one-tenth of the treasure if she interpreted his dream. Santiago agreed with that deal. And the woman interpreted his dream and told him what his meaning meant. She said that Santiago should go to the Pyramid in Egypt and finding the treasure because it was trully happened. Because in his dream there was a child whispered to him that he would find the treasure, and a child is a symbol of God. The woman said that he must chased his dream and went to Pyramid soon because his dream would be come true and he would be a rich man.

“And this is my interpretation: you must go to the pyramids in Egypt. I have never heard of them, but,if it was a child who showed them to you they exist. There you will find a traesure that will make you a rich man.” (Coelho, 2012:14)

Santiago was annoyed with the woman interpretation. Because he wanted her to tell him where was the exact location of Pyramid. She just interpreted Santiago’s dream and did not tell him how to get there. Santiago felt that it just

(26)

14

wasted his time to meet her becasue she would not be able to tell him where the exact location was.

“I only interpret dreams. I don’t know how to turn them into reality. That’s why I have to live off what my daughters provide me with.” (Coelho, 2012:14)

Santiago thought that he had been fooled by the woman. He thought that she could inform him how to get to the Pyramid by interpreted his dream with the woman. However, the woman asked him to give her one-tenth of the treasure if he had found it. He thought it was not fair .

“I’m not going to charge you anything now,” she said. “But I want one-tenth of the treasure if you find it.”(Coelho, 2012: 13)

Santiago was dissapointed and got out from there. He was confused because the woman whom he expected could give him a better decision , but really she could not . He was also confused whether he would go to find the Pyramid or came back to his hometown and met his father. But, He decided to continue finding the treasure.

Then, He continued to find the treasure. As usual, his sheep always accompanied him. He herd his sheep. After that, he stopped a few moments and sit on a bench at a plaza around Tarifa. There he read some books that he had brought inside his bag. While he was reading, an old man came to him. At first, Santiago was afraid and disturbed with that man and thought that the old man was just an elder who wanted to talk with him and it was not important. Because he

(27)

15

felt incoherent talked with the old man, but he remembered that his father had ever told him that he must respect to the people who was older than him.

The old man began the conversation and asked Santiago to lend his books which he read to him. When He held that book, he said that the book was important but irritate because the book told about fate and destiny. Then, Santiago felt confident to be near him. They started the coversation well. They discused the book together.

The old man taught him many lessons of motivation about destiny. The old man asked him that he must tried hard to chase his destiny because when he wanted to chase the destiny, all universe would conspire to help him. And he also taught about life.

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve... Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of universe.... People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being, Maybe that’s why they give up on it so early, too. But that’s the way it is.” (Coelho, 2012: 21,23)

Santiago surprised because the old man knew everything about him. He knew about the name of Santiago’s family one by one. And he also knew what Santiago was looking for. Then, Santiago told about his dream and asked him whether he could help him . The old man could read the thought of person. He

(28)

16

knew about the treasure that Santiago was looking for. He wanted one-tenth of his sheep to be the exchange if he helped him to find the treasure. Santiago did not want to understand about the old man offer, but he had to be dealing with that becasue he wanted that the old man could really help him .

“ Give me one-tenth of your sheep,” said the old man, “ and i’ll tell you how to find the treasure.” (Coelho. 2012:19)

Santiago dealed with the old man’s offer and would bring his sheep . In the next day, he came back to the bench where he did the dealing with the old man. Finally the old man came too. Santiago gave six sheep to the old man and asked the old man to help him to find the treasure. The old man helped him to find the treasure by telling Santiago that he should follow the Omens from God.

“ In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow. You just have to read the omens that he left for you.”(Coelho, 2012: 28)

Santiago had felt that the old man was like the woman whom he had met before because he did not show the exact location of Pyramid. Suddenly, the old man opened his cape, and he was struck by what he had seen. The old man wore a breastplate of heavy gold, covered with precious stones. The old man was really a king. A king from Salem and his name was Melchizedek.

The old man gave him two stones. They were black and white stones. They were called Urim and Thummim. Urim was to signify “Yes” and Thummimwas to signify “No”. They were used to be the omens when Santiago

(29)

17

were unable to read the omens. But the old man said that it will be better if he could make his own decisions.

