APPENDICES

THE BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR OF JOE HILL

Joseph Hillstrom King was born June 4, 1972 in Hermon Miane, better known by the pen name Joe Hill. He is the second son of writer Stephen King and Tabitha King. He also is an American author and comic book writer. He has published three novels Heart-Shaped Box, Horns and NOS4A2 and a collection of short stories titled 20th Century Ghosts. He is also the author of the comic book series Locke & Key.

Hill choose to use an abbreviated form of his given name (a reference to executed labor leader Joe Hill, for whom he was named) in 1997, out of a desire to succeed based solely on his own merits rather than as the son of Stephen King. After achieving a degree of independent success, Hill publicly confirmed his identity in2007 after an article the previous year in Variety broke his cover (although online speculation about Hill's family background had been appearing since 2005).

Joe Hill is a past recipient of the Ray Bradbury Fellowship. He has also received the William L. Crawford award for best new fantasy writer in 2006, the A. E. Coppard Long Fiction Prize in 1999 for "Better Than Home" and the 2006 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella for "Voluntary Committal". His stories have appeared in a variety of magazines, such as Subterranean Magazine, Postscripts and The High Plains Literary Review, and in many anthologies, including The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror (ed. Stephen Jones) and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror (ed. Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link & Gavin Grant).

Hill's first book, the limited edition collection 20th Century Ghosts (published in 2005 by PS Publishing), showcases fourteen of his short stories and won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection, together with the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection and Best Short Story for "Best New Horror". In October 2007, Hill's mainstream US and UK publishers reprinted 20th Century Ghosts, without the extras published in the 2005 slip cased versions, but including one new story.

Hill's first novel, Heart-Shaped Box, was published by William Morrow/HarperCollins on February 13, 2007 and by Victor Gollancz Ltd in UK in March 2007. The novel reached number eight on the New York Times bestseller list on April 1, 2007.When he began writing, Hill was well aware of the inevitable comparisons that would arise between his own work and that of his father, Stephen King, one of the world's best-selling and most-recognized living novelists, with the name "King" being synonymous with horror fiction. Stephen King had himself used a pen-name, Richard Bachman, after he had become

(3)

well-established, explaining later in the short essay, "Why I Was Bachman" that he felt he had to know whether he could "re-achieve" success as an author purely through the quality of his writing, as opposed to what perceived as the "brand" that had become established through his own name. Joseph King chose to take the same approach; although many readers (and most reviewers) are now aware of the connection, his fiction has been widely praised, and many critics have stressed their own objectivity and lack of preconceptions when reviewing his works.

On September 23, 2007, at the thirty-first Fantasy on, the British Fantasy Society awarded Hill the first ever Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award. Hill's first professional sale was in 1997. Among unpublished works is one partly completed with his father, "But Only Darkness Loves Me", which is held with the Stephen King papers at the Special Collections Unit of the Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine.

Hill is also the author of Locke & Key, a comic book series published by IDW Publishing. The first issue, released on February 20, 2008, sold out of its initial publication run in one day. A collection of the series in limited form from Subterranean Press sold out within 24 hours of being announced.

Hill's second novel, Horns, was published on February 16, 2010. A film based on the novel was released in 2014.NOS4A2, his third novel, was published on April 30, 2013. The novel peaked at number five on the New York Times bestseller list and is the bestselling novel of his career to date. Hill is currently working on his fourth novel called The Fireman, set to release in early 2016.

SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL

Ignatius Perrish was always seen by the people in town as an outsider. None of that mattered to him, because he was in love with Merrin Williams. They are laying beneath a tree in the woods kissing. She asks him if he's horny. He says he's getting there. Ig promises to love Merrin for the rest of his life. She just wants him to love her for the rest of hers.

Ig wakes up lying on the floor clutching a bottle of vodka. He groggily goes into the living room and puts on a David Bowie record to play "Heroes". He sees Merrin dancing for him. Outside his window is a news van and many angry protesters, holding signs that condemn Ig to hell. Merrin has been murdered, and everyone thinks he did it. Ig calls his lawyer friend Lee Torneau for help. He then goes to his family's home for sanctuary from the press. Ig's brother Terry wants to help Ig clear his name. Their father Derrick has sought a lawyer for Ig, but all the other lawyers want Ig to take a plea, while Lee knows he is innocent. Lee later comes over to join his friends. He tells Ig that any evidence found on Merrin's remains were burned in a forensics lab, thereby leaving Ig with nothing to prove his innocence. Ig vows to find the real killer and finish him off.

Ig goes to a bar where the bartender refuses to serve him because the other patrons are afraid of him. Glenna, an old friend of Ig's, takes pity on him and pours him a drink. She offers to go have a drink with him, but he wants to be alone. A large gathering of townspeople come together for a vigil around the tree where Merrin's body was found. Her father Dale tearfully talks about his daughter

(5)

and also accuses Ig of killing her. Ig watches from a treehouse above them. After everybody leaves, Ig stomps on a statue of the Virgin Mary and then pees all over the candles. Glenna catches him and tells him to calm down. Ig blames God for not caring about Merrin when she needed help.

The next morning, Ig awakens after sleeping with Glenna to two horns protruding from his head. He gets dressed and asks Glenna if she notices the horns. She does, but doesn't react beyond a laugh. She sees a box of doughnuts on the coffee table and asks Ig if she can eat all of them. He says yes, and she stuffs one in her mouth. It makes her stomach feel bad, and she washes it down with Diet Coke. Yet she still wants to eat the whole box because, as she casually tells Ig, she wants to get fat because everybody thinks she is trash and that nobody would sleep with her unless they were drunk like Ig was.

