CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW, CONCEPTS, AND THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
2.1 Literature Review
There are some works which have similar topic and are still related with this study. In this part, three undergraduate theses and one international article are
reviewed. The first undergraduate thesis is written by Wiryawati 2007 entitled The
Main Character in the Novel Mirror Image by Sandra Brown. This thesis analyzes the character of the novel based on the three dimensions of the main
character. The writer uses a theory of characters proposed from Kenney 1966: 27-28. The strengths of this thesis is the structure of the paragraph; it organizes
information and ideas to the reader from general ideas to the specific ones. However, this thesis also has a weakness in regard to the writing format. The
writer doe s not mention or uses other’s thesis as a comparison to her thesis. What
is relevant is that this study uses the same topic and theory, which is about characters and uses the theory of three dimensions of characters. The fantasy
romance novel is used in Wiryawati’s thesis, while a movie script of a dark
fantasy story is used in this present study.

The other undergraduate is written by Andewi 2009. Her thesis is entitled
The Analysis of Main Character in Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia “Prince Caspian” based on Physiological, Sociological and Psychological
Dimension. This thesis analyzes the three dimensions of the main character in the novel. The writer uses a theory of character proposed by Kenney 1966: 27 and
three types of characters based on the function and position proposed by Tarigan 1993: 76. The theory of characterization from Di Yanni 2001: 56 is also used
as well as the theory proposed by Warren and Wellek 1955 which mentions various dimensions of characters. As a result, the writer mentions the main
character with the analysis of various dimensions. There is no error in spelling and punctuation marks found in the thesis. The weakness of this thesis is in the scope
of writing. The relevance between Andewi’s with this present study is that both
discuss the same topic, that is, the main character and the three dimensions of characters, but the data source used is different. An adventure novel , whereas a
dark fantasy action movie script is used in this present study. The next undergraduate thesis which is reviewed is written by Budiman
2009 entitled The Analysis of the Main Character in the Novel The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. In his thesis, he analyzes the main character
and how the psychological aspects contribute to the motivation of the main character in this story. As a result, the writer mentions that the main character is
Huckleberry Finn as written in the title of the novel with the psychological analysis. In analyzing the character in the novel, the writer uses the theory of
characterization proposed by Kenney 1966: 34-35 and theory proposed by
9
Bernhardt 1953: 3 about theory of psychology. In this thesis, the writer does not organize his paragraph well, so he cannot convey the information and ideas
gradually. As the data source, an adventure novel is used, while a dark fantasy action movie script is used in this present study.
An international article is also reviewed in the present study. The international article is written by Thomas Ventura 2002 entitled Psychoanalysis
in Allpsych Journal. It is stated that psycho analysis is probably the most widely recognized theory in psychology and has been integrated into our culture through
novels, poetry, dramas and movie criticism. The terms such as unconscious, repressed, ego and denial are used in everyday conversation to describe mental
states and reasons for human behavior. This study has interesting topic which discusses the psycho analysis. The
Ventura’s article focuses on the discussion on psychoanalysis, while this study focuses on the discussion on the three dimensions
of the main character and the relation among those three dimensions.
