MOTTO AND DEDICATION
In the Name of Allah

“Allah is the one and only”
Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the
alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who
understand. Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and
lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and
the earth: Our Lord! Thou hast not created this vain! Glory be to
thee save us then from the chastisement of the fire
(Quran 3:190-191)

Keyakinan adalah satu kekuatan dahsyat yang dimiliki manusia. Dia
mampu mematahkan dan menggapai segala sesuatu yang diinginkannya.
Bahkan dengan keyakinan, seseorang bisa membuat dirinya ‘ada’.

GRADER OF AL-IZZAH ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL
IN ENGLISH SPEECH PROGRAM
ABSTRACT
This study is intended to find out the students’ linguistic problems of speech.
It was conducted at Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School because speech program is one

of obligatory programs which must be followed by all the students and conducted
every week. Furthermore, many students have different ability and knowledge on
English speech. As the result, the students have linguistic problems when they
performed the speech.
This study was a descriptive qualitative research because (1) it described the
fact of the subject, (2) the researcher worked in natural setting, and (3) the researcher
was the key instrument in collecting the data. The sample was the second grader of
junior high school on academic years 2010-2011. The instruments used were direct
observation, closed questionnaire and unstructure interview.
The finding of this study reveals that there were five linguistic problems in
English speech. They were pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, vocabulary, fluency
and unity. This study also reveals the teacher’s strategy to minimize the students’
problems in English speech program.

Key words: (linguistic problem, speech)

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This introductory chapter provides the basic ideas related to the study
carried out. This chapter presents background of the study, the statement of the
problem, the purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation
and the definition of the key term.
1.1

Background of the Study
English is an international language used to communicate by most people all

over the world. It is the main tool to communicate with other nations in the world.
Therefore, studying English is very important.
Teacher of Al-Izzah Boarding School concern to broaden their students
knowledge through English. They realize that English is much needed for their
future career. Therefore, they create speech program and expected that speech
program increase students’ capability in speaking.
Speech is a message presented to audience through words, sound, and action
that contains ideas and feelings selected and organized by the speaker but
understood and interpreted by each individual member of the audience.
(Venderber and Verderber, 2003:5). Based on the statement above, we can see
that speech is the way to deliver the ideas or knowledge to audience. Speech itself
is a part of public speaking.
In public speaking, students should have speaking ability because public
speaking emphasis is not only on the ability to speak but also on the ability to
communicate ideas to the audience. According to Metcalfe (2000: XXI), public

1

2

speaking is a building process, wherein students gradually acquire skill in speech
research, organization and delivery. It means, public speaking is one of the
important things in communication because it will develop ability to clearly
express the idea and thoughts in front of other people.
The importance of public speaking according to Vanderber and Katleen
(2003) is: first, public speaking skill empowers the ability to communicate
complex ideas and information in a way that all members of the audience can
understand; second, public speaking empowers ability to influence the attitudes
and behavior of other people; and third, public speaking empowers ability to
achieve career goals and to participate in democratic process.
From the statement above, good public speaking skill are empowering,
putting in a better position to advocate for interest and to control what happens to
us. When students are motivated to speak in public, it means that they have
bravery to deliver their speaking. But most of students were nervous when having
presentation or speaking in front of people. Damayanti (2004) in her thesis “A
study on students’ problems in learning speaking at SMA I Kejayaan Pasuruan”
mentioned that the problems faced by students are 39% in grammar, 36% in
vocabulary, 13% in presentation, and the last 12% in choosing topic for
presentation.
From that perspective, the researcher is interested to investigate the problems
in speech faced by students of Al-Izzah Boarding School. The speech program at
Al-Izzah is informal education conducted every week and the students’ present
speech delivered in English three times in a week.

3

1.1.1 Statement of the Problem
Based on the explanation in the background of study, the researcher wants
to investigate a study on problems faced by students of Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding
School in English speech program. And the researcher stated the prolems as
follows:
1)

What are the linguistic problems faced by students in English speech
program at Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School?

2)

What does the teacher do to minimize the students’ linguistic problems in
English speech program at Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School?

1.2

Purpose of the Study
The purposes of the study are:
1)

To know the students’ linguistic problems in English speech program at
Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School.

2)

To know the teacher’s ways to minimize the students’ problems in
English speech program at Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School.

1.3

The Significance of the study.
The researcher hopes that this study will be able to give contributions for the

teachers and the readers.
This study is expected to give feed back to English teachers at Al-Izzah
Islamic Boarding School to have better skill in teaching techniques especially
when teachers want to teach speech. Besides, the teachers will get the theoretical

4

information about linguistics and non-linguistics problems, so that they can
anticipate those problems.
For the reader, the result of this study can be a reference for other
researchers who want to conduct the further research on the similar problem.

1.4

Scope and Limitation.
This study focuses on investigating the students’ linguistic problems in

speech program at Al-Izzah Islamic Boarding School and the teacher ways to
minimize those problems. It is limited in the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary,
fluency and unity.

1.5

Definition of Key Terms
In this section, the researcher would like to define the key terms, which are

related to this research, to avoid ambiguity and misinterpretation. The important
terms include the following:
- Problem is a situation in which a person is motivated to reach a goal but
attainment of the goal is blocked by some obstacle (Klein, 1987).
- Linguistic Problem is the problem which come from the linguistic itself and
can caused difficulties to people who are studying it. Some linguistic factors
that can cause difficulties to the student are: system of sound, grammar,
vocabulary, language style, dialect and the background of the culture (Sadtono,
1992).
- Non-Linguistic Problem is the study of human language. The areas of the
study include students, teacher, method, materials, facilities, time, frequency of

5

learning, native speaker, society, explore, goals, and government’s policy
(Sadtono, 1992).
- Speech is message presented to an audience through words, sound, and action
that contains ideas and interpreted by each individual member of the audience
(Vanderber and Vanderber, 2003: 5).
- Public speaking is special kind of communication event and is generally more
formal, planned, and organized than most other communication exchange (Plax
and Kearney, 2003: 6).
