Clever Characteristics of John Doe

begged for her life, and for the life of your baby inside her… you didn‟t know ” Walker, 1994: 119. This immediately brings Mills to become enraged, grief, and horror. Somerset tries to stop him, tells him to throw his gun, because if Mil ls shoots Doe, he will win “He wants this He wants you to do it ” Walker, 1994: 118; but Mills is still pointing his gun to Doe‟s head. “Kill me” Walker, 1994: 118 says John Doe. Somerset suddenly brings out his blade in order to prevent Mills action for killing Doe. But, Mills notices it, so he shoots Somerset‟s shoulder instead. Then, he empties his bullets into John Doe‟s head. John Doe has his eyes on Mills from the beginning since his arrival as newcomer in the city. He finds Mills as a sinner of wrath, because he shows that he is a kind of person which is temperamental, brash, and feeling free to curse every time he gets angry. It is proven after Somerset and Mills visited Victor‟s apartment, and they are caught in John Doe‟s plan. Mills feels insulted by urine sample, hair sample, stool sample, and finger nails of Victor; Mills says “He laughing at us” Walker, 1994: 55. They are found under the sheet of Victor‟s bed put in an open shoebox with the note “TO THE DETECTIVES, FROM ME” Walker, 1994: 54. SOMERSET The way this has gone till now, I wouldn‟t have thought it was possible, but we may have underestimated this guy. MILLS I want him bad. I don‟t just want to catch him anymore. I want to hurt him. SOMERSET Listen to me. He‟s all about playing games. MILLS No kidding No fucking kidding SOMERSET We have to divorce ourselves from emotions here. No matter how hard it is, we have to stay focused on the details. MILLS I don‟t know about you, but I feed off my emotions. Walker, 1994: 55-56 This concludes that Doe‟s revelation plan is completed by his dead body for the sin of envy and Mills embodiment of wrath as the last sin. John Doe shows his cleverness to manage a complexity plan. In Zanjani‟s Screenpla y: movie critic or literature? , he states that one way to characterize the character by observing the choice of name 2006: 73. John Doe chooses his own name by his own will. John Doe is not his real name. Somerset says “Because he is John Doe, by choice” Walker, 1994: 97. The name of John Doe is apparently having a meaning. Hornby‟s Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary mentions that John Doe is “a name used for a person whose name is not known or is kept secret ” 2000: 728. John Doe uses the name of John Doe to show that he is unidentified man for sure. He is smart to decide using name of John Doe to cover his identity.

7. Methodical

Along with John Doe‟s intelligence to hide his identity, he is also very careful. In the screenplay, there is no description how John Doe kills those victim in actions. From the gluttony victim, greed victim, sloth victim, lust victim, pride victim, and even Mills‟ wife, the indications are just found through the crime scenes and the perspectives of Mills and Somerset. He is really thoughtful and careful in every step that he makes in order to keep him in secret. John Doe shows that he is a type of person who is very organized and structured even though he has to take a long time. He is willing to spend a lot of time to punish the victims as a purpose to make them feel tortures. Based on Somerset‟s conclusion about gluttony crime, John Doe takes his time not in hurry to make an obese man feels sick and suffers. SOMERSET He ate his fill, and was forced to continue eating... till his body rejected the food. The killer held a bucket under him, and then kept serving. He took his time. The coroner says this might have gone on for more than twelve hours … Walker, 1994: 18 His organized characteristic also exists in the way he murders Mr. Eli Gould. He spends more than a day in Gould‟s apartment. Gould‟s body is found at Monday night, but the office is closed in whole day of Monday. “Which means, as long as the gluttony killing was done before the weekend, our killer could‟ve gotten in here on Friday” Walker, 1994: 38 says Mills. He has no problem at all to keep steady at Gould‟s office in order to wait his victim to think which part of his body that will be cut first as said by Somerset “All day Saturday, and all day Sunday… There‟s a gun in your face… but, what part of your body is expendable ” Walker, 1994: 39. The most crucial point of his methodical character happens when he takes care of Victor for one year by putting tubes for his urine. “The type of intestinal fortitude it must take… to keep a man bound for a full year. To connect tubes to his genitals. ” Walker, 1994: 60 says Somerset. There is also a “snake under the bed” Walker, 1994: 53. Snake here means a long wire used to clean a duct which is clogged up. He cleans the tubes in routine times. He seems extremely patient to spend his time to keep giving Victor the best tortured feeling as Somerset says “and worst of all, he‟s patient” Walker, 1994: 60. He even pays the rent of Victor apartment each month which means that his visit is never absent. SOMERSET reading one sheet Victor‟s landlord says an envelope of cash was in the office mailbox each month. He says, quote, “I never heard a single complaint from the tenant in apartment three-o-one, and nobody ever complained about him. He‟s the best tenant I‟ve ever had.” Walker, 1994: 58 The reason why the landlord never hears any complain is because Victor is found in a condition which is terribly heartbreaking. He will be dead right away if he is shock. John Doe makes him suffer for one year but not directly kills him. Even, Victor chews his own tongue for long time ago. He lets him survives on his suffering as what Doctor said on the following. DOCTOR A year of immobility seems about right, judging by the deterioration of the muscles and the spine. Blood tests show a whole smorgasbord of drugs in his systems; from crack to heroin... even an antibiotic which must have been administered to keep the bed sores from infecting. Walker, 1994: 57 Even if his brain were not mush, which it is… he chewed off his own tongue long ago. Walker, 1994: 58