Ig goes to the doctor to get the horns checked out. A little girl is screaming in the waiting room while her mother sits and does nothing. The mother tells Ig that she wants to kick her daughter's ass, divorce her husband, and go have sex with her black golf instructor because she prefers "black cock". A disturbed Ig goes to the receptionist and gives back the form he had to fill out. The receptionist tells Ig that she just wants to tell the mother to shut her kid up. She asks Ig if he thinks it's okay and he says yes. The receptionist gets up and yells at the mother to take her "screeching pig" out. The mother angrily yells at the receptionist and goes up to her. Ig grabs her arm and gets a peek inside her mind. He sees the woman having sex with her golf instructor and dealing with the

(6)

screaming daughter at home. The little girl also tells Ig that she hates her mother and wants to burn her in her bed with matches.

Ig sees the nurse. She is checking his blood pressure but is fixated on his horns. She tells him that she knows her boyfriend is seeing another girl. The doctor comes in and sees the horns but doesn't bother dealing with them and instead tells Ig that he wants to have sex with his daughter's friend, and then offers to snort oxycontin with Ig. Ig just tells him to saw the horns off. The doctor puts Ig under anesthesia and he passes out. We see a flashback to when Ig was a child and he first saw Merrin in church. She shined the light reflecting off her cross necklace in Ig's direction. Derrick tells him it's morse code. After the service, he finds Merrin's necklace, broken.

Later on, Ig would hang out with Terry, Lee, Glenna, and another kid named Eric by the docks. They lit off cherry bombs and talked about Merrin, to whom Ig is attracted, which upset Glenna because none of the other boys seemed to really notice her. After lighting off a number of cherry bombs, Eric tells Ig he'll give him his last one if he rides down a log rail in a cart naked. Ig takes the challenge and rides off into the lake, hitting his head on a log. The logs come together, trapping him underneath. Lee jumps in and rescues Ig. Eric is forced to hand Ig the cherry bomb.

Lee fixes the cross necklace and gives it to Ig in exchange for the cherry bomb. Ig gives it back to Merrin and starts hanging out with her. Ig learns that Merrin's mother passed away from cancer. They go back to his house and listen to David Bowie. Terry runs in and tells Ig that the cherry bomb blew up in Lee's

(7)

hand. They run to the hospital where the boy has lost two fingers. He does feel happy seeing Ig and Merrin together. Ig later confesses to Merrin that it was Lee who fixed the necklace, and he blames himself for what happened to him. Merrin assures him that she left the necklace for Ig to find. They have their first kiss. Ig wakes up to see that the doctor left the saw in the horn to have sex with the nurse right next to him. Disgusted, Ig leaves, only to see in the mirror that the horns have grown.

Ig finds a priest and asks for his help. The priest coldly suggests that he can get a rope and hang Ig, or Ig can do the deed himself. The only person that doesn't notice the horns is Lee. This makes Ig think the horns don't work on good people. Ig goes to his parents' home and hears the truth from both of them - his mother thinks she would be happier if he wasn't her son, and Derrick always thought Ig was a difficult child, and that he hates Ig for supposedly killing Merrin, because she was the only thing that he loved about Ig. He also reveals that he had someone burn the evidence in the forensics lab. Ig calls Lee about this, who says it's probably a blessing in disguise.

Ig goes to the bar but is harassed by a gaggle of reporters trying to get a hot scoop from him. Ig tells them to fight each other, and whoever wins gets to interview him. The reporters then get into an intense brawl while Ig walks into the bar. The bartender threatens to hit Ig, but Ig tells him he doesn't want to do that. The bartender admits he wants to burn the bar down and collect the insurance money. Ig demands anybody in the bar to tell him if they know anything about Merrin's murder. The other patrons just admit more sinful things, and one man

(8)

takes his pants off and whips his penis out. Ig leaves as the bartender lights the place up, and he walks past the reporters, still fighting.

As Ig sits in his car to have a smoke, he notices a small box in the glove compartment. In another flashback, we see that Ig was telling Lee and Terry that he was planning to propose to Merrin that night at the diner, and that the guys would join them to celebrate. Ig later goes to the diner to meet with Merrin, who looks melancholic. She tells Ig that she is moving to Los Angeles, which he thinks is a good chance for a fresh start. However, Merrin says they should break up and see other people to know if he really wants to spend the rest of his life with her. He thinks she is already seeing someone else. She starts to leave, and Ig gets up and loudly argues with her until the manager tells him to leave. Ig leaves without a fight, just as Terry starts to come in. The next morning, Eric, now a cop, finds Ig sleeping in his car and asks him when he last saw Merrin. The fact that Ig asked if something happened to her only fuels Eric's suspicions. Ig returns to the diner to talk to the waitress, Veronica, who has been feeding the police false information about Ig on the night Merrin was killed. Veronica told the cops that Ig dragged Merrin into his car and took her into the woods to kill her before having anal sex with her. All of this so that Veronica can be featured on the news as a key witness. Ig goes to the jazz club where Terry plays with his band. Glenna approaches him and admits that she was always in love with Ig, which he did already know. After the performance, Terry meets Ig outside and admits that he was with Merrin after Ig left the diner. Ig attacks his brother and, as he touches him, sees into Terry's mind to that night. Terry drove Merrin away from the diner,

(9)

but she ran away into the woods in the pouring rain. The next morning, Terry woke up in his car with a bloody rock in his hand. He ran into the woods to find Merrin dead. He wrapped the rock in his shirt and threw it in the lake to avoid being implicated. After this, Eric and his partner come in and cuff Ig. The two cops then make crude jokes about beating Ig while they jerk off.

The next day, Ig finds Lee in town wearing Merrin's cross necklace. Lee denies it at first but then says she gave it to him. Ig breaks down, thinking Lee was the one that Merrin was leaving him for. Ig then goes to Dale's home to try and see if he knew if Merrin was seeing anybody or mentioned leaving him, only to have Dale point a shotgun at him, ordering him to get off his property. Ig goes down an alley to forcibly remove the horns, to no avail. A group of snakes slither on over to him, but they do not harm him. They slither onto him, and he is okay with it. Ig walks past Eric and his partner in their car. They threaten to arrest him, but Ig says they would be happier sucking each other off. The two admit they're gay and that they love each other, and they proceed to make out and have sex. Ig then gathers the snakes and finds Veronica in her car. The snakes make their way into the car and bite Veronica all over her face and body, scarring her and ensuring that she can't enjoy a life of fame.

