based on several different topics. It means that students practice to write in certain contexts. Sentence writing and passage writing are also considered to be grammar practice since the grammar or the structure of the writing is evaluated by the students and the teacher. The evaluation done by identifying whether their peers‟ sentences are grammatically correct or not and by providing suggestions of how the sentences should be. The three activities in ELTGallery facilitate the students to experience the grammar practices in a series of process, which are identifying, constructing, and evaluating. In addition, students may also revise their work after receiving comments from their peers or the teacher. It shows that autonomous and collaborative learning are really promoted through the use of web-based grammar practice in sentence writing class. Students‟ achievement is graded based on their results on grammar practices, sentence writing, and final writing. It is believed that grammar practices can enhance studen ts‟ writing ability.

F. Hypotheses

It is predicted that web-based grammar practiceare positively related to the grammatical competence and writing skill. It means that the correlation between them is positive one-tailed. As the first and second research problems are for the quantitative study, statistically, it was hypothesized that: 1. There is a positive correlation between web-based grammar practice and the grammatical competence of the 1 st English Letter students of Sanata Dharma University, which statistically is put into H : r 12 ≤ 0, H 1 : r 12 2. There is a positive correlation between web-based grammar practice and the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI writing skill of the 1 st English Letter students of Sanata Dharma University, which statistically is put into H : r 12 ≤ 0, H 1 : r 12 45 CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY This chapter provides description about how the study was conducted. It provides information about the research method, research design, research participants and setting, data gathering, and data analysis and verification.

A. Research Method

The research was designed based on the theory of mixed-method approach. The mixed-method approach was conducted in sequential explanatory strategy. This sequential explanatory strategy aimed at employing qualitative results to assist and support in explaining and interpreting the results of predominantly quantitative study Creswell 2003. The major focus of the mixed-method approach was quantitative study, while qualitative study was set as the supporting study Creswell 2003. The quantitative study, which was employed using correlational research, was conducted to answer the first and the second research questions. Correlational research is a research that investigates the correlation or the relationship between variables. In this study, the correlational research conducted was between web- based grammar practice and grammatical competence and between web-based grammar practice and writing achievement. Since the data are numerical, the data analysis was conducted using Statistical Product and Service Solution SPSS 21. The technique that was employed was Pearson Product Moment Test that was preceded by Spearman Rank-Order Correlation Coefficient Test to validate the findings. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI To support the quantitative research, qualitative research was also conducted through the use of interview. The qualitative method was employed to provide supporting data for the quantitative data. The interviews employed were in-depth interview, in which the interviews were done as many as needed Bismoko 2013. The in-depth interviews enabled the researcher to show what could not be explored and elaborated by quantitative research result. Therefore, this study employed quantitative research using correlational research followed by qualitative research using in-depth interview. The result of qualitative researchwas used as additional information for the quantitative data. In-depth interview was chosen as it could dig out more elaborative explanation about the implementation of the web-based grammar practice in ELTGallery and their contributions, functions and influences to students‟ grammatical competence and writing skill. The questions in the in-depth interview explored students‟ personal experience in conducting the web-based grammar practice. It meant that the students explained more about which aspects of web-based grammar practice that developed their grammatical competence and writing skill. It also elaborated how they conducted the web-based grammar practice and how they made use of those practices to develop their grammatical competence and writing skill. In fact, the result of the interview also revealed the real implementation and contribution of web-based grammar practice to their writing skill. Therefore, whether the result of SPSS showed positive or negative correlation, the result of the interview expressed the real use of ELTGallery by the students. By employing quantitative research using correlational research and qualitative research using in-depth interview, the findings of the study were expected to be valid and reliable.
