1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study

The era of twenty-one century, Indonesia is very smart reporter. Many reporters who love to prove the truth of events such as the cases of prostitution is widespread in cyberspace, and the initials of the artist involved prostitution opened publicly on television. then simply the police and reporters cooperated in the investigation so that the perpetrators of the prostitution case that turned out to be a mastermind of prostitution in an attempt to catch hold in the Office and in the police force. Therefore, we should be proud of the reporter. Because of the courage of the reporter in Indonesia cases in Indonesia such as: sexual harassment and corruption, continue to be investigated and known truth. The thing, that is uncovering the truth from the hard work of reporter, makes a profit for the Government and the public in assessing a problem. In the event the same as prostitution in explain above, there are similarities in the novel the first phone call from heaven. Where a reporter named Sully proves that a call from heaven in the novel is told in the engineering of a man named Horace.

"The First Phone Call from Heaven" tells the story of a town named Coldwater, which got the issue of the four men found the call from heaven. Four such person is Tess, Kathrine, Jack, and Elias, who claimed to get a call from heaven namely from those closest to them. The phone rings every Friday and the phone always no ID number. Coldwater became a city that many tourists visit. Many foreigners who come to Coldwater and believe it will be a miracle of God. The popularity of the issue a call from heaven to make children believe in me-too

(14)

Sully the reporter to the four people who got the phone a very bustling haven of talk about it, because the sense of love to his son Sully ,Sully searching evidence that phone heaven was real. Sully very do not believe anymore in the local newspapers, the local library, the mobile phones used by those who got a call from heaven. With the persistence of Sully to seek the truth which he just engineering, though Sully had time to go to prison because of dropping the jet flown by him, because maybe many people argued badly about himself. But Sully wasn't afraid with the waffle man. all the time, he was busy chasing Elwood, Mary, Elias, News-obituaries, all of that obsession to prove the falsehood of all miracles. Since Sully finds that lively discussed miracles are merely fabrications from Horace, Coldwater back into normal as before the city got the miracle.

The writer is interested in discussing the novel because the novel has elements of prose that makes the reader to imagine it, then the novel also form a writer and reader's imagination growing in every paragraph, while Poems have only a limited and paragraph only makes up some line only. Then if the writer chose the poem, he must truly understand the meaning of every word. And the main reason why the writer chose The novel The First Phone Call From Heaven because the writer is interested in the character Sully, who has more concern towards the city of Coldwater and thanks to Sully the miracle in Coldwater was not discussed again in New York.

Kennedy (1991 : 203 ) says that novel is a book- lenght story in prose, whose author tries to create senses while we read, we experience actual life. The novel is a picture of real life and manner time when it was written . Some of them

(15)

are fiction (unreal) and some of notification (real). In notification novel, the author’s present actual people and events. In fiction, the readers can know more about the character. By this description, the readers will know about characters are categorized as a main character and peripheral characters.

The elements of prose are theme, character, setting, plot, point of view, symbols and language. But the analysis used only three elements of prose that is the plot, characters, and settings that are able to prove the ability how Sully successfully investigate the isue someone tough. the writer uses the method (Libranry Reseach) that collect data from books in the library and also get information from the internet. Then the writer also uses the intrinsic approach and analyze the way of the story. Wallek and Warren that is the approach taken the data from the text itself.

1.2 The Problem of Study The problems are :

1) What is Sully’s opinion about a phone call from heaven ? 2) How does Sully prove the untruth the phone call from heaven ? 1.3 The Scope of Study

There are many aspects can be discussed in this novel, however, the writer is intersted to focus on analyzing the main character sully, a reporter, makes effort to prove the untruth of in novel the first phone call from heaven.

(16)

1.4 The Objective of Study The objective of study are :

1) To explain what is Sully’s opinion about a phone call from heaven. 2) To find out how does Sully prove the untruth the phone call from heaven. 1.5 The Significane of Study

Significane of study are :

1) General, benefit from this learning process. The writer wants the reader better understand the content of the novel, passing three elements of plot, character, and setting of the story can be chosen to bring more in.

