Previous Study Problem Statement Limitation of the Study Objective of the Study

Considering the explanation above, the writer is interested in analyzing Rob Marshall Memoirs of a Geisha movie by using humanistic psychological approach and entitles the research as follows: LOVE AND BELONGINGNESS NEEDS OF MAJOR CHARACTER IN MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA MOVIE: A HUMANISTIC SYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH

B. Previous Study

Before researcher analyses it, she has read other papers that are relevant with her analysis. First is a study movie version and novel of Arthur Golden’s researched by Fitria Wahyu Astuti, her research paper is entitled ”A Comparison Between Novel and Movie Version of Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of A Geisha: Structural Analysis Approach” the result is the similarities lie on the characters and characterization, setting, plot, and theme. Both the novel and the movie version have the similarity of major character, namely Sayuri Chiyo. The setting of place both the novel and the movie version is in Japan. Then the setting of time of both in occurs in 1929 until the end of World War II. And then the plot of both is using traditional plot that consist of the beginning, the middle, and an end. The theme of the novel and the movie version is everyone should struggle for getting the dream. The second is Ika Anggarawati with her research entitled”Anxiety in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha: Psychoanalytic Analysis Approach”. The result is about identifying the anxiety undergone by the major character using psychoanalytic approach. The previous study above show that the study of the movie version using humanistic psychological approach has not been found, so researcher is interested in completing the study of the movie using humanistic psychological approach.

C. Problem Statement

Based on the background of the research the writer proposes a problem statement. The problem of this research is: ”How are love and belonging need reflected in Memoirs of A Geisha Movie?”

D. Limitation of the Study

The limitation of the study in belongingness and love needs of the major character in Sayuris’s Chiyo Memoirs of A Geisha is viewed of Humanistic Psychological perspective.

E. Objective of the Study

Dealing with problem statement above, the objectives of the research are a follows: a. To analyze the structural elements of the movie b. To analyze the movie based on humanistic psychological approach.

F. Benefit of the Study