“ Take these,... They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies ‘yes’ and the white ‘no’. When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so... But, if you can, try to make your own decisions.” (Coelho, 2012:28)

Santiago took that stones and the old man said that whenever he wanted help he would be there with him. He would be there in many form. He would help everyone who want to realize their destiny and at the point where they’re about to give it all up.

“ ...,but i always appear in one form or another. Sometimes I appear in the form of sollution, or a good idea. At other times, at a crucial moment, I make it easier for things to happen. There are other things I do,too, but most of them people don’t realize I’ve done them.” (Coelho, 2012:22)

Santiago felt confident and enthutiastic to chase his dream to find the hidden treasure because the old man gave him new visions to find the treasure with the two stones that would help him. The old man leaved him before he could know what his name was , but he said that his name was Melchizedek.

Santiago was full of spirit, enthusiasm, courage, and persistence to find the treasure. He had had got so many instructions from many things. From the woman who said that he had to find the treasure and also from a king,Melchizedek, who

(30)

had given him some instructions for his journey. Because of the instructions, he finally decided to make effort and long journey to find the treasure.

Santiago left his town Andalusia, Spain. He also had left Tarifa to get the instructions to reach his dream that was to find the treasure. But his journey started with across narrow streets of Tangier. He went there by himself without his sheep. He lost his sheep when he exchanged them to The King whom he met in Tarifa. And after he arrived in Tangier, he wanted to take a rest before he went to another places to find the treasure. He entered in a bar in Tangier. There he saw many men were smoking from a gigantic pipe that they passed from one to the other. Santiago did not care for them. Santiago sit at one seat there, and opened his pouch to take Umim and Thummim out. He wanted to prove whether the two stones could give him omens or not. While he was holding the two stones, many bad men in the bar looked at him in a bad purpose. They wanted to grab it from Santiago. Because they thought that the two stones was rarely found and it would be expensive to sell. Santiago already finished enjoying his drink and food and get ready to get out from there. A young man visited him while he was preparing his bag. The young man could speak spanish and Santiago felt happy with that. During his way to get the treasure, he never met someone who could speak Spanish. The young man intended to help him to go to the Pyramid. Santiago felt glad with him. When they almost reached the door, some men were trying to cheat them by saying that they wanted to buy the two stones. Santiago did not care for them too. But, the men were angry and wanted to hit Santiago and grabbed the stones rudely. Fortunately, he was helped by a young man. The young man pushed the men far and held Santiago’s hand to get out from the bar. Santiago thanked to the young man and it made his trust with the young man increased. At

(32)

first, he did not believe with everyone easily because he was always fooled by many people, since he met the woman and the King.

The young man said to him that they could get to the Pyramid by tomorrow. But he also said that they could get there if only they had two camels. Santiago trusted his friend easily because he really wanted to find the treasure. He gave all of his money to his friend and let him to buy the camels. They walked across the narrow street of Tangier. And they reached at the center of a large plaza there. Then, he saw many people arguing, selling, and others. His friend asked him to wait there because he wanted to buy the camels . Santiago did not care for that, he was amazed by a beautiful sword that he had never seen before. He saw the stall of the sword properly and also waited his friend to come. Unfortunately, his new friend still did not come in a long time. He dissapeared and took all of Santiago’s money away. Santiago was very sad because someone whom he trust so much could do that for him. He had trusted his new friend but he must be cheated by his friend too. He felt desperate and blame God because God was not fair to him. God did not help him when he got many obstacles and when he was fooled by some people. He also hated with people who found their treasure because he would never find his treasure.

“ ... but now I’m sad and alone. I’m going to become bitter and distrustful of people because one person betrayed me. I’m going to hate those who have found their treasure because I never found mine. And I’m going to hold on to what little I have,

(33)

21

because I’m too insignificant to conquer the world.” (Coelho, 2012:37)

Then he opened his pouch, he found his heavy book that he used to sleep as pillow when he was at abandoned church. He also found his jacket and two stones .He felt glad when he looked at the stones. He felt that the stones could help him when he was sad by giving omens. He also felt glad because the two stones could help him in making decisions and gave clues while he was getting lost and almost gave it all up during the journey to find the treasure. He decided that he would continue to find the treasure because the omen told him he had to continue to find his treasure.