2) In particular, the writers hope readers gain learning and understand why the writer chose the topic of a novel, without having to read the original novel from the first part until the end.

1.6 The Methode of Study

The writer makes use of the two methods in the writing of the paper work, the first a Library research and the second Intrinsic approach.Library research is to collect data to study the books in the library which is the result of previous researchers. While Instrinsic approach is an element that compose a literary work that embodies the structure of a literary work, such as: theme, character and characterization, plot and pengaluran, background and grounds, and the center of narration. Of the two methods used, after the writer understand and gather data that was already understood, sorted, and summarized from Opera-obtained about the novel. The writer makes the selection of the data collected to be presented in this paper.

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1. Novel

Eagleton (1983:1) says, “There have been various attempts to be define literature. You can define it, as “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction-writing which is not really true. But even the briefest reflection on what people commonly include under the heading of literature suggests that this will do.” Literature as imaginative writing plot is reflected from people thought, that is not true. Types of literature in the fiction genre include the novel, short story, and novella.

Novel is one form of a literary work which is the story fiction in form of writings or words and had instances of instrinsik and extrinsic. In a novel author make a a bouquet having a groove broader and clearly and containing the urethane story someone and people around him with accentuating dispositive deeper and setting being diverse. Hence can be concluded that novel is a fictitious tales that seeks describing or delineating life the characters by using grooves. Fictional story not only as mere fantasy, but an imagination that is produced by the author is reality or phenomenon that is seen and perceived. Edgar. V Robert and Henry E. Jacob in their literary books: An Introduction to Reading and Writing (1995;49) says that they are some aspects of fiction (novel) from french and Italy to discribe about, there are : character (the people that goes along in the story), plot ( the development and the organization of stories), structure (the way a plot is assembled), theme (the meaning and the whole idea of the story), point of view ( the position or stance of the narrator), and style (the words that tells the story).

(18)

The word “novel” comes from the Italian, Novella, which means the new staff that small. The novel was originally developed in the region from other forms or narrative nonfiction, such as letters, biographies, and history. But with a shift in society and development time, the novel is not only based on data nonfiction, author of novel can change according to the desired imagination.

From the statement, Novel, that gives you imaginative, is a fictional long prose work that adopted from french and Italy to describe about the element prose.

2.2 Plot

Plot is a literary term defined as the events that make up a story, particularly as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story, or simply by coincidence. A plot "insures that you get your character from point A to point Z". Plot according to Roberts and Jacobs in their book literature (1995;88) said that plot is all the actions or incidents, speeches, thoughts, and observations are linked together to make up an entirety, sometimes called an organic unity. The essence of this unity is the development and resolution of a conflict in hich protagonist, or central character. The plot is interactions of causes and effects as they develop sequentially or chronologically. Plot is stories are made up mostly of actions or incidents that follow each other sequentially. Finding a sequential or narrative order, however, is only the first step toward the more important consideration. The plot is the controls governing the development of the actions. In a well- plotted story , things precede or follow each other not simply because time ticks away, but more importantly because effects follow causes.

(19)

Plot is known as the foundation of a novel or story which the characters and settings are built around. It is meant to organize information and events in a logical manner. When writing the plot of a piece of literature, the author has to be careful that it does not dominate the other parts of the story.

There are five main elements in a plot. The first is the exposition or the introduction. This is known as the beginning of the story where characters and setting are established. The conflict or main problem is introduced as well. The second element of a plot is known as the rising action which occurs when a series of events build up to the conflict. The main characters are established by the time the rising action of a plot occurs and at the same time, events begin to get complicated. It is during this part of a story that excitement, tension or crisis is encountered. The third element of a plot is known as the climax or the main point of the plot. This is the turning point of the story and is meant to be the moment of highest interest and emotion. The reader wonders what is going to happen next. The fourth element of a plot is known as falling action or the winding up of the story. Events and complications begin to resolve and the result of actions of the main characters are put forward. The last element of a plot is the resolution or the conclusion. It is the end of a story and ends with either a happy or a tragic ending.

From the above statement, plot is the parts that the conflict raising is climax in a story, but this paper explained that the plot has mixed time. The novel story in future time , then flashback and repeat again until finally the plot finished in climax.