Ig, wearing the snake around his neck, goes to find Terry doing a lot of drugs. Ig forces Terry to do an enormous amount to trip out and eventually torture him with the same feelings that Merrin felt the night she died. Terry experiences a horrible trip and collapses. Down by the docks the next day, Ig meets up with Lee. Ig removes the cross necklace from him, and Lee can finally see Ig's horns. And

(10)

then he admits that it was he who really killed Merrin. Ig chokes Lee and sees his memories. Previously, Merrin suspected that Ig was going to propose, and she asked Lee if it's true. He said maybe. Merrin recently learned some things about herself and didn't want Ig to be involved with it, so she confided this to Lee. On the night that Ig left the diner, Lee followed Terry and Merrin until they stopped by the woods. Lee found Merrin in there and tried to kiss her, but she pulled back. He thought she left Ig for him, but Merrin says she loves Ig more than anything in the world. Angry, Lee struck Merrin and raped her before cracking her head with a rock. He then planted the bloody rock in Terry's hand and fled the scene. Ig grabs a pitchfork and tells Lee to go turn himself in, but Lee grabs a chain and whips Ig in the back repeatedly. He pushes him in his car and douses it with kerosene, then sets it on fire. Unable to get out, Ig drives the car into the lake. Lee later tells the police that Ig confessed to killing Merrin before killing himself.

Ig emerges from the lake, terribly burnt but alive. He returns to Dale's home. Dale now realizes that Ig really didn't kill Merrin. He invites Ig inside and gives him a key that Merrin wanted him to have. Ig hands Dale her necklace, but Dale lets him keep it. Ig puts it around his neck, and then his burns heal and the horns go away. Ig brings the key to the treehouse and opens a box with a note inside from Merrin. It's written in morse code, and it says that Merrin knew she was dying of cancer like her mother, and after seeing how it affected her father, she didn't want Ig to know about it since he would have only wanted to marry her more, and she didn't want him to live with her suffering. She does vow to find him again someday in the same treehouse. Ig cries.

(11)

Ig visits Terry in the hospital, recovering from his drug episode. Ig is sorry for what he did, and he tells Terry that Lee is the real killer and that he's going after him. Ig goes to Lee's house and asks him to join him for a walk. They go into the woods to the spot where Lee killed Merrin. Eric appears with a shotgun aimed at Lee, followed closely by Terry, who told Eric about Lee. Lee appears to go quietly, but he trips Eric and grabs the shotgun and shoots Terry in the leg. Ig grabs the pitchfork and tries to pull the shotgun out of Lee's hand, only to aim it directly in Eric's face and blow his head off. Ig and Lee struggle, when Ig then takes off the cross necklace. He suddenly grows wings that lift him in the air, and then they catch fire. His whole body is consumed by fire until he morphs into a demonic creature with bigger horns. Lee shoots at Ig, who bleeds lava, but he charges at Lee and impales him with his horn and throws him against a tree. The snakes then come by and wrap themselves around Lee, and one snake slithers through the impalement wound and into Lee's mouth, gagging him to death. Ig, now having avenged Merrin, falls and begins turning to stone. Terry rushes to his brother's side.

3. THE DESCRIPTION 3.1 Suspect

Ignatius Perrish is local youth in the city of Gideon, New Hampshire. Ig was an ideal man before Merrin's death. He was a daredevil as a boy; adventurous and courageous. Merrin completed him, and her death left him a broken man filled with grief and bitterness towards the world and a desire for vengeance. He became cruel and sadistic to those who framed him. He cursed and hated God and became a blasphemous character.

He was accused of raping and killing his own girlfriend, Merrin Williams. Although never charged due to insufficient evidence, he received social punishment of people who believe that he did. Merrin's death certainly made him sad and depressed, but the problem is just beginning when he found two horns growing on his head after waking from a heavy hangover. To complete the misery, thehorn was also given magical ability to make someone pull out their darkest side that will be used to investigate who the perpetrators IgMerrin killer who had destroyed his life .

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances. A

(14)

mental breakdown would have been the most natural thing in the world. But there was nothing natural about the horns, which were all too real.

Once the righteous Ighad enjoyed the life of the blessed: born into privilege, the second son of a renowned musician and younger brother of a rising late-night TV star, he had security, wealth, and a place in his community.Ig had it all, and more. He had Merrin and a love founded on shared daydreams, mutual daring, and unlikely midsummer magic. But Merrin's death damned all that. The only suspect in the crime, Ig was never charged or tried. And he was never cleared. In the court of public opinion in Gideon, New Hampshire, Ig is and always will be guilty because his rich and connected parents pulled strings to make the investigation go away. Nothing Ig can do, nothing he can say, matters. Everyone, it seems, including God, has abandoned him. Everyone, that is, but the devil inside. It can be seen in this quotation:

“God, in His wisdom, feels no need to use His power to save anyone from a single moment of suffering, and in spite of his inaction He is celebrated and revered…I do not claim that God is dead. I tell you He is alive and well but in no position to offer salvation, being damned Himself for His criminal indifference…The devil is anything but indifferent. The devil is always there to help those who are ready to sin, which is another word for ‘live.”

(Horns 2010: 165)

Now Ig is possessed of a terrible new power to go with his terrible new look a macabre talent he intends to use to find the monster who killed Merrin and destroyed his life. Being good and praying for the best got him nowhere. It's time for a little revenge. It's time the devil had his due.

