CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter presents the conclusion and suggestion of the research. The conclusion is made based on the result of the analysis in Chapter IV and answers
the research questions proposed in Chapter I. In addition, suggestion is made to lead the next researcher who is interested in analyzing similar research.
5.1 Conclusion
Based on the data conducted in the Chapter IV, there are 22 data which have been analyzed in total. From the analysis, the research question in chapter I
can be answered. In regard to the research questions, there are several conclusions can be made:
1. There are four strategies found in the tact maxim utterances used by
the characters in the Beauty and the Beast movie script; positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off record. From
those 4 strategies, positive politeness is the dominant strategy used. The details can be seen in appendices page 82
2. From the politeness strategies used in the tact maxim, the pragmatic
scale which appear on each strategies are cost-benefit scale, optionality, indirectness, social distance, and power authority scale.
None of them is being the dominant in every strategies, since they appear in every strategies used to make a polite utterance be more
polite. However, the pragmatic scale found in off record is only one scale which is indirectness scale since the utterance which used an off
record strategy is only one. Thus, there is no other representative for other scales except indirectness scale. For more details, see appendices
page 83. To further qualify the conclusion, the writer can say that pragmatic scales
can appear in every politeness strategies. Additionally, both pragmatic scales and politeness strategies have the correlation to make the polite utterance. Politeness
strategies used to show the politeness of R in saying what R wants to E so that E feels respected by R. In addition, pragmatic scales used to measure the politeness
made by using those politeness strategies either it is less polite or more polite. From the data found, the more pragmatic scales used in the politeness strategies,
the higher politeness can be made.
5.2 Suggestion
In a very beautiful rose, there is always a thorn. Similar to this research that still has some lacks in the analysis. Thus, the writer hopes that the next
researchers who are interested in doing the similar research can complete the lack of this research by using it as the references for the improvement. With regard to
the conclusion, several suggestions can be made: 1.
Since the politeness strategies are analyzed based on the indicator of the sub strategies in every strategy only, not about the intention why R uses
certain strategy, so it can be analyzed about the reason why R uses positive
politeness strategy rather than negative politeness or, off record rather than bald on-record and so on.
2. Since the pragmatic scales analyzed are only one scale in one politeness
strategy, the next researcher can analyze the double scale or more which appear in the certain politeness strategies. Additionally, it can be analyzed
as well about the implicature in the polite utterance because sometimes, people use the politeness strategy and the higher scale of politeness when
they have another motive beyond the utterance.