(20)

2.3 Character

Character is a person who is responsible for the thoughts and action within a story, poem, or other literature. Characters are extremely important because they are the medium through which a reader interacts with a piece of literature. Every character has his or her own personality, which a creative author uses to assist in forming the plot of a story or creating a mood. The different attitudes, mannerisms, and even appearances of characters can greatly influence the other major elements in a literary work, such as theme, setting, and tone. With this understanding of the character, a reader can become more aware of other aspect of literature, such as symbolism, giving the reader a more complete understanding of the work.

Roberts and Jacobs (1995;51) said that character is natural facsimile from the human with all good and bad characteristics. A story is usually related to big conflict of the character. It probable to involve interaction with another character in complicated situation, or with idea or ordinary condition. The character may win, lose,or relevant. He or she can learn and become better for experience or maybe lose point and no change.

Abram (1981:76) says that character is people who are appeared in a narrative prose or novel and it is interpreted by the readers as a person who has moral quality and certain tendency such as being expressed in what they say and what they do.

E.M. Foster (1927) says, “There are two basic types of characters “round character” and “flat character.”

(21)

Round character is a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Round characters tend to be more fully developed and described than flat, or static, characters. If you think of the characters you most love in fiction, they probably seem as real to you as people you know in real life. This is a good sign that they are round characters. A writer employs a number of tools or elements to develop a character, making him or her round, including description and dialogue.

Flat character is a minor character in a work of fiction who does not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story. Also referred to as "two-dimensional characters" or "static characters," flat characters play a supporting role to the main character, which as a rule should be round. Though we don't generally strive to write flat characters, they are often necessary in a story, along with round characters.

From the statement, Character is a person who is responsible for the thoughts and action within a story. And he or she can learn and become better for experience or maybe lose point and no change.

2.4 Setting

Roberts and Jacobs (1987: 230) says that the setting is the natural, manufactured, political, and temporal environment, including everything that characters know and own. Setting is divided into three types : natural and outdoors, the object of human manufacture and construction , and cultural condition and assumptions. Background / setting is something or state of being gone over the offender in a story. Make trouble background, namely: (1) a place,

(22)

is a wherein the offender was or story occurring (in school in the city in the room etc.), (2) a time,is when that story occurring (morning, afternoon, night, yesterday, etc), (3) theatmosphere, is in a state where the story going on. (sad, excited, cold, peace, desolate etc.). Background formed of some respects, namely: (1) the geographical. The setting provides the historical an cultural context for characters. It often can symbolize the emotional state of characters. Stories actually have two types of setting: Physical and Chronological. The Physical setting is of course where the story takes place. Likewise, the chronological setting, the “when” can be equally general or specific.

From the above statement, Setting is including everything that characters know and own. And three types that is divided natural and outdoors, the object of human manufacture and construction , and cultural condition and assumptions. 2.5 Intrinsic Approach

Wallek and Warren (1977:75) says that the approach is based on the intrinsic structural point of text and literature. This means the intrinsic approach emphasizes the intertext analysis by describing the elements of prose that described previously. The study of literature with intrinsic approach usually concern with the content and the form of the works itself. According to Rene Wellek (1997: 158) many novel studies not only see the relations of literature with the social structure, but also study of the artistic, perspective or point of view and narrative techniques. The basic elements to analyzing literary works are theme, point of view, plot, character, characterization, dramatic, conflict.

(23)

These elements will help the student in analyzing literary works based on intrinsic approach.

Furthermore Wallek and Warren says, one approach is to find the purpose and theory of the artist creator. A more useful is based on the comparison of work of art, social and cultural background the same, can unravel the background of time , place setting, and social background art and literature.

Furtthemore, it Wallek and Warren said that the golden age of literature in the days of Elizabeth is not matched by progress in the field of fine arts. The various branches of art which Platis art, literature, music has the evolution of each with a different tempo and it has elements of different structures.

From the statement that approach of interpretation and analysis of the work itself. Performed with several stages of the process in order to get a perfect result, among others, describe, criticize, analyze and interpret the situation occurring in the present.

