1.5 Research Methods
Research method is defined as a systematic framework of structure and steps to guide and conduct a research. In order to get a systematic organization of the research, the
research method includes the following:
1.5.1 Data Source
The primary data in this study is taken from what came before he shot her novel by Elizabeth George about murder investigation which was published in 2007 by the writer’s
Division Headline, hodder headline. In