(15)

Ig lying drunk on the floor of his house. He peered out of the house, and as expected, the group of journalists and local residents had gathered in front there. Bringing some mock article about the murder and the killer.Ig is the main suspect Merrin's death. Girlfriend which he said he loved very much. The girl was found dead with broken head was hit by a blunt object, just below the tree house that used to be where he was going out with Ig. Merrin has also been mortem corpse, and it turns out the killer raped before killing Merrin.

Ig find it impossible to kill him. But everyone in town, including his mother and father believe that is the killer. Only Lee, his friend and Terry Perish, Ig brother who believes that he is not a killer Merrin.Ig really angry at himself and to God. In one night, drunk, urinating on a statue of the Virgin Mary Ig existing under the tree house where the body was found Merrin. The next day a strange thing happened to Ig. The head grows a pair of horns. Just like devil horns.

Everyone can see it. But feel mediocre. As if the horn was indeed there since birth Ig.

Ig visit to the hospital to ask what objects it grows on his head. But some other strange events occur. Suddenly everyone near Ig openly talked about the sins of the Ig. Several other Ig even told about their evil plans. As if Ig was present to listen to the evil thoughts of all those people.Oddly enough, these people will follow the advice of Ig with a very conscious. For example when a doctor who wants to dissect the horns on the head Ig asked, "Can I have sex with my nurse?"

(16)

Ig is in a state of stupor turns nodded. And when conscious, he saw the doctor making love with the nurse. Realizing the power of this new, Ig use it to uncover who the real killer Merrin. And that force was amazingly helpful. People become more open in Ig. He is not only closer to the real killer Merrin, but because of the strength of Ig, he came to know the thoughts of the people around him.

Ig came to know that his father was not ever proud to have a son like him. He came to know that his mother is also ashamed of it, and hope Ig went away from his family life. Because the status of a suspect Ig has ruined the life of the mother.Of course this makes Ig increasingly depressed. He realized that nobody in this world who loved him as Merrin love. The strength helped him to know where people are nice to him sincerely, and which ones are just pretending.

But the strength of Ig not apply to Lee. Friend and his lawyer did not even get to see a large horns that grew in the head Ig. Ig took the theory that good people like Lee is not going to see the devil horns on his head. But Ig failed to prove the theory of Terry, his brother who he thought was also a good person. Terry even finally admitted that he was the last person to see the figure of Merrin. Even the stone that struck the head Merrin had stopped in his hand. Again, Ig thought was a good person who betrayed him.

That it turns out, Lee wears the sacred necklace belonging Merrin to protect them from the power of Ig. And Lee was the one who turns to rape Merrin and then kill that poor girl.

(17)

Ignatius figure who suddenly had horns is the personification of the devil. His ability to make people tell about their sin is also a metaphor of human intimacy and demons. Describe how close we are to the actions of irrational and careless that stems from lust.

Ig allows the horns to make the people who tell the truth, and Ig also decided to use the power of the horn to find the murderer of his girlfriend and actually wanted to revenge. The horns are revealed to force people around Ig to tell him their darkest secrets and desires. Ig goes to a bar, where he goads the reporters into a brawl and encourages the bartender to burn down the building, but also learns that the new witness for the prosecution is the waitress from the diner where Merrin had broken up with him the night she died. Ig finds the waitress, and discovers that she has been fabricating her stories to become famous. When Ig talks to Terry, he learns that Terry had driven Merrin from the diner the night she died. Touching Terry's skin, Ig sees what happened that night: Merrin left the car en route to her home and ran into the woods; Terry passed out in the car, and woke up the next morning with a bloody rock in his hand, finding Merrin dead under the treehouse. Infuriated, Ig brutally assaults Terry until he is arrested by a police officer, another childhood friend named Eric. The next morning Ig is released from jail with Lee's help, discovering that Lee had been wearing Merrin's cross necklace, and as a result couldn't see Ig's horns.

Ig realizes that snakes are following him wherever he goes, and uses them to exact vengeance against the waitress. He also forces Terry to overdose on drugs, which cause Terry to be tormented with memories of Merrin's death. Ig

(18)

meets Lee by the docks and pulls off Merrin's necklace; exposed to the horns, Lee falls under their influence, admitting he killed Merrin. In flashbacks, it is shown that Lee was also in love with Merrin and was deeply jealous of Ig throughout their childhood. Lee followed Merrin into the woods, thinking that she had broken up with Ig to be with him, and in a jealous rage raped her, killed her with a rock which he planted on Terry and stole her necklace. As Ig sees all of this, Lee overpowers him and lights him on fire in his car, causing Ig to drive into the bay. To the authorities, Lee claims that Ig confessed to the crime and committed suicide. In reality, with the power of the horns, Ig survives, horrifically burned and disfigured.

Merrin's father, who now believes Ig's innocence, gives Ig the key to Merrin's lock box. When Ig puts on Merrin's cross, his body is restored and his horns disappear. In the box, he finds a note from Merrin that explains that she knew he was going to propose and wanted to accept, but she was dying from cancer and didn't want him to suffer through what her father did, so she pushed him away under the pretense of loving someone else. Ig confronts Lee, who does not remember their earlier fight, and leads him into the woods where Merrin was killed. Meanwhile Eric and Terry arrive, intent on arresting Lee. Lee confesses to the murder, but then gleefully kills Eric and injures Terry. Ig tears off the necklace, sprouting a pair of wings and bursting into flame. He transforms into a demonic creature, and after a struggle, gruesomely murders Lee. Stating that his vengeance was all-consuming, Ig dies from his injuries, and appears to be reunited with Merrin in the afterlife.

3.2 Murder of Merrin

Murder is the crime of deliberately killing a person something that is very difficult or unpleasant. The term “murder” comes from middle English murther, from Old English morthor; partly from Middle English murder, from Anglo-French, of Germanic origin; akin to Old English morthor; akin to Old High German mord murder, Latin mort-, mors death, mori to die, mortuus dead, Greek brotos mortal.

