3.1 Dream and Ambition

Santiago was a 19 years old young man. He was a shepherd from Andalusia, a city in Spain. He had good characteristics and personalities such as enthusiastic, brave, spirit, persistence, and also patient. Santiago’s life was very simple and he lived with his father. He came from a family of farmers. His father wanted him to be a priest when he had been 16, so his father asked him to go to the seminary. However, Santiago made a different decision with his father. Santiago decided to get out from the seminary and never realized what he had done. He did not feel sad of his decision because it could hurt his father. He decided to get out from the seminary and wanted to be a shepherd. He told his father that he would like to be a shepherd than a priest. Because it’s more interesting for him to learn about the world not about the sins of human and knowing God. He wanted to be like that because he always wanted to be a shepherd since he had been a child. Knowing that, his father felt sad. He tried to pursuade his son to change his decision, but his effort failed. Santiago still wanted to be a shepherd. Because his father loved his son so much, he allowed him to be a shepherd. He gave a pouch that contains three gold coins of ancient Spain to his son. He gave his son so thathe could buy sheeps to be herd when he traveled and bought some food during he traveled with his herd. After that, Santiago spends much times with his sheep when he traveled as a shepherd. One day, he arrived with his sheep in a broke church. He slept near the sycamore tree, but before he slept he had made sure that his sheeps were safe 12 from hunter. When he was sleeping, he dreamed about the same dream like what he had ever dreamed before. He dreamed about a child who whispered to him when he was in field with his sheep that he would find the treasure if he went to the Pyramid, in Egypt “ I have had the same dream twice,” he said. “I dreamed that I was in a field with my sheep, when a child appeared and began to play with the animals. I didn’t like people to do that, because the sheep were afraid of strangers. But children always seem to be able to play with them without frightening them... And the child went on playing with my sheep for quite a while, And suddenly, the child took me by both hands and transported me to the Egyptian pyramids. ” The child said to me, “ If you come here, you will find a hidden treasure.’ And, just as she was about to show me the exact location, i woke up. Both times.” Coelho, 2012:13-14 He was very interested and happy because he thought that his dream was real. And he could find his hidden treasure in pyramids,Egypt. He wanted to be a rich and successful man, so he really wanted to chase his dream and found the treasure. He also thought that if he could be a rich man he could get a woman to be his wife later. But suddenly, he thought that his dream was such an ilussion and it’s impossible. He was confused about that. He was confused how to get the treasure if it was true, because he did not know the exact location of pyramid. He thought it just a dream and it was just flower of 13 his sleep. But sometimes, he thought different because his feeling said that there is a treasure on the Pyramids and he wanted to find it. Finally, he decided to chase his dream to find the hidden treasure in Pyramids,Egypt. He went to Tarifa and there he met a woman, who was famous because she could interpret someone’s dream. The woman was a Gypsy or fortune tellerthat could interpret the meaning of dreams. Santiago told her about his dream and hoped she could show him the exact location of Pyramid. Before he told his dream, the woman asked him to promise that he would gave her one-tenth of the treasure if she interpreted his dream. Santiago agreed with that deal. And the woman interpreted his dream and told him what his meaning meant. She said that Santiago should go to the Pyramid in Egypt and finding the treasure because it was trully happened. Because in his dream there was a child whispered to him that he would find the treasure, and a child is a symbol of God. The woman said that he must chased his dream and went to Pyramid soon because his dream would be come true and he would be a rich man. “And this is my interpretation: you must go to the pyramids in Egypt. I have never heard of them, but,if it was a child who showed them to you they exist. There you will find a traesure that will make you a rich man.” Coelho, 2012:14 Santiago was annoyed with the woman interpretation. Because he wanted her to tell him where was the exact location of Pyramid. She just interpreted Santiago’s dream and did not tell him how to get there. Santiago felt that it just 14 wasted his time to meet her becasue she would not be able to tell him where the exact location was. “I only interpret dreams. I don’t know how to turn them into reality. That’s why I have to live off what my daughters provide me with.” Coelho, 2012:14 Santiago thought that he had been fooled by the woman. He thought that she could inform him how to get to the Pyramid by interpreted his dream with the woman. However, the woman asked him to give her one-tenth of the treasure if he had found it. He thought it was not fair . “I’m not going to charge