B. The Psychopathic Behavior of John Doe Related to Seven Deadly Sins

In this subchapter, the writer explains the relation between John Doe ‟s psychopathic behavior and his intention to use seven deadly sins. John Doe suffers a mental disorder called psychopathic behavior. He acts, thinks, and says different ways from normal people. His different thoughts and actions cause unusual things happened in his life. For instance, he takes a religious precept to become a basic reason to murder people. He is religious person for sure because he believes that God exists. However, he does not realize that he has abnormal behavior and thought. Normal people who are religious or even not will think that murdering people is a criminal deed and they agree that it is wrong and not allowed by God and society. But, what happens to John Doe is that he assumes that murdering people as a punishment is the right action. His mind is limited by his own capacity to digest the meaning of seven deadly sins itself as a moral teaching to prevent humans to do negative deeds. He only pays attention on seven deadly sins as the roots of evil deeds that have to be reduced or even vanished. He forgets about other religious precepts such as Ten Commandments, Our Father‟s Prayer, and bible teachings. The reason why John Doe acts abnormally is his psychopathic behavior. In order to know the relation of John Doe‟s psychopathic behavior and the reason why he chooses seven deadly sins as his basic reason to kill people, firstly the writer needs to examine his characteristics which reveal psychopathic be havior. Later, John Doe‟s psychopathic behavior reveals his unconsciousness to murder people by using religious precept. His motivation is uncovered through his behavior which shows identical characteristics with psychopath. From the first subchapter, John Doe is described into seven characteristics; loner, sadistic, selfish and egocentric, bookworm, religious, clever, and methodical. Some of those characteristics reveal the characteristics of psychopathic behavior. The first characteristic of John Doe which reveals the psychopathic behavior is a loner for both by a choice and social rejection. Coleman and Broen‟s Abnormal Psychology and Modern Life states that one of the characteristics of psychopath is antisocial behavior which is considered as incompetent to be loyal to others, society, or moral values driving him to be rejected socially 1972: 366. John Doe has an antisocial behavior. John Doe is rejected by society because he is viewed as incapable man to show appropriate reaction to appreciate the kindness from others Cleckley, 1988: 354. This condition in result drives John Doe to be a solo for everything he does. He does not care for what people think about him or any kind of circumstance. He ignores all obligations in society Cleckley, 1988: 341. The second characteristic of John Doe which reveals the psychopathic behavior is his selfishness. As stated in Cleckley‟s The Mask of Sanity that psychopath is pathologically egocentric and unable to love 1988: 347. He puts no affection to anyone because he only matters his business. He exaggerates his selfishness into something which is difficult to be accepted by society. In addition, he has incapacity of love which brings him to have no deep feelings such as mature, wholehearted anger, consistent wrath, truthful, sorrow, maintain of pride, deep joyfulness, and despair. His egoism also shows his characteristic for having remorseless. As stated in Fredy Wijaya‟s undergraduate thesis entitled Psychopathic