A person who commits murder is called a murderer. Murder is the unlawful killing, with malice afore thought, of another human, and generally this premeditated state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter). As the loss of a human being inflicts enormous grief upon the individuals close to the victim, and the commission of murder is highly detrimental to the good order within society, most societies both present and in antiquity have considered it a most serious crime worthy of the harshest of punishment in most countries, a person convicted of murder is typically given a long prison sentence, possibly a life sentence where permitted, and in some countries, the death penalty may be imposed for such an act- thought this practice is becoming less common.

The night that Merrin broke it off with Ig and was murdered. They meet at a local watering hole. Ig is about to take off for a six month internship in England with Amnesty International. Merrin surprises Ig by telling him that she thinks they should see other people while Ig is gone. The only relationship they’ve ever had is with each other. Merrin insists that they should explore other

(20)

opportunities. Ig is stunned and devastated. He argues with her, pleads with her, and then flees from the bar in anger. What Merrindoes afterward we learn later.

Ig decides to confront Lee with the knowledge that he killed Merrin. Everybody else is compelled to tell Ig the truth. Ig hopes it will be the same with Lee who now works for a Republican congressman. He arrives and is confronted by the congressman’s security detail. Lee agrees to come down and see him. Ig lays out his accusation and waits for the horns to work. Lee is unfazed. He denies killing Merrin and tells Ig to get gone. Ig takes up residence in the old foundry where they played as children. He sleeps in the furnace and makes friends with the numerous snakes who inhabit the area. They congregate around him. He’s always been afraid of snakes, but how he finds an affinity for them.

He returns to his parents home and finds Terry there. By touching Terry, he learns why his own brother was complicit in the murder of his girlfriend and covered for Lee. Lee and Terry were out partying one night. Lee tells Terry that Merrin has confided in him that she plans to break it off with Ig. He wants to drive by the bar where Merrin is meeting Ig to make sure they are okay. Terry is too drunk and too stoned to protest.

They get there and find Merrin standing outside in the rain, crying. Lee asks her to get into the car and they take off. Terry passes out in the backseat, striking his head on a tool box. While Terry is passed out, Lee goes off into the woods with Merrin. He returns and awakens Terry and tells him that Merrin is dead. Furthermore, he has made it so that it will appear as if Terry killed her. Terry is blackmailed into keeping quiet. The actual events that transpired between

(21)

Lee and Merrin are not yet revealed. Ig returns to the foundry to ponder what he’s learned. He gets drunk on cheap wine and notices that the snakes have once again gathered. He delivers a drunken sermon to his new congregation about how God fears women because, like God, women have the power of creating life.

He also has a flashback to a memory of an afternoon when he and Merrin were teenagers and found a tree house in the middle of the woods. The couple enter the tree house and make love. While lying in afterglow, somebody tries to force entry into the tree house via a trap door. Scared, Ig and Merrin place and old chair over the door. The person leaves. The couple then pray over plastic figurines of Mary, Jesues, and the Devil and leave. They try tofind the tree house again, but are never able to find it.

As he’s reveling in his past and preaching to his slithering congregation, Lee shows up with his henchman. Ig notices that Lee is wearing Merrin’s crucifix and rips it from his neck as Lee and his assistant administer a beating. They then put Ig in his car and set it afire. Instead of killing Ig, the fire restores his senses. He releases the parking brake and allows the car to roll down the hill into the river. He swims from the car with the assistance of the many snakes in the river.

Then flashback to Lee’s early life. He endured a serious brain injury as a child and his personality underwent a major change. About his lust for Merrin and how he slowly killed his mother by sweating her death in a hot room as she was prostrate from cancer. Lee and Ig were supportive and sympathetic to the young Lee as his mother laid dying. Merrin shows up just after she dies and they embrace. Lee cops a feel and Merrin allows him to. This leads Lee to believe that

(22)

Merrin wants him. He reads desire in every remark and gesture. However, when he finds her outside the bar the night she breaks it off with Ig, she tells Lee she was never interested in him. In a rage, Lee rapes and kills her with a large rock. He plants blood from Terry’s cut head on the rock to use for blackmail.

‘She was your friend,Lee,’Ig said as he retreated around the front end of the car. ‘she trusted you, and you raped her and killed her and left her in the woods. How could you do that?’ (Horns 2010,198)

Recovered from the car fire, Ig is standing on the shore when he notices the police have arrived and a crowd has gathered. Among the crowd is Merrin’s father. Using the power of the horns, Ig convinces Merrin’s father to take him to their home. Ig explores the house and eventually makes his way to the attic where he finds Merrin’s possessions boxed up. There, he finds out the true story of Merrin’s breakup with him.

As she’d once used Morse code to attract him, she’d planned to use Morse code to explain why she was breaking it off with him. She’d planned to mail the coded letter after he’d left for England. In the letter, she explains that she has breast cancer – the same type that killed her sister. She has decided she will not undergo chemotherapy. She wants Ig out of her life because she knows that her love for him might compel her to try the therapy – not for herself – but out of love for Ig. He returns to the foundry. His old girlfriend, Glenna finds him there and they talk. Using his newly acquired power of suggestion, he tells Glenna to leave their hometown and find a better life. She leaves, but forgets her cell phone. Ig puts the cell phone to use.

(23)

It isn’t long before Ig discovers that along with the horns he has developed some rather extraordinary powers which can only be of supernatural origin. The first of these powers to present itself is not one that overly thrills him and over which he seems to have very little control. It seems that anyone he now comes across feels the need to tell him some very bad things about themselves, dark secrets they would never share with those close to them let alone with a complete stranger.

And the things revealed to him by his live-in sort of girlfriend, Glenna, and his family members threaten to immediately and irrevocably destroy whatever relationships he may have had with these people, the few left in town who have not turned their backs on him. It’s no secret that the vast majority of the local townsfolk do not think too highly of Ig these days. You see, a year earlier Ig’s longtime girlfriend, Merrin, was found raped and brutally murdered beneath a tree out near a local, long abandoned foundry.