Then, he arrived at the highest point in Tarifa. There, he saw at one crystal shop and saw the owner of the shop was cleaning his crystals. He wanted to work there in order to get much money to continue his journey and buy sheep. Because he lost all of his money after he was betrayed by his new friend whom he had trusted so much. He came to the shop and met the owner of the crystal shop. He said that he would like to work to buy some food because he was very hungry. He began to clean the windows. After half an hour all the windows had been cleaned by him. While he was cleaning the window and the crystals, the two visitors came to the store and bought some crystals. The costumers felt amazed because they never saw the crystals that were so clean. The owner felt glad with that moment. He usually was visited by one or two costumers in a day but they did not buy any crystals. But since the coming of Santiago, everything had been changed. Only half an hour he worked, he could get two costumers. After

(34)

22

Santiago had cleaned all the window and crystals, the owner asked him to have lunch with him. They went to a small shop not far from there. While he was eating, the shop owner said that he did not need to clean the window for getting food. Because he believed in the teaching of the Quran which requires him to give food for people who need food or hungry people.

“ You didn’t have to do any cleaning,” he said. “ The Koran requires me to feed a hungry person.” (Coelho, 2012:44)

Surprisingly, the owner asked Santiago to work as a waiter in his shop. He thought that was a good omen because when Santiago worked there, there were two costumers who entered the stores to buy crystals. Santiago was happy to know that, and he said to the shop owner that if he had already had much money, he would go to Pyramid,Egypt tomorrow. The shop owner laughed because it was impossible to go to Pyramid although he could work year by year. The distance from Tangier to Pyramid was very far and it would cost a lot.

He worked every day and as long as he was working, there were so many costumers visited the crystal shop. Every day,the costumer was full and increased. Then, Santiago had a plan to make a rack for the crystal which would be placed in front of the store in order to the visitor could see the crystal from outside the store. He told his plan to the shop owner and he agreed. The shop was really famous because of Santiago’s plan.

The shop owner said that the situation did not change very much after two days the display had been made. Santiago pursuaded him to continue this plan

(35)

23

because it would boost his advantage and luck is on their sides. But, the shop owner still did not want to continue made the display. He just want to follow the Prophet and would be satisfied of what he got .

“The Prophet gave us the Koran, and left us just five obligations to satisfy during our lives. The most important is to believe only in the one true God. The others are to pray five times a day, fast during Ramadan, and be charitable to the poor.” (Coelho, 2012:51)

The shop owner also told Santiago about his dream. His dream was to go to Mecca like all other Moslem in this world dream. He had collected a lot of money to go to Mecca. However that was all just dream, he had not be able to go there. But because the thought of Mecca that kept him alive. That was what had helped him in facing days by days that were all the same. And he was afraid if his dream was realized, he would have no reason to go on living.

The shop owner said the presence of Santiago truly brought blessings for him. Santiago also got a lot of important lessons from the shop owner, such as how to trade crystal, a language that did not require words and about dream. Santiago had worked there for almost one year. He had got much money. But because he had much money, he was confused whether he would continue his journey to find the treasure in Pyramid or came back to Spain, his hometown, and would buy many sheeps. He was afraid if there would be another liar who could cheat him. Suddenly, he remembered the words of Melchizedek who had said that if we wanted something, all the universe conspired to help us in achieving it. And

(36)

24

finally, he decided to follow the King’s instruction to continue his journey to find the treasure.

“ The old king had said “When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” (Coelho, 2012:21)

Santiago left the crystal shop withoutsaying good-bye to the shop owner. Then, he was confused again because he thought that his dream is less important and it would be better to become like the shop owner. But, when he hold Urim and Thummim in his hand, they had transmitted to him the strength and will of the old king. He also thought that he was unique. His dream was not like dream of people in general. He also had met a king who had given him the instructions to follow his dream. It had given him new strength to find the treasure.

