E. Basic Assumption

Vocabulary is important in language learning. It is the central of language. Mastering vocabulary helps students to understand in communication both written and oral. Therefore, the major aim of most teaching English program in Elementary School is to help students to gain a large vocabulary of useful words. In learning vocabulary, there are difficulties that might be faced by the learner as young learner because it is new language for them that is very different from students’ mother tongue. Based on the background of the study, the students are difficult to remember the vocabulary. Therefore, it would be better for teacher to know the appropriate strategies used to help them learning vocabulary so that they learn it successfully. Much of vocabulary of children’s learning consists of concrete things. It means that in teaching vocabulary to children, there are plenty of object that can used to show meaning. Teacher can bring or point to objects in the classroom or objects outside the classroom. Introducing new words by showing the real object often helps pupils to memorize the words through visualization than mere repetition. Realia has a concept to overcome the children’s difficulties in learning especially vocabulary. In presenting vocabulary, the using of realia provides opportunity for students to associate material on the text book with real life situation. Realia can illustrate the meaning of words by associating words and objects directly. It helps students to get more senses in their mind. By getting more senses, it can help students to enter the words in their mind and built up a vocabulary network. Besides, realia provides the activities that are meaningful through deep experience during teaching and learning process. It has close 23 commit to user relation with the children because children remember best when they have done with the words they are learning. So it will be beneficial if realia conducted to improve students’ vocabulary mastery and it is assumed that using realia can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