Ig was the prime suspect but ended up staying out of prison do to the rather timely destruction of some key evidence in the case. Sure, Ig knows that he is innocent. He would have never hurt Merrin. Never. Not like that. She was the love of his life. Even if their relationship did fall on some rough times shortly before she was found dead. But most people think he is guilty. Even certain members of his family question his innocence, he comes to discover, thanks to the power of the horns. A power he certainly did not ask for but which he comes to realize may be able to help him find the person responsible for Merrin’s death.

(24)

Before Merrin dies, she has written a letter to Iggy. This is the content of the letters section:

“Dear Ig, you will never read this while I’m alive. I’m not sure I want you to read it even if I’m dead. I guess I don’t mind. The sort of cancer I have is the same that struck my sister down, a sort known to run in families.I'd ’ust as soon skip all that, thanks. But I don’t know how to do it yet, how to die. I’m afraid if I tell you I’m sick, you will give up your future ans ask to marry me, and I will be weak and say yes, and then you’ll be shackled to me. You don’t know how hard it is not to talk about things with you. I can hurt you just enough to push you away. I’m not sure I really neeed to write so much. Probably could’ve saved myself a lot of effort and just copied out the first message I ever sent you, flashing you with my cross. US. That says most of it. Here’s the rest: I love you, Iggy Perrish. Your girl, Merrin Williams.” (Horns 2010: 374)

Horns is several stories rolled into one. At its heart, it is a detailed account of Ig’s physical and spiritual transformation into something demonic. It is also a revenge tale as Ig unravels the mystery of Merrin’s death and sets out to enact his vengeance upon the killer. It is also a love story told in flashbacks that reveal, almost poetically at times, the fairytale romance that Ig and Merrin once shared.

3.3 Love

When they were kids, Terry dares Ig to ride a shopping cart down a hill near an abandoned foundry. If he does it, Terry will give him a cherry bomb. Ig takes the ride and crashes at the bottom, landing in a deep pool of water. He is pulled from the water and when he awakens, it’s Lee who is standing over him. Ig believes that Lee has rescued him and the two quickly become best friends.

(25)

Lee and Ig attend the same church. One day, Ig notices a new girl sitting in a pew across the aisle from him. The cross she wears around her neck reflects light into Ig’s eyes and Ig believes she is telegraphing a message to him in Morse code. He is immediately infatuated. When church ends, Ig notices that the cross has fallen from her neck and is laying on the pew, its clasp broken. Ig retrieves it, hoping to fix it and return it to her. It can be seen in this quotation:

“And then it was time to sing, and they all stood, and Ig looked at the girl again, and as she came to her feet, she rose into a shaft of sunshine and a crown of fire settled on her brushed and shining red hair. She turned and looked him again, opening her mouth to sing, only she gave a little cry instead, soft yet carrying. She had been about to flash him with the cross when the delicate gold chain came loose and spilled into her hand.” (Horns,2010:76)

One evening Lee is visiting Ig and Ig tells Lee about the cross and the girl in church. Lee has noticed this new girl as well. Lee offers to fix the clasp on the cross for Ig. Ig, still feeling a debt to Lee for saving his life, gives him the cross and tells him to fix it and return it to the girl.

Lee fixes the cross, but Ig, still desperate to meet this new girl who he learns will be moving to town permanently soon, trades his cherry bomb to Lee to get the cross back. When Merrin appears in church that Sunday, Ig introduces himself and returns the cross. They soon become a couple. Later, the whole town finds out that Lee is in fact a thief and liar. He’s been stealing merchandise from stores in the mall where he works. He’s also been running a magazine sales scam, claiming the money was for charity. After a trip to juvenile court, Lee seems to be born again and strives to do good deeds, talking to Sunday school children about

(26)

his misdeeds and how he found salvation. Later, Lee and his buddies detonate the cherry bomb on the windshield of an old car. A piece of glass lodges itself in Lee’s eye and he loses his sight. Ig feels guilty and visits him in the hospital. Lee assures Ig that it was not his fault.

The high school past of Ig and Terry Perrish, Merrin Williams, and Lee Tourneau is explored, with the cherry as a common motif, referring to Merrin's red hair, the loss of virginity, and the characters' involvement with cherry bombs. Ig agrees to a bet: if he rides a shopping cart naked down a perilous trail in the woods by the Knowles River, he will receive a cherry bomb. Although he breaks his nose and briefly loses consciousness when he crashes into the river, Ig survives, believing that Lee Tourneau pulled him out of the water and resuscitated him. Ig and Lee immediately become friends, though Ig is pestered by the uncomfortable feeling of owing Lee a debt.

In church, Ig becomes infatuated with a red-headed girl who has been flirtatiously reflecting light off her cross necklace into his eyes. When the necklace breaks and, unnoticed by her, falls down, Ig collects it and decides to impress her by fixing it. But when Lee expresses an interest in her and shows him how to fix the necklace, Ig lets him have it instead. It can be seen in this quotation:

“I was sitting there imagining a hundred more mornings, roasting in the sun in that church, dying inside one Sunday at a time while Father Mould blabbed away about my sins. I needed something to look forward to. Some reason to be there. I didn't just want to listen to some guy talk about sin. I wanted to do some myself. And then I saw you sitting there like a little priss, hanging on every word like it was all so interesting, and I knew, Ig, I just knew – that with your head would

(27)

present me with hours of entertainment.”(Horns 2010: 102)

Ig trades his cherry bomb with Lee in order to get back the cross. With this, Ig greets Merrin and the two soon become de facto girlfriend and boyfriend. Lee detonates the cherry bomb and damages his eye, which becomes milky and has impaired vision, though his other eye is unimpaired. Lee is also revealed to be a juvenile delinquent, having stolen and sold various items, perhaps as a way of venting his seemingly groundless hatred of his mother. Ig feels not only that he may be responsible for Lee's accident, but that Merrin should not go to the hospital with him to visit Lee, because Ig thinks it would be tantamount to gloating in Lee's face (having won the girl over Lee).