2.6 Phone Syndicate

Phone is An instrument that converts voice and other sound signals into a form that can be transmitted to remote locations and that receives and reconverts waves into sound signals. A mobile phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to make calls and send text messages, among other features. The earliest generation of mobile phones could only make and receive calls. Today’s mobile phones, however, are packed with many additional features, such as Web browsers, games, cameras, video players and even navigational systems. A mobile phone may also be known as a cellular phone or simply cellphone.

(24)

When the first mobile phones were introduced, their only function was to make calls, and they were so bulky it was impossible to carry them in a pocket. Later, mobile phones belonging to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network were capable of sending and receiving text messages. As these devices evolved, they became smaller and more features were added, such as multimedia messaging service (MMS), which allowed users to send and receive images. Most of these MMS-capable devices were naturally equipped with cameras, which allowed users to capture photos with the built-in camera, add captions, and send them to friends and relatives who also had MMS-capable phones. A mobile phone with highly advanced features is called a smartphone, while a regular mobile phone is known as a feature phone. A mobile phone typically operates on a cellular network, which is composed of cell sites scattered throughout cities, countrysides, and even mountainous regions. If a user happens to be located in an area where there is no signal from any cell site belonging to the cellular network provider he or she is subscribed to, calls cannot be placed or received in that location.

Syndicate is an outstanding, incredibly atmospheric action-strategy game by Bullfrog, one of the best of its kind. The game is set in a bleak future where "Syndicates" control the world. You're a young executive in a small European based syndicate, you must perform a series of tasks to subdue the major population centres one by one until you have driven the forces of the rival corporations out of their final strongholds.

(25)

Mariam said that phone syndicate is to sell (something, such as a piece of writing, comic strip, or photograph) to many different newspapers or magazines for publication at the same time. Syndicate is group of people or business companies combined to pursue a commoninterest. And publish an article in many different newspapers or magazines by making it available to a central organization that distributes it. His column is syndicated throughout the world. Although there are many legal syndicates formed around the world, the usage of the term "the syndicate" in colloquial English often refers to one involved in illegal activities. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines syndicate as a group of people or businesses that work together. This may be a council or body or association of people or an association of concerns, officially authorized to undertake a duty or negotiate business with an office or jurisdiction. It may mean an association of racketeers in organized crime.

From the statement, Phone Syndicate is group of people or business companies combined to pursue a commoninterest and His column is syndicated throughout the world.

Sullivan Harding is a man of tall stature, like wearing a hat Ski, jacket Suedeusang, and boots. Sully was living in an apartment, Sully can see the beauty and comfort of the rooms on the 2nd floor which was heated furnace radiator. When Sully gets time to rest from his job as a pilot of the plane, Sully spent much time in the apartment of his place of residence, because Sully can see the beauty of the pine trees that leads to the river and the sound of the little water that flows in the river. Sully who loves the cold, the way Sully runs very slowly, and always bowed his head. Because when Sully is running there is a sense of trust in himself which makes Sully always looked down. (27)

Sully flew jet aircraft, but destiny said to another. The aircraft flown by Sully fell, when he wanted to land atthe town of Coldwater. When his wife heard the news, his wife wanted to see it. But Sully must work to finance her life along with Jules, however ; when Sully applying for work everywhere, no one will accept it because the ex-convict, but Sully Sully suddenly met with a very good high school as friends because his friend offered him work in Northern Michigan, the Gazetteoriginally Sully doesn't want to work inside the Gazette since Sully does not want to connect with companies that have mempermalukannya in the city of Coldwater. Because the Gazette is a small company that contains a wide range of news in the newspaper. His friend know that Sully was actually forced to work in his company, because it was a friend of his gave Sully the work field Reporter, to find news and provide information to the residents of the city of Coldwater.