Santiago went to a part of warehouse where the caravan would pick the passengers there. When he had arrived, he met with an English man. The English man was from Africa. The Caravan finally arrived with a group of Khalifah. Santiago talked with the English man during the way. The English man was looking for Alchemist who could change metal to be gold. The Alchemist lived in Oases Al-Fayoum. Both of them had the same purposes. They believed in Omens which would help them to find their treasure. The Englishman treasure was The Alchemist and Santiago treasure was real treasure. In Caravan, the English man always read the books which were heavy and full of Physics Pattern. Santiago did not understand about the book. The English man said that all of his life and all of his studies were aimed to find the one true language of the universe. They

(37)

25

travelled to Oases, and he wanted to help the English man to find the Alchemist in Oases. But before they began to depart , the leader of the caravan said that they must only listened to him if they wanted to safe becasue during the way to Oases there would be many obstacles and challenges. Finally, the English man closed the conversation with Santiago because the Caravan had moved. Santiago talked with the leader of the Caravan and told him about his dream. The leader of the Caravan was a good listener, he could understand Santiago’s dream and also he gave some motivations to Santiago by telling about his life story.

When they arrived in Oases, they saw many palm trees, three hundred wells and fifty thousand palm trees, and lots of tents scattered among the trees. In there, they were surrounded by many small kids who were curious inside the Caravan. The leader of Caravan gave instructions to all of them to remain vigilant because there would be conflicts between tribes that would be happened in Oases. After hearing that, The Englishman took a chrome-plate revolver from his purse. Accroding to him, he believed that the thing could help him when he had had challenge. But for him, it was an ordeal because in the pursuit of a dream of course there were trials or challenges to test the courage and bravery. He thought, God was the only one who would put the signs and signals along the way.

In their journey, when they searched the Alchemist, they asked all the women there. But none of them knew who the Alchemist was. Suddenly, a woman came to fetch water at the well. Santiago asked her too whether she knew where the Alchemist lived. The woman was kind-hearted and wise. Her name was Fatima. Fatima told that there was an Alchemist who could cure human disease,

(38)

26

however, suddenly there was a stranger explained that God cured a disease, and he explained some of the Qur’an verses.

“Allah cures our illnesses,” said the man, clearly frightened of the strangers, “ you are looking for which doctors,” He spoke some verses from the Koran, and moved on. (Coelho,2012:91)

When Fatima almost finished to fetch water in well, Santiago expressed his love to her. He had loved her at the first sight. He said that he would like Fatima to be his wife. Fatima was shy and said that he had loved him too. She would always waited for him in Oases until Santiago came back from Pyramid after getting the treasure. She always supported Santiago to chase his dream to find the treasure. Santiago was someone whom she always waited to fill her life.

“ I’ve been waiting for you here at the Oasis for a long time. I have forgotten about my past, about my tradition,...that the dessert would bring me a wonderful present. Now, my present has arrived, and it’s you.” (Coelho,2012:92)

Fatima was a wise girl and her presence would also be the strength for Santiago. Santiago had ever thought to stop continuing the journey to find the treasure, because for him he had found his treasure that was Fatima, his girlfriend. And Fatima was more important than other treasure. However, Fatima kept supporting Santiago to find the treasure. She said that she would always be there waited for him and would always pray for him. Santiago also promised to Fatima that he would come back to her and brought the treasure and would married her.

(39)

27

He continued his journey again. During his journey, he felt that there would be war between tribes in Oases. He had got that feeling because he saw the eagles flight, and he interpreted that there was a dangerous sign. He was in rush to tell the chief of Caravan of what he had seen. The chiefs did not believe in him because the chief thought Oases was neutral teritory and no one would attack the Oases. Santiago was sad because no one believed his words. He decided to go on his way from Oases. When he went out from Oases , he saw astride the animal was a horseman dressed completely in black, with a falcon perched was on his left shoulder. He wore turban and his entire face, except for his eyes, was covered with a black handkerchief. The horseman curved a sword from a cabbard mounted on his saddle and told Santiago that he had dared to interpret the eagles flight meaning. His voice was so loud that made Santiago felt afraid, however, Santiago was still brave to say that he was the one who had interpret the birds. According to him, all sign came from one hand, that is God.