you anything now,” she said. “But I want one-tenth of the treasure if you find it.”Coelho, 2012: 13 Santiago was dissapointed and got out from there. He was confused because the woman whom he expected could give him a better decision , but really she could not . He was also confused whether he would go to find the Pyramid or came back to his hometown and met his father. But, He decided to continue finding the treasure. Then, He continued to find the treasure. As usual, his sheep always accompanied him. He herd his sheep. After that, he stopped a few moments and sit on a bench at a plaza around Tarifa. There he read some books that he had brought inside his bag. While he was reading, an old man came to him. At first, Santiago was afraid and disturbed with that man and thought that the old man was just an elder who wanted to talk with him and it was not important. Because he 15 felt incoherent talked with the old man, but he remembered that his father had ever told him that he must respect to the people who was older than him. The old man began the conversation and asked Santiago to lend his books which he read to him. When He held that book, he said that the book was important but irritate because the book told about fate and destiny. Then, Santiago felt confident to be near him. They started the coversation well. They discused the book together. The old man taught him many lessons of motivation about destiny. The old man asked him that he must tried hard to chase his destiny because when he wanted to chase the destiny, all universe would conspire to help him. And he also taught about life. “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve... Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of universe.... People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being, Maybe that’s why they give up on it so early, too. But that’s the way it is.” Coelho, 2012: 21,23 Santiago surprised because the old man knew everything about him. He knew about the name of Santiago’s family one by one. And he also knew what Santiago was looking for. Then, Santiago told about his dream and asked him whether he could help him . The old man could read the thought of person. He 16 knew about the treasure that Santiago was looking for. He wanted one-tenth of his sheep to be the exchange if he helped him to find the treasure. Santiago did not want to understand about the old man offer, but he had to be dealing with that becasue he wanted that the old man could really help him . “ Give me one-tenth of your sheep,” said the old man, “ and i’ll tell you how to find the treasure.” Coelho. 2012:19 Santiago dealed with the old man’s offer and would bring his sheep . In the next day, he came back to the bench where he did the dealing with the old man. Finally the old man came too. Santiago gave six sheep to the old man and asked the old man to help him to find the treasure. The old man helped him to find the treasure by telling Santiago that he should follow the Omens from God. “ In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow. You just have to read the omens that he left for you.”Coelho, 2012: 28 Santiago had felt that the old man was like the woman whom he had met before because he did not show the exact location of Pyramid. Suddenly, the old man opened his cape, and he was struck by what he had seen. The old man wore a breastplate of heavy gold, covered with precious stones. The old man was really a king. A king from Salem and his name was Melchizedek. The old man gave him two stones. They were black and white stones. They were called Urim and Thummim. Urim was to signify “Yes” and Thummimwas to signify “No”. They were used to be the omens when Santiago 17 were unable to read the omens. But the old man said that it will be better if he could make his own decisions. “ Take these,... They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies ‘yes’ and the white ‘no’. When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so... But, if you can, try to make your own decisions.” Coelho, 2012:28 Santiago took that stones and the old man said that whenever he wanted help he would be there with him. He would be there in many form. He would help everyone who want to realize their destiny and at the point where they’re about to give it all up. “ ........,but i always appear in one form or another. Sometimes I appear in the form of sollution, or a good idea. At other times, at a crucial moment, I make it easier for things to happen. There are other things I do,too, but most of them people don’t realize I’ve done them.” Coelho, 2012:22 Santiago felt confident and enthutiastic to chase his dream to find the hidden treasure because the old man gave him new visions to find the treasure with the two stones that would help him. The old man leaved him before he could know what his name was , but he said that his name was Melchizedek. Santiago was full of spirit, enthusiasm, courage, and persistence to find the treasure. He had had got so many instructions from many things. From the woman who said that he had to find the treasure and also from a king,Melchizedek, who 18 had given him some instructions for his journey. Because of the instructions, he finally decided to make effort and long journey to find the treasure.