(29)

“He caught his reflection in the mirror mussed hair, blood-shot eyes, jwaline coated with stubble. He had spent another week searching for work in the nearby towns of Moss Hill and Dunmore. People were not encouraging.” (the first phone call from heaven ; pg. 35)

The analysis of this section later, Sullivan Harding was a member of the air force Yes having a life in harmony with his wife and son, everything changed after Sully dropped the jet in the steer to return from duty and returned to Coldwater, this opportunity was also used to Sully met his wife Giselle. Air crash makes Sully should be in jail because the accused was negligent, then a life lived only Sully jailed for ten months and accept the fact that the wife who Sully love died after a coma a few months. Out of prison, Sully tried to learn as a newspaper reporter, the work was given by a friend. But friend Sully know that Sully did not want to work in the Gazetta because it relates to newspapers.

3.2 Finding to Untruth

Sully has been out of prison and now Sully work became a reporter at the newspaper, Sully fair calm because of the income. Sully can finance the necessary needs of the children, they live in an apartment. Since Sully didn't want to hassle her parents who are old, which for nurturing her son jailed Sully. Sully, who works in the Gazette as a reporter, saw the news on television about the Coldwater news got a call from heaven, because this news very interesting about he said, because his son join the trust on the news. Sully promised wanted to prove the truth. This really became the first task for him as a reporter, coupled with a sense of no confidence and form a very deep love for his son. Because his son Jules believe will call from heaven. Heavy blow for Sully because her son asked her if

(30)

her mother will also call as those who got a call from heaven. The sadness felt determined to make that Sully is powerful enough to do a search if true call from heaven right or just engineering.

“Still, here in Coldwater, people are wondering if they might be the next to get a phone call from heaven. “ you gotta be kidding me,” Sully mumbled.(the first phone call from heaven ; pg. 48)

Sully as a reporter, with a very strong enthusiast looking for the truth about a call from heaven. Sully prepare all needed equipment needs as a reporter, namely book journalist, and recording tool. And find out the sources associated with the call from heaven. In terms of its search Sully hide it from other reporters, because if another reporter found out about her suspicions, would ruin the plans that have been drawn up Sully in such a way to catch the perpetrators who made the call from heaven. As a reporter who first performed by Sully to visit a public library Coldwater, since all events that are in the city of Coldwater definitely has a definite historical archive was placed in the library area. After visiting the library Sully did find results related to a phone call from paradise in the city of Coldwater, there's no event like it was earlier in the city of Coldwater. Sully just to find the history of the phone was first made by Allexander Bell, that it used to be when making his first phone allexander Bell comes from the broken bones of the dead, then Sully also read in the library that the sound recording device could save the former voice of the dead.

“He was heading to the coldwater public library, a single story white brick building with an American flag by the front entrance and a swinging sign the featured a different message each week.” (the first phone call from heaven; pg.107).

(31)

Sully had a sneaking suspicion he would second that is the phone used by four men who received a call from heaven, after Sully do about mobile phone use by four recipients of the phone found there is similarity Sully prepaid phone being used by them. Sully then ask for Jason who are experts in field of IT helped him to do more about the similarities in the prepaid phone being used by them. In fact Jason was reluctant to help Sully because Jason felt it will be wasting her time just to work, but the sense of trust that is the same as Sully, Jason helped Sully to do about mobile phones that use prepaid the same.

“Probably. It might take a few minutes.” Jason started to type, then stopped and leaned back. “I can get in major crap for showing you this.” “I kind a figured,” Sully said. Jason drummed his fingers on his knees. “Ah ,what the hell . Let’s do it .” He grinned. “I hate this job anyhow.” (the first phone call from heaven; pg.147)

Sully did not succeed against its search, against existing dipikirannya analysis was not performed the results of truth, While the city of Coldwater that time met by crowds of tourists, the hotels in the town of Coldwater is full, the streets become bogged down, and police officers stand guard on all fronts so as not to riot in the city of Coldwater. With fully of curious after searches that Sully did not yet succeeded. Sully came to the funeral somehow Sully had a hunch that there will be a way for the search in the cemetery later above all suspicion. Sully came to the cemetery, there is visible adjacent to the sitting room Mary Horace. Room registration at Coldwater, there are only two spaces. The first room is the second room Maria and Horace. Sully entered the room registration funeral and went to Maria, Maria explains if Sully would like to meet with Horace, Horace does not work every Friday. In the two months since Horace worked in the

