Students’ Opinion on the Use of Portfolio Assessment

48 respondents strongly disagreed. Table 4.1 revealed that 17,5 respondents did not have their portfolio complete at the end of the course while 82,5 respondents admit that they had complete portfolio at the end of the course. Then, in table 4.1 we can see that 12 of 80 respondents strongly agreed with statement ‘Writing portfolio makes me to be an active learner.” Fifty four of eighty respondents agreed, twelve respondents disagreed, and one respondent strongly disagreed. One respondent abstain. In table 4.1 we can also see that 82,5 respondents felt that writing portfolio makes them to be active learners and 16,25 respondents did not feel the same. The second last statement of close-ended question was “I am aware that portfolio is used as an assessment tool in writing class so that I put a big effort to create a good composition.” Table 4.1 showed 13 of 80 respondents strongly agreed, 57 of 80 respondents agreed, 9 of 80 respondents disagreed and 1 respondent abstain. It is depicted that 87,5 respondents were aware that portfolio is used as an assessment tool in writing class so they put big effort in creating good compositions, 11,25 respondents were not aware and 1,25 abstain. The last statement of close-ended question was “In writing portfolio, I am aware that I am responsible for my own progress in learning.” Table 4.1 showed us that 18 of 80 respondents strongly agreed with that statement and 57 of 80 respondents agreed but 5 of 80 respondents disagreed with that statement. It meant most of the respondents admitted that in writing portfolio, they were aware of their responsibility of their own learning progress. 49 The research result presentation about students’ opinion on the use of portfolio assessment does not stop here. The data presentation continues on the presentation of the result of the open-ended questions, especially number 27 and 28. Responding to first question “What do you think about the use of portfolio in writing class? Does it give benefits for you? Why and why not?”, Table 4.2 informed us that 97,5 of the respondents thought that portfolio was good to be implemented in writing class. No respondent thought that the implementation of portfolio assessment gave no benefit but 2 respondents 2,5 had confusing answer that the researcher could not analyze the answer. Respondents who thought that the implementation of portfolio assessment in writing class was good added portfolio was beneficial for them. It gave them so many benefits, for example portfolio helped them identify their mistakes in their composition and enabled them to learn from their own mistakes so that students could improve their writing skill. A respondent clearly stated “The use of portfolio in writing class is good. It gives benefits for me, because we can know our mistake in writing and then revise it so it will improve our writing skill, too.” Questionnaire, 2010 Then, about 72 respondents stated that some parts of the writing skill can be improved using portfolio for example grammar accuracy, minimum requirements, idea development, rhetorical steps, paragraphing, and drafting. Three respondents had confusing answer that could not be classified and analyzed and the rest 4 respondents had no idea about which parts of the writing skill can be improved using portfolios. 50 Table 4.2 The Result of the Open-Ended Questions Number 27-28 N o Question Result n Example of Respondents’ Answer 1 What do you think about the use of portfolio in writing class? 4.1.4 Portfolio Assessment Class Scenario

The implementation of portfolio assessment in writing class did have some benefits. However, it also had some weaknesses. In table 4.3 we can see the respondents also gave some suggestions for the implementation of portfolio assessment in writing class. Eleven respondents 13,75 had no suggestion for 51 the implementation of portfolio and said that portfolio assessment was already good and needed no changing or improving. A student said “I think the implementation of portfolio assessment is already good.” Questionnaire, 2010 Four respondents 6,25 added that teacher should use more portfolios in writing class. One of them said “To make a good writing class, I think the use of portfolio must be increased, so that the students can be a good writer.” Questionnaire, 2010 Five percent of the respondents had suggestion for the teacher to explain about the portfolio itself at the beginning of the course. Teacher should explain what portfolio is, what its function is, and what the students must do with it because students need to get clear description about what will they have and they do during the semester. Then, 30 respondents 37,5 suggested that their portfolio should be given more feedback and revision especially from their teacher so that they know the right correction of their mistakes. A respondent clearly stated “The grammatical mistakes and dictions in the writing should be corrected clearly by the teacher so students can understand well what mistake they have made.” Questionnaire, 2010 Three respondents or about 3,75 of the respondents even added that teacher should discuss students’ mistakes so that students can learn from their and others’ mistakes. Four respondents 5 suggested teacher to provide folder to keep students’ portfolio so that students would not lose one of their works or at least teacher could ask students to provide their own folder. Three respondents gave 52 suggestion that students should write more so that they can practice more. One of them wrote in the questionnaire “I think students need more tasks in portfolio to improve their writing skill.” Questionnaire, 2010 Three other students suggested using electronic portfolio E-portfolio. Thirteen other respondents had other suggestions, for example portfolio should be more interesting so students were not stressful, teacher should give the portfolio back to the students after their portfolio being assessed, etc. For the detail research result on the open-ended question number 29 will be depicted in table 4.3. Table 4.3 The Result of the Open-Ended Question Number 29 Question Result n Example of Respondents’ Answer What would you suggest changing or improving for the implemen tation of portfolio assess- ment in writing class to make the assess- ment effective No suggestion. It is already good. 11 13,75 I think it’s good enough, so there is no suggest on my mind. Use more portfolio 5 6,25 I think the use of portfolio must be increased, so that the students can be a good writer. Explanation about portfolio itself 4 5 First, the teacher should explain about portfolio what is it for? More feedback and correction revision 30 37,5 I suggest that feedback from teacher must be done and guide them. If there are some mistakes are found, teacher has to correct well where are the mistakes. Teacher discuss students’ mistakes 3 3,75 The teacher must give comment about our portfolio assignment and dicuss the mistake. Provides folder to keep students’ portfolio 4 5 Get in a folder. Put the date of every portfolio so, we can’t miss one of them. Write more 3 3,75 I think students have to be asked to write more, especially about what they are interested in. Use E-Portfolio 3 3,75 Using blog is good. Other answers 13 16,25 Students should help the others more seriously especially in correting their writing. Confusing answer 4 5 I need more practicing and reading.
