THE SYNOPSIS OF “THE NAMESAKE” FILM

“The namesake” film tells about a spouse Ashima Ganguli and her husband

Ashoke Ganguli. They were Indian. They had an arranged married. After they had an

arranged married they moved to America. Ashoke worked in America as a lecturer.

So, Ashima moved to America. There, she faced many cultural differences between

America and India. Because of those differences, Ashima faced the cultural

problems. She had long-suffering adaptation to life in America. She lived as

immigrants in America; she should adapt to the environment. After they lived in

America, Ashima was pregnant and she wanted to give birth in the hospital. In

keeping with the family tradition of India, giving the name of the child will be given

by the grandmother of the mother, so they do not need to look for a name for their

child. But until the birth of the baby, a letter from India which contains the name did

not arrive. Ashoke and Ashima was panic when they would bring the baby home

from the hospital because the hospital’s system in America required that every

newborn to make the birth certificate and it needed a name, while Ashoke and

Ashima determined to give their child a name with the name of a gift from India. In

the mi

dst of the panic that emerged the name "Gogol" came from the Ashoke’s idea.

It is a name which is unusual for Bengali families. The tragical story of Ashoke is

when He was 22-year-old in India that inspired him to give name Gogol for the baby.

Young Ashoke wherever he goes always bring a book, a day when Ashoke on his

way to his grandfather's house by train, He got an accidents, fortunately Ashoke was

reading a novel when the accident occurred and among the victim of accident,

rescuers found Ashoke. He was waving tear books. Nikoli Gogol is the author of the

book. At first Gogol still felt comfortable with the name gave by his father, until

when Gogol started growing up he felt something wrong with his name. It made him

hate the name Gogol. He asked his father why he did not give a name to the names of

India or America generally. In the school, Gogol knew the tragic life story of Nikoli

Gogol, who died young because of psychiatric illness. Various events were as the

rainbow which was coloring the life of this little family until the birth of their second

child, Sonia. Ashoke career progression as Lecturer requiring them to move out of

the city of Cambridge to Boston, while Ashima stay at home as a housewife who took

care of the household while teach the Indian culture to their children. Ashima still

wore a sari as everyday clothes, still performed religious rituals and she always

cooked for her family. Like two sides of a coin, Gogol lived his own life, he spent

childhood, adolescents and adults as young Americans in general, more felt pleasure

from playing white disc album of The Beatles than music from Bengali dish, drank

alcohol, and smoked. Gogol felt uncomfortable when other people knew that he was

Indian. He tried to hide that he was India by changing his name from Gogol to be

Nikhil, he had a girlfriend. She was American and he rarely visited his parents. But

all did not happen in long time; after Gogol’s father died Gogol became aware about

his mistake. He found out the real story behind the name Gogol. Finally, to mitigate

his guilt to his father and mother, Gogol wanted to have an arranged married to the

women from India to be his wife. But after some months they had divorce because

Gogol knew his wife had love affair with another man. But all suffer that Gogol

faced made him aware that other people knew that he was Indian is not a problem.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In chapter I the writer would like to present such topic as: background of study, statement of the problems, purposes of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation and the definition of key terms. Each section is presented as follows.

1.1. Background of the Study

According to Koesnosoebroto (1988:1) literature is a kind of extension and application of certain properties of language. It means that literature has a relationship with language. Literature is a verbal work of art and language is the material substance of the work. By learning literature people gain many advantages. First, people will get the lesson about life because they will feel what is reflected by the author and they can take the messages to make their life better. Second, by learning the literature people will enrich their knowledge. Third, by learning literature people will get enjoyment because literature used the beautiful language.

In addition, Connolly (in Koesnosoebroto, 1988:2) said that there are two kinds of literature. First is the literature of knowledge. It presents or interprets facts, ideas or happenings such as a description of a place or a person, the

explanation of scientific process or the discussion of a political issue. Second is literature of imagination. It interprets experience by fictions presentation of person, ideas, or events.

Drama is one of literature. Macmillan (1984:693) stated that drama is a play that consists of stories to be performed for an audience. Drama usually provides dialogue and stage directions that give instruction about scenery, costumes, gestures, movements and lighting. Drama develops every period. One of the development drama which have influence to the public interest is film (Schmidt, Bogarad, and Crockett, 2006).