(32)

cemetery of Horace never entered every Friday, every Mary asks the reason Horace had no particular reason to answer it, Sully who heard the news from Mary had a very strong suspicion to Horace. Sully asks Mary provide archives of the dead related to the four men who got the call of heaven. Maria gave the archive to him and says to Sully, that Horace very acquainted with Sully, Mary says that Horace knows Sully in the past, the times Sully is imprisoned, and when the wife Sully died. Maria asked Sully did you have relatives. Sully is very surprised by the question because Sully altogether ignorant of Horace. Sully suspicions growing, Sully asks liz to find the address of a library officer Horace. Sully then get the address and hurried towards home address Horace provided by liz.

“I need an address. He tried to catch his breath. Have to find out, where Horace lives.” “who’s Horace”, “ from the funeral home.”, “ ok,ok,” she said, moving to the computer. (the first phone call from heaven ; pg. 264)

Sully rushing carries his car after knowing the address of Horace, though it snowed and it should not allow Sully to that folder, but does not shake the spirit of Sully to prove that a call from heaven who becomes a miracle in the town of Coldwater is engineering. For this is the guidance of Sully in its quest for this. With a very great doubts, because if this is indeed the manner of Horace. Sully will be puzzled what to do since Sully doesn't bring anyone there, own Sully stepped in Horace to prove all she bargained for. Once it gets to the home of Horace, Sully secretly entered because Sully fear Horace saw it. The increasingly thick snow and cold that Sully felt made him exhaling three balls and his knee

(33)

seemed to lift a very heavy barbells. But without a doubt Sully enters a very dark home of Horace, fortunately Sully carries a flashlight to illuminate the way. When Sully entered in Horace, Sully saw lots of cables, batteries scroll by and scattered. The equipment is piled up on the shelves, but does not seem to be enabled again. Very messy and fairly old Sully House surrounds Horace, then a voice called him and it turns out it was Horace. Sully feels this is a trap of Horace. Sully, looking weapon, props just in case if there is something with him. Horace called her and took her to the basement, upon entering the basement, Sully is staring at that there are sophisticated technology before him. A very wide screen with multiple monitors showing the State of the city of Coldwater-filled crowd. Some keyboard and electronic box lunches, then Horace squeeze one button and the display shows Katherine weeping got a call from his brother who was dead. Votes loud sounds from Katherine screens and loudspeakers in the basement, making Sully was surprised. Sully saw Horace see list on a screen and Horace looks very happy when looking at its screen.

“Stop it!! Horace seemed taken aback. I’m not doing anything to anyone. You are!it’s terrible! Really? He motioned toward the screens. It doesn’t look terrible. This is insanity, Sully whispered. It’s huge lie, Heaven? are you sure about that? You’re giving them false hope.”(the first phone call from heaven; pg. 284-285)

Sully very angry, because what has been heard by residents in the town of Coldwater from Katherine phone everything is engineered from Horace. Sully seemed to want to kill Horace but Sully was not able to see the body very thin Horace. Since Sully strongly feel lied to by Horace, Sully destroy all the equipment. Sully asks Horace why he did this, Horace answered him with ease.

(34)

Because of you, Sully very wonder why these events are associated with it. What connects them with the happenings in the city of Coldwater. Horace tells Sully to read archives that exist in the cemetery that is associated with it. After informing it, Horace disappeared and her house dark, Sully whose heart the heat out of the House by walking slowly because Horace dead lights and go straight, at the Sully car reading the archives taken from the cemetery, and think of the words said by Horace. If the archive read, Sully would know the reason, Sully read the archive slowly and eventually Sully get a reason from the archives turns out Horace is Elliot Gray, which makes Sully to lose everything. Sully felt devastation second time, Sully rushed like to told to everyone in the city of Coldwater, Sully tells Jason by phone. But just tell the little that the alleged existence of this true for Sully.