“it is I who dared to do so,” said Santiago. He was reminded of the image of Santiago metamoros, mounted on his white horse, with the infidels beneath his hooves. “Allah created the armies, and he also created the hawks. Allah taught me language of the birds, everything has been written by the same hand” the boy said. (Coelho,2012:106)

The Alchemist taught him so many lessons. The Alchemist also would help him to find the treasure. They rode along way to get to the Pyramids in which Santiago’s treasure would be. The Alchemist told him that he must listened to his

(40)

28

heart and learned or understanded what his heart said because it would help him to find the treasure. While they were riding the horse to Pyramid, they were trapped by tribesman. They were stopped, but the Alchemist always had tricks to make them safe and free from the tribesman. After that, they were stopped again by tribesman. This time the tribesman were from tribal war. The Chief of the tribal war was wise. The Alchemist could not cheat the chief. But The Alchemist said that Santiago would transform himself into the wind. Santiago was afraid of that. He never knew how to change himself to be the wind. It was very impossible to do. And if Santiago failed to transform himself to be the wind, they would be killed. But The Alchemist was smart, he had known that Santiago would be able to transform himself to be the wind. And he said to Santiago that Santiago should not show his fear because the tribesman were brave and they despited cowards. The Alchemist always gave him spirit and suggestion, so that Santiago would not be frustrate and Santiago had to listen to his heart.

“Don’t let them see that you are afraid,” the alchemist said. “ They are brave men, and they despise cowards.” (Coelho,2012:134)

Next day, Santiago took them to the cliff where he had been on the previous in doing demonstrate and he told them all to be seated. He began looked out at the horizon. There were mountains in the distance. And there were dunes, rocks, and plants that insisted on living where survival seemed impossible. A breeze began blow, and tribesman watched him from a distance, taking among themselves in a language that he could not understand.

(41)

29

First, Santiago spoke to the Desert, but the desert could not transform him into wind. The desert suggested to ask for the wind. Next, Santiago asked the wind to transformed him to be the wind. However, the wind also could not transform him into the wind. After that, he asked to the Sun whether Sun could help him, but sun still could not help him to transform him into the wind. Sun suggested to ask to the one who created these all, that is God. He asked to God and God helped him to transform himself into the wind because Santiago had the soul of God. Santiago transformed into the great wind , it blowed everything up around there. Seeing that, the tribesman were afraid. The Chief finally could see the greatness of Allah. It disturbed all things near that, and the boy and the Alchemist could escape from there.

The next day, the Alchemist helped him to go to Pyramid and finding treasure. Toward the end of the afternoon, they came upon a Coptic Monastery. The Alchemist told the escorts that he would return to the camp. The Alchmist knocked on the gate of monastery. A monk dressed in black came to the gate. They spoke for a few minutes in the Coptic, and the Alchemist pursuaded the boy to enter the gate. After that, they went to the kitchen at the back of the monastery. The Alchemist lighted the fire, and the monk brought him some lead, which the Alchemist took from his pouch the strange yellow egg. He scraped from it a silver as an hair, wrapped it in a wax. And added it to the pan in which the lead had melted. When the pan had cool, the monk and Santiago looked at it, dazzled. The lead had dried into the shape of the pan, but it was no longer lead, it was gold.

(42)

30

After that, they returned to the gates of monastery. There, the Alchemist seperated the disk into four parts. He gave gold to the monk and Santiago.

“This is for you”, he said, holding one of the parts out to the monk. It is for generosity to the pilgrism. ( Coelho,2012:147)

The Alchemist turned to the Santiago. He gave gold to him for what he gave to the general. After that, Santiago continued his journey without The Alchemist. The Alchemist believed that Santiago would find his treasure. He continued his journey to find his treasure alone for several hours and listening avidly to what his heart said.

When he arrived at Pyramid, he started to dig hill desert. Along the night, he still dug and he did not find anything. However, he still dug the hill desert. A pair of his hand get injured and he got tired but he must listened to his heart. His heart told that the treasure would be where his tears felt.

