Abstract
Bell is one of important tool that used by Hindu priest in performing Hinduism ceremonys in Bali. Making of bell in Bali is mainly focused in Klungkung district, the process is done traditionally with investment
casting method. This causes bell that are made can not be quality ascertained because there are parameter which is difficult to control such as the alloy composition, preheating temperature and the mold
material. Since there is no research about that problem, the writer was interested carrying out a research with topic The Influence Of Mold Material And Preheating Temperature Toward Bronze Mechanical
properties And Microstructure At Bell-Making Process With Investment Casting Method. Research is carried out with making specimen from bronze material that usually used by bell crafter generally with
composition 80Cu-20Sn, with method investment casting and then by varying the mold material which is clay traditional method and gypsum modern method and temperature variation of preheating that is
310 °C, 410 °C and 510 °C. Every specimen is photographed its microstructure to observe what kind of phases formed and then continued with Vickers hardness test to get the hardness value of each
specimen. Result of research shows the increase of preheating temperature will tend to increasing the hardness. Lowest hardness obtained at clay mold with preheating temperature 310 °C which is 98 HVN
whereas highest hardness obtained at gypsum mold with preheating temperature 410 °C which is 290 HVN. observation of microstructure indicates that increase of preheating temperature made the grain phase of
α+δ eutectoid which determine the hardness of bronze tends to be jagged-thin form and the porosity formed tends to be less often compared to lower preheating temperature.