“Why did you do it?, to make the world believe. Why does that matter?, if it believes, it behaves better. What’s in that for you? Penance, sometimes you sit in a cell and don’t deserve it, Mr. Harding.” (the first phone call from heaven ; pg. 287)

When Sully is still on the way which is very close to the home of Horace, Sully saw the police car leading to the home of Horace. Sully confused they know where, if Horace was the one who did it. Sully ignored it because Sully want to soon meet with his son and told me everything, but the shadow of his wife Giselle continued to think about it. The shadow seems to say don't tell everything to Jules, who initially wanted to Sully determined told Jules now lost, because the words of Horace and the shadow of Giselle. Horace tells her that Sully won't be able to say anything to anyone when Sully know the reason. Police Chief Jack located in the

(35)

home of Horace, found that Horace had died, and Jack also found a letter addressed to Sully. Jack took the letter and did not tell anyone because Jack didn't want to prolong the problem. After taking the letter and go. Police Chief Jack Sully to call and tell that there is a letter that placed him on Horace. Jack also told Sully that Horace was dead. The next day the Sully police station came to to meet with police Chief Jack and take his letter. Jack said to Sully, Jack did not want to prolong this issue. Because it's better reading at home only Sully. When it came to their House, Sully read made by Horace, and understand why Horace did that. Sully forgive Horace and start a new life, after the events of terbongkarnya. Sully feels relieved and can sleep soundly again. And the city of Coldwater back into town and as usual and normal after proofs done by Sully.

“It was computers. Software. The dead people left phone messages that were used to re-create their voices. It was a fake the whole time. You have to tell them. Who did it?”(the first phone call from heaven ; pg.291)

This is the analysis of subab, Sully a reporter trying to prove a miracle phone call from Paradise City's horrendous Coldwater is just engineering. How to prove the truth of Sully, 1. Sully visited public library Coldwater, 2. Sully suspected mobile phone used by the four people who got a call that heaven, 3. Sully came to the funeral. From the search conducted that prove cemetery Sully truth sought by him, that the existence of a call from heaven is simply the engineering of the men who worked in a funeral for two months named Horace. After he investigated everything, Sully knowing that a call from heaven associated with her past. Horace who did the engineering, because it forms a request maafnya to Sully in the past.

(36)

4. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 4.1 Conclusion

Sully ,a reporter, cares about the environment of the city of Coldwater, especially against a call from heaven that affect most of the population. Sully is able to prove the truth of the phone from the heaven. And as a reporter Sully prepare required, when searching for the truth. With the help of colleague Sully helped to search for any suspicion that he is thinking.

Sully is a member of the air force who has a good personality, and has very little family harmony. ordered by the range to fly jets that mandate will be flown to Coldwater, however when Sully flew aircraft that will take off, all of a sudden the plane crashed. Since the events of Sully's life changed. Sully to lose a very loved wife, and Sully must be removed from the members of the air force since Sully declared negligent in carrying out its tasks. Sully who has been jailed for ten months now has been free, his life very changed. Sully feels his freedom was like staring at a dark future. But he has a friend who is very caring towards and attened Sully to work in the “Gazetta”, a news office reporter and looking for news. Though Sully did not like the work, but Sully very grateful towards his friend at least the job can finance his life and his son.

Sully's new two-day become a reporter, had gotten a very news will not go to his opinion. Although it does not make sense, but as a reporter Sully must seek the truth. Some of the searches that analysis does not bring results. But the last search makes Sully so shocked, that the perpetrators of a call from heaven is Horace. Horace is the officer's funeral, the registration of all the results that Sully

(37)

get Horace did this. Because the form of apology to him, initially does not understand after reading the archives of Sully knowing that Horace is Elliot Gray, which makes her job loss as a member of the air force.

(44)

THE LETTER FROM HORACE TO SULLY Dear Mr. Harding,

I beg your forgiveness.

My real name,as you now likely know,is Elliot Gray. I am the father of Elliot Gray Jr., my only child, with whom you are also tragically familiar.

On the day of your plane crash,it was I who destroyed the flight recordings at Lynton Airfield,a relatively simple task for someone with my background.

I did so in a foolish attempt to protect my son.

We had been estranged for many years. His mother died young, and he did not approve of my occupation. In hindsight,I cannot blame him.It was clandestine, deceitful work that often took me away for long periods of time.I did it in the name of country and government, two things that mean surprisingly little to me as I write this.