“ be aware of the place where you are brought to tears. That’s where I am and there your treasure is.” (Coelho,2012:152)

When Santiago pulled corals that impeded him, suddenly he listened the sound of foot steps and there were some people appeared to him. Santiago was afraid because one of them asked about what Santiago was doing. They were cruel. They pulled him out from hole. One of them checked Santiago’s bag and he found gold that The Alchemist gave in Santiago’s bag. The thief striked him and beated him until he was in blood and his cloths ragged. Santiago was very sad and dissapointing. When he dug the hole again he did not find anything. He shouted to

(43)

31

God and cried because he was always unable to find the treasure but he always got fooled and hurted by many people. When he was frustrate, he stood up shakily and looked once more at the Pyramids. They seemed to laugh at him and his heart bursting with joy. Now he knew where his treasure was. When he continued digging the hole, his shovel hit somethinh solid. An hour later, he had before him a chest of spanish gold coins. There were also precious stones, gold masked adorned with red and white feathers, and stone statues embedded with jewels. The boy took out Urim and Thummim from his bag and placed them in chest because they were also a part of his new treasure.

Santiago realized that life was generous to those who pursued their destiny. After that, he planned to give and proved all of his promise for everyone who had ever helped him to find this treasure. He would give a tenth of his treasure to Gypsy woman. And one of the most importantthing was that he would back to the Oases and married Fatima, his girl.

BIOGRAPHY OF PAULO COELHO

Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, the son of an engineer and a housewife. He attended a Jesuit school, and from a young age Coelho dreamed of becoming a writer. According to Coelho, his parents responded to his artistic aspirations and to his introverted personality by committing him to a mental institution and approving electroconvulsive ("shock") therapy for their son.

Coelho enrolled in law school as a young man but dropped out to travel, through Latin America, North Africa, and Europe. He became involved with a theater group as an actor and director and worked as a journalist, founding a magazine called 2001. He also wrote lyrics for rock songs and collaborated on a political comic strip.

Because of his progressive activities, Coelho was kidnapped and tortured by a Brazilian paramilitary group in 1974. Afterwards, retreating into conventionality, he worked as a music-industry executive.

(49)

37

His life's major turning point occurred when Coelho met a stranger in an Amsterdam café who told him to make the traditional Roman Catholic pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. Coelho did so in 1986. As a result, he experienced an epiphany that readers of The Alchemist will recognize: He decided to follow his dream. Coelho set out to become a writer.

Paulo Coelho’s Career

Inspired by his journey to Santiago de Compostela, Coelho wrote The Pilgrimage: Diary of Magus, about extraordinary events that happen to ordinary people. Published in 1987, the book's commercial and cultural impact was at first negligible.

The following year The Alchemist was published. The novel sold only nine hundred copies initially and was not reprinted. Coelho's next book, Brida, was well-received, however, and as a result, both The Pilgrimage and The Alchemist

became best-sellers.

Indeed, The Alchemist became the best-selling Brazilian book ever and then an international best-seller — one of the best-selling books in history, ultimately.

Coelho has written and published more than twenty-five books in all, including collections of essays and newspaper columns, though most are novels. Some of his best-known books are By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, The Fifth Mountain, Veronika Decides to Die, The Devil and Miss Prym, Warrior of the Light: A Manual, The Zahir, and Eleven Minutes. The author, now internationally recognized, lives with his wife in Europe and in Rio de Janeiro.

Paulo Coelho is unquestionably of the most times, selling more than 100 million books in at least 150 countries internationally. Paulo Coelho has met with a lot of success; his books have been widely translated in a number of languages, earning him the prestigious Guinness

(50)

38

World Record for most translated book by a living author and has received much honor. However, it should be noted that Coelho was not always necessarily celebrated for being the writer that he is today.

39 SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL

While sleeping near a sycamore tree in the sacristy of an abandoned church, Santiago, a shepherd boy, had a recurring dream about a child who told him that he would find a hidden treasure if he traveled to the Egyptian pyramids.

He traveled to Tarifa and met an old woman who could interpret dream. An old woman told Santiago that this dream was prophetic and that he must followed its instructions. Santiago felt dissapointed because the woman could not tell the exact location of his treasure. Next Santiago met a mysterious old man who seemed able to read his mind. This man introduced himself as Melchizedek, or the King of Salem. He told Santiago about good and bad omens and said that it was the shepherd boy's duty to pursue his Destiny after he exchanged his one-tenth sheep to the King. Melchizedek then gave Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, with which to interpret omens.