However, the relationship between Merrin and Lee (Ig’s best friend who hopes to make it with Merrin) is truthful and points out a dangerous miscommunication between men and women. Merrin loves Lee as a friend, and he interprets her gestures of friendship as come-ons, arguing when she finally turns him down that she had been leading him on.

The conclusion is that Merrin would never love Lee , he only considers Lee as a good friend . Merrin thinks it is impossible to love a friend of her lover. Lee loved the Ig loved MerrinMerrin as well . Lee has revealed his feelings to

(28)

Merrin , she was also invited to make love but MerrinMerrin reject all that. Lee became angry , he took a stone and killed Merrin . Before Merrin was killed , she also had been raped by Lee . That's the reason why Lee had killed Merrin .

(29)

4. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 4.1 Conclusion

After doing the analysis in chapter 3, has revealed a case of rape and murder mystery lover of Ignatius Perrish, her named Merrin William in the novel horns by Joe Hill. 2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Novel

Novel is a work of fiction that reveal aspects of a deeper humanity and presented smoothly. Novel only tells one of the facets of the lives of the people who are truly exceptional, which resulted in the change of fate. Novel as a work of fiction offers a world, a world contains life model, imaginative world, which built through as instrinsic view, and others, all of which is narrative. Novel is a work of prose that is the story, which tells of remarkable events from the lives of the people (of the story). Said to be an incredible event because this event was born from a conflict, a contention, which turned the fate of major characters.

Peck and Coyle (1984:102) says, “the novel reflectsa move away from an essentially of religious view of life towards a new internet in the complextion of everyday experience. Most novel are concerned with ordinary people and their problem in the societies in which the find themselves.

Novel is literature which tells about narrative fiction or nonfiction. Novels are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves. Novel is fictitious prose narrative of volume length portraying characters and action representative of real life in continuous plot.

Taylor ( 1981:460) says, “Novel is a form of literary work. Novel is normally a prose work of quite some length and complexity, which attempts to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human experience or conduct.”

(32)

Rees (1973:106) says, “ Novel is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length in which characters and action representative of real life are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexity.

Novel has some kind of genres, such as: Picaresque Novel, Epistolary Novel, History Novel, Regional Novel, Satyr Novel, Bildungsroman, Thesis Novel, Roman Noir (Gothic Novel), Roman Fleuve, Roman Feuilleton, Science Fiction, New Roman, and Fact Fiction. From all that kind of novels, we can conclude that the novel is divided into fiction and true story.

Watson (1979:3) says, “Novel is the name of a literary kind, and there is a story tell about how, over the centuries, its substance has widened and its conventions changed.” It means that novel is literary work of prose fiction, longer than a short story or a medium-length fiction, called a novelette or novella.

2.2 Character

Characters is the actor or character in a work that moves the story by fellow character and nature interact. Depiction of character that may be made directly or indirectly by the authors through action, speech, or related temperaments.

Robert and Jacobs (1993:131) says, “in fiction, a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors characters who are worth caring about, rooting, for, and even loving, although there also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate.

(33)

The element of character is one of the important elements in narrative as well as other elements. The character term is usually used in two contexts. The first context, character refers to individuals who appear in the story. The second context, character refers to the mixing of different interest, desired, emotions, and moral principles of those individuals.

Abrahams (1981:20) says that character is presented in a narrative or dramatic work that is interpreted by the reader ha s a certain moral qualities and tendencies as expressed in speech and what is done in action.

In the terms of role or level of importance of character in a story, there are two types of characters. They are main characters and peripheral characters. Nugriyantoro (1995:165) said the characters are people who appear in a work of narrative, or drama, which is interpreted by the readers has a certain moral qualities and tendencies as expressed in speech and what is done in action. In this case a figure closely associated with his personal qualities in admissions readers. Character in fiction has always had personality traits, attitudes, behaviors or certain temperamental.

Taylor (1981:62) says that a character in a novel or play is not real human being and has no life outside the literary compositions; however well the illusions of reality has been created by the author.

2.3 Theme

Theme is the common idea based that sustains a work of literature and are contained in the text as a semantic structure and related equations or differences. The theme is filtered from the important things determines the presence of conflict, events, and situations.

(34)

Peek and Coyle (1984:141) says, “theme of work is the large of idea or concept it is dealing with. In order to grasp the theme of work, we have to stand back from the text and see what sort of general experience or subject links all its detail together.” It means that theme is a large idea, to be able to understand a theme, we must to see from the next or general experience of the author.

Staton (2007:7) stated that theme gives a strong explained about the unity of what is happening in the story, and tell about the story of life in a common context. The purpose of theme is to give a shape and effect in our mind, so make the story to remember.

Theme must be related to other elements in a novel to build a good story, because frome theme story is developed. Elements in a novel is based on theme so it should be solid each other. Karl (1967:323) said, “Theme is a kind of composite statement which requires our comprehension of numerous other elements. The theme can not be anything you choose to make it. Every interpretation must be consistent with what the author has provided. If you defend a particular meaning that you feel deeply about, remember that it must coincide with every element of the story.

2.4 Plot

Yelland (1983) defines this plot by "a story or series of events. In other words, the plot is a story or sequence of events that regular and organized. Plots in this sense can be found in the novel rather than in a reasonable life. Life has a story, but the novel has a story and plot. As said by E.M. Forster, the story is a

(35)

narrative of events arranged in order of time, while the plot is the narration of events with emphasis on quality.

Plot is literary term defined as the events that make up a story, particulary as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story, or simply by coincidence. According to Robers and Jacobs (1993:52) says, “The plot is based on the interactions causes and effect as they as develop sequentially or chronologically.” It means that the plot is relation between causes and effects that develop into well organized. Plot is really related to the conflict. Plot will be organized if the causes and effect are connected to become the conflict.