That morning, because he refused to take my calls,I arrived unannounced at Elliot’s home. I had come to settle affairs with him.I was sixty-eight years old, and had been diagnosed with an incurable cancer. It was time to resolve our differences.

(45)

Unfortunately,Elliot did not receive me well.We argued. It is a father’s naive belief that he can always make things right in the end. I could not. Instead, he rushed out agitated and angry. An hour later,he gave you the wrong clearance.

On such moments do lives turn.

I believe it was my presence that put him in a distracted state.I knew my son. He had his weaknesses. But his work, like mine, was impeccable. I had driven to the tower to hand him a letter that contained my final wishes. I could have left it at his home, but I suppose, deep down, I wanted to see him once more. I arrived in time to hear the faraway sound of your jet crashing.

There are no words to descri be that moment. My training prepares me for controlled behavior in chaotic situations. But I’m afraid my son panicked. I found him alone in the tower’s control booth, yelling,“What did I do? What did I do?” I told him to lock the door and let me handle things as I moved quickly to erase all data—thinking, like an operative, that with no flight recordings,he could not be proven at fault.

For some reason,as I did this,he fled the facility. To this day I do not know why. That’s the thing when people leave us too suddenly, isn’t it? We always have so many questions.

In the confusion that followed,I left the tower undetected, another thing I am trained to do.But after learning of Elliot’s car crash, his death, and your wife being left in such terribly fragile condition,I was consumed with regret.I come

(46)

from a world of checks and balances. My son,I am responsible for. You and your wife were strangers, crossfire victims.I became desperate to make amends.

A few days later,at Elliot’s funeral,I witnessed friends I didn’t know he had. They spoke lovingly about his belief in a better world after this one. They said he trusted in the grace of heaven. I never knew he felt that way.

For the first time in my life,I wept for my child.

I came to Col dwater to settle my debts—to him and to you. With access to your military records,I was able to study your background.I tracked your return here, how you’d moved your son in with your parents as you dutifully visited your wife in the hospital. When I learned of the charges you faced,I felt grave concern, knowing no evidence would be found to defend your actions. The ongoing case meant Elliot’s death was constantly in the news.My conscience found no rest.

I have always been a man of action,Mr.Harding. Knowing my life was drawing to a close,I purchased a nearby home, took on a new identity (again,a simple matter with my government background),and,by fortuitous accident, met Sam Davidson, who was hoping to retire from his life’s work at the funeral home. As you approach death, its mystery takes on a mournful appeal.I bought an interest in his business, and discovered that the grieving of others gave me comfort.I listened to their stories. Listened to their regrets. Nearly all of them had a single desire—the same desire,I suppose, that led me to the airfield that day: to speak with their loved ones at least once more.

(47)

I decided, for a handful of them, to make it so. To make my last act one of empathy, and perhaps give you and your son something hopeful after your wife’s passing. The rest—how I did it,the eight voices, the timing, the details—I am fairly sure you will have figured out by this point. Do not count on discovering much evidence. My former employers will cover any important tracks. When you do what I did for so long, you are never truly retired; as my identity could be an embarrassment to them, they will reduce my significance and ensure I remain mostly a mystery. But I am sharing this with you, Mr. Harding, because to you I can never repay my debt. You may think someone with my background would have no belief in God. That would be inaccurate. It was with fierce belief in God’s support that I justi fied my actions all those years.

I did what I did in Coldwater as penance. I will die,as all of us do,without knowing the outcome of my works. But even if my methods are revealed, people will believe what they choose to believe. And if a few more souls have come to faith because of these calls, perhaps the Lord will show megrace.

Either way,by the time you read this, the mystery of heaven will besolved for me. If I could truly contact you and tell you of its existence,I would. That would be the smallest of debts I could repay.

Instead,I end this as I began it,asking your forgiveness.Perhaps, soon, I will be able to seek the same from my son.

In the confusion that followed,I left the tower undetected, another thing I am trained to do.But after learning of Elliot’s car crash, his death, and your wife being left in such terribly fragile condition,I was consumed with regret.I come

from a world of checks and balances.