Film is a play presented by actors or actresses. But the audience cannot see the actors or actresses directly because film is presented through television or VCD. Film is a motion picture which requires convention and has abilities to change the setting quickly and sound effect dramatically, so that the viewers are satisfied without sitting in front of the stage (Schmidt, Bogarad, and Crockett, 2006: 1418).

By watching film people will get many things such as finding many different characters in the film, learning something from film, for instance people can learn about struggle, happiness, and love, and getting information about culture. Culture is the way of life of a people, behaviors, the things they make, their ideas, economics, and religion (Rosman and rubel, 1989: 6). It is part of our life and all human cannot be separated from the culture. Every country has its own culture, so there are cultural differences between one country and others. Sometimes, it causes misunderstanding among people. Therefore, in this study

the writer investigated the cultural problem between west and east which is done by the character.

“The Namesake” film is interested to be analyzed because some reasons. First, it is related with culture. This film tells about someone named Ashima Ganguli who faced the new environment when she moved to America. As newcomer she faced the cultural problems. The different culture made her have to adapt in her life indeed. It is not easy for her to overcome the problems that appear because of cultural differences. So it is very interesting to know how she overcomes the cultural problems. Second, this film has different setting of two countries that is America and India. It will give the information to the reader about the custom of both countries. So, the reader will not face the cultural problems if they come to America and India.

Based on the explanation above, the research of the cultural problems between

west and east faced by Ashima ganguli found in “The Namesake” film is

conducted.

1.2. Statement of Problem

Based on the background of the study stated above, the statements of the problems are:

1. What were the cultural problems between west and east faced by Ashima Ganguli in “The Namesake” film?

2. What were the effects of cultural problems between west and east for Ashima Ganguli’s life in “The Namesake” film?

3. How did Ashima Ganguli overcome the cultural problems between west and east faced by her in “The Namesake” film?

1.3. Purpose of Study

The purposes of this study are as follows:

1. To know what the cultural problems between west and east faced by Ashima Ganguli in “The Namesake” film were.

2. To explain what the effect of cultural problems between west and east for Ashima Ganguli’slife in “The Namesake” film were.

3. To dig out the way how Ashima Ganguli overcame the cultural problems between west and east faced by her in “The Namesake” film.

1.4. Significance of the Study

This study is expected to have significance for some field, they are:

1. For the learners and teachers of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, this study will enrich and enlarge their knowledge about literary especially about film and they can take the lessons from the story for their daily life.

2. For society, the result of this study will give them information about two different cultures, India and America in order to avoid cultural problems when they go to another country.

3. For the next researchers who are interested in analyzing literary work especially film, the result of this study can be used for reference for doing the similar research.

5 1.5. Scope and Limitation

This study is focused on “The Namesake” film. The writer focuses on cultural

problems between west and east (America and India) which is done by the character. Meanwhile, the limitation of analysis is the effect of cultural problems between west and east and how to overcome the cultural problems between west and east faced by Ashima Ganguli.

1.6. Definition of Key Terms

1. Analysis is study of something by examining its part (Oxford dictionary, 2003:13).

2. Culture is the way of life of a people, behaviors, the things they make, their ideas, economics, and religion (Rosman and rubel, 1989: 6).

3. West culture is a culture which explains about of logics, technologies, and individualism. Gilgen and Cho (1979). The example countries that include west culture are England, Austria, and America. The west culture in this study is America.

4. East cultureis culture based on religion, the important of spiritual and mystics. Gilgen and Cho (1979). The example countries that include east culture are Indonesia, Japan, China, and India. The east culture in this study is India. 5. Problem is thing that is difficult to deal with or understand (Oxford dictionary,

6. Cultural Problem is a problem occurs as a result of misinterpretations, ethnocentrism, stereotypes and prejudice (Deena R. Levine and Mara, D.Adelman, 1982).

7. The namesake is the title of the film that would be analyzed by the writer. 8. Ashima Ganguli is a character which is analyzed by the writer.
