5.2.1 Suggestions for Teachers

Here are some suggestions for the teachers of English who implement portfolio assessment in their class. 5.2.1.1 Explaining the students about portfolio For teachers who will use portfolio assessment in their class, teachers need to first explain to the students about portfolio itself at the beginning of the course. The teachers need to explain what portfolio is and then clarify its position in writing class, whether portfolio is only used as additional assessment tool or it is used as the main assessment tool in writing class. The teachers also have to explain how much portfolio will influence students’ final mark. Moreover, teachers also need to give clear instruction for the students how to deal with portfolio assessment – what students need to do to achieve good mark. This will make students become more aware of the position of portfolio so that they will be more serious in completing their portfolio. 5.2.1.2 Giving clear feedback for the students As always, feedback is very important in every assessment. In order to make the assessment effective, portfolio requires feedback both from the teacher and peers. By giving feedback, teacher will let the students know their proficiency level, their skill and their weaknesses so that the students know what they have to do next to make progress in their learning. With this feedback, students will learn; therefore, teachers should give clear feedback for students’ portfolio so it will 65 make the students easier to learn. If teachers also ask students to give feedback for their other friends, teachers need to make sure that students really check their friends’ portfolio and give clear feedback and right correction. 5.2.1.3 Discussing students’ mistakes in class In the learning process, students need to learn from mistakes, not only from their mistakes but also from their friends’ mistakes. Therefore, discussing students’ mistakes in front of the class will help the whole class to learn. 5.2.1.4 Providing a folder or file manager for students to keep their portfolio In the discussion part, it is reported that one of the weaknesses of portfolio stated by the students is some of their assignments probably missing during the semester so at the end of the semester, students will not have complete portfolio. To overcome this weaknesses; therefore, teachers need to provide folder or file manager for students to keep their work during the semester. Unless, teachers can ask students to provide their own folder and suggest them to keep all of their assignments well in that folder. 5.2.1.5 Creating clear scoring rubric for students’ portfolio In Chapter I, the researcher explains that portfolio is one of the alternative assessments. According to Hatfield, Edwards, and Bitter 1997, p.107 as cited in Lee, P. Y. 2006: 345, one of the characteristics of a good alternative asessment is it requires scoring rubrics. Since portfolio is one of the alternative assessments used in writing, in order to make portfolio assessment well- implemented, teachers need to provide clear scoring rubric to help them evaluate their students’ portfolio. A clear scoring rubric will help teachers assess their
