G. Research Procedure

This part specified about the procedure of performing the study. The research procedure applied in this study was adapted from Kemp’s Instructional Design Model and RD plan proposed by Borg and Gall 2007. Some main steps that should be employed were as follows. 1. Identify Learners’ Characteristics The researcher collected data about the students’ characteristics, needs, problems, and preferences. 2. Specify Goals The goals of the study were formulated by adapting the Standard Competences. 3. Identify learning objectives The researcher formulation the detailed descriptions of what the students were able to do after completing the lesson and put the descriptions as learning indicators. 4. List the subject content The content of the materials were listed and the animated movies were chosen. The method of Task-Based was also added in this step. 5. Selecting Teaching Learning Activities The researcher selected the activities in the instructional materials. 6. Evaluate the instructional materials The researcher delivered evaluation questionnaires to the evaluators 48 7. Revise the instructional materials The designed materials were revised using the comments, suggestions, and feedback from the evaluation result. CHAPTER IV RESEARCH RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter describes the result of the research and discussion about the development of English Listening instructional materials for students in the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Sleman using animated movies. Chapter four provides the answers of the problem formulation in the first chapter. Regarding the research problems, this chapter is divided into two parts. The first part is intended to answer the first question and discusses the steps in designing the materials. The second part of the chapter discusses the final result of the material development.

A. Steps of Designing the Materials

In order to answer the first question of the research problems, the researcher combined five steps of Borg and Gall’s RD model 2007 and Kemp’s instructional design model 1977. The models were elaborated into five steps. They were Research and Information Collecting, Planning, Developing Preliminary Form of Product, and Main Revision. These steps cover the elements of Kemp’s 1977 instructional design model.

1. Research and Information Collecting Stage

In order to collect supporting information to conduct the study, the researcher obtained information about the eighth grade students’ characteristics, needs, problems, and preferences. The information collected was beneficial as the