Plot is series of stories. Abrams in Siswanto (2008:159) says, “that the plot is a series of stories that formed by the stage of events that weave a story presented by actors in a story. Goodman (2003:19) says, “The plot important even stahtaccour in a story, the narrator makes the plot.

The plot is a story that contains the sequence of events, but each event is only connected by cause and effect, and event which caused or led to other events.

Stanton (1965:14) says that the plot is a story that contains the sequence of events, but each incident was only connected in cause and effect, the events that caused one and also cause the occurrence of other events. Appearance of events for events that only based on the order of times is not necessarily a plot. To be a plot, the events must be processed and made creatively, so that the results of processing and making itself is something beautiful and interesting, particularly in relation to the relevant works of fiction as a whole.

(36)

2.5 Setting

Background related to elements that gives the impression of an abstract about the environment, both place and time, where the characters perform its role. This setting is usually realized by creating conditions that complement the story. Both in the dimension of time and place, a setting can be created from the place and time of imaginary or factual. And the most decisive for the success of setting, in addition to the description, is how novelist combine characters with background in which they carry out their role.

Taylor (1981:69) says that setting is major factor in the formulation of subject matter and directed influence on the expression theme. As in the case of the other factors, however, setting needs to be realistic, nor, in fact, even physical. Historical time (past, present or future) is very effective for certain narratives and an accurate geographical location advisable, but is also possible to set a fiction in some vague undertermined time, omitting historical references altogether in order to achieve a sense of timelessness and universality. Physical setting may be localizes in a particular and known place or an unspecified and unfamiliar region, depending on the author’s particular need.

Setting is background of story that describe place, time, and atmosphere in a novel. Abrams in Siswanto (2008:173) says, “Setting is general local, historical time, and social circumstance in every episode or part of place. But Hamalian in Siswanto (2008:149) says, “that setting in fiction not just place, time, event the atmosphere and objects in a particular environment, but also can be the

(37)

athmosphere related attitudes, way thingking, and lifestyle of a community in response to particular problem.

Hamalian (1967:59) stated the setting is not only a perticular time and a particular place, or a very substance of a region, but also how the people things, how the react, their prejudices, their insanities, and their lifestyle with all elements that related indirectly.

Conflict is dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot. Conflict has become a broad term in literary works and it now includes almost any problem the protagonist may have. It can encompass a struggle between the protagonist and another creature, obstacles society puts in the protagonist’s way, a battle againts nature, a mystery unraveled, or internal and emotional issues being solved.

Conflict is considered an important event which is a supporting element of the plot in the plot development. Nurgiyantoro (1995:122) says, “Conflict is something, refer to the action and retaliation.” It means conflict is something that is dramatic, referring to the struggle between two forces are balanced and suggest the action and counter action. Given the conflict of the plot will be more easily determined.

2.6 Point of view

Point of view is one of the elements of fiction that is classified as a means of story. Point of view in a work of fiction describes who is told, from a position where events and actions were seen or suggest in the way a story is told.

(38)

It is way or the view that the author used as a means to present the characters, action, background, and various events that make up the story.

In a work of fiction to the reader Abrahams (1981:42) says that Point of view is the way the author puts himself in the story or from the point which the author looked at the story.

According to Peck (1994:68) stated that Point of view is a technique that is used by author to find tell the meaning of his artistic work to readers. The author expects that the readers can accept his technique. Point of view has psychological connection to the readers, and readers need clear perception about the point of view. The readers understanding about the novel will be influenced by a clear point of view. Point of view is not only considered as the way dramatic limitation but also considered a serving the the thematic definition, because a novel offers values, attitude, and life perception which is controlled and served by the author intentionally through point of view.

Point of view is the way of author see the character, events, places, and time by his/her own style. Roberts and Jacobs (1995:180) says, “that point of view refers to the position and stance of the voice, or speaker, that authors adopt for their works. Kinds of point of view: narrator omniscient, narrator observer, narrator observer omniscient, narrator the third person omniscient.

(39)

I. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study

Literature is a body of written and valued as works of arts. Literature may be classified according to a variety of systems, including language, national origin, historical period, genre and subject matter. Roberts and Jacobs (1995:2) says, “Literature is classified into four genres : prose, fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction prose.” From the four genres, the writer decided to discuss the prose fiction, exactly on novel. Fiction is distinguished from the works it imitates, such as historical accounts, reports, biographies, autobiographies, letters, and personal memoirs and meditations.

Language cannot be separated with literature. We could say the language is the paper and the literature is the color pencil; it makes a communication beautifully. Taylor (1981:1) says that literature is just like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act of writer’s imagination of selecting, ordering, and interpreting life experience.

The writer chooses this novel because the story was very interesting which told about the love story with mystery and supernatural.

The supernatural (Medieval Latin: supernaturalis: supra “above” + naturalis “nature”, first used: 1520-30 AD) is that which is not subject to the laws of physics, or more figuratively, that which is said to exist above and beyond nature. In philosophy, popular culture and fiction, the supernatural is associated with the paranormal, religions and occultism. It has neoplatonicand medieval

(40)

scholastic origins. And unable to be explained by science or the laws of nature : of, relating to, or seeming to come from magic, a god, etc.

Mystery fiction is a genre of fiction usually involving a mysterious death or a crime to be solved. In a closed circle of suspects, each suspect must have a credible motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime. The central character must be a detective who eventually solves the mystery by logical deduction from facts fairly presented to the reader. Sometimes mystery books are nonfictional. "Mystery fiction" can be detective stories in which the emphasis is on the puzzle or suspense element and its logical solution such as a whodunit. Mystery fiction can be contrasted with hardboiled detective stories, which focus on action and gritty realism. Mystery fiction may involve a supernatural or thriller mystery where the solution does not have to be logical, and even no crime involved.

1.2 Problems of the study

The problem of the study are 1) What makes the Ig suspect?