Santiago purchased a ticket to Tangier, in northern Africa, to which he traveled by boat. Shortly after he arrived there, a thief stole all of Santiago's money, so the shepherd boy decided to look for a way to make enough money to return home. He found work in the shop of a crystal merchant, where Santiago made improvements that reap considerable financial rewards.

After eleven months of working in the shop, Santiago was unsure of how to proceed. Should he return to Andalusia a rich man and buy more sheep? Or

(52)

40

should he cross the vast Sahara in pursuit of the hidden treasure of his dreams? He joined a caravan to travel to Egypt.

Santiago met an Englishman who wanted to learn the secret of alchemy, or turning any metal into gold, from a famous alchemist who lived at an oasis on the way to the pyramids. While traveling, Santiago began listening to the desert and discovering the Soul of the World. The caravan eventually reached the oasis, and there Santiago met an Arab girl named Fatima and felt in love with her instantly. The caravan leader gathered the travelers together and told them that tribal warfare prevented them from continuing their journey.

Santiago wandered from the oasis into the desert and, seeing two hawks fighting in the sky, had a vision of an army entering the oasis. Because attacking an oasis is a violation of the rules of the desert, Santiago shared his vision with the oasis's tribal chieftain. Soon afterward, Santiago was confronted by a black-garbed, veiled stranger with a sword, who sit atop a white horse. It was the alchemist. The tribal chieftain armed his men, and they were well-prepared when the oasis was indeed invaded. The alchemist offered to cross the desert with Santiago.

Soon the two men entered into an area of intense tribal warfare. Warriors held the two men captive, but eventually allowed them to continue their journey after Santiago transformed himself as wind that made all the tribesman afraid. The alchemist told Santiago that he need to return to the oasis, and that the rest of the trip was Santiago's plan to make alone so that he could claim his treasure.

(53)

Santiago arrived at the Egyptian pyramids and began to dig. He found nothing buried in the ground. Suddenly there were two strangers came to him and they beat Santiago and robed him of his money. After he told them of his dream, though, one of the thieves recounts his own dream about a buried treasure in the sacristy of an abandoned church.

Finally, Santiago could find his hidden treasure when he saw the Pyramids smiled at him. He found a chest of spanish gold coins. There were also precious stones, gold masked adorned with red and white feathers, and stone statues embedded with jewels. He would give a tenth of his treasure to Gypsy woman. And one of the most important thing was that he would back to the Oases and married Fatima, his girl.

He also wrote lyrics for rock songs and collaborated on a political comic strip.

Because of his progressive activities, Coelho was kidnapped and tortured by a Brazilian paramilitary group in 1974. Afterwards, retreating into conventionality, he worked as a music-industry executive.

Inspired by his journey to Santiago de Compostela, Coelho wrote The

Pilgrimage: Diary of Magus, about extraordinary events that happen to ordinary

people. Published in 1987, the book's commercial and cultural impact was at first negligible.

The following year The Alchemist was published. The novel sold only nine hundred copies initially and was not reprinted. Coelho's next book, Brida, was well-received, however, and as a result, both The Pilgrimage and The Alchemist became best-sellers.

Indeed, The Alchemist became the best-selling Brazilian book ever and then an international best-seller — one of the best-selling books in history, ultimately.

Coelho has written and published more than twenty-five books in all, including collections of essays and newspaper columns, though most are novels. Some of his best-known books are By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, The

Fifth Mountain, Veronika Decides to Die, The Devil and Miss Prym, Warrior of

the Light: A Manual, The Zahir, and Eleven Minutes. The author, now

internationally recognized, lives with his wife in Europe and in Rio de Janeiro. Paulo Coelho is unquestionably of the most times, selling more than 100 million books in at least 150 countries internationally. Paulo Coelho has met with a lot of success; his books have been widely translated in a number of languages, earning him the prestigious Guinness

World Record for most translated book by a living author and has received much honor. However, it should be noted that Coelho was not always necessarily celebrated for being the writer that he is today.

should he cross the vast Sahara in pursuit of the hidden treasure of his dreams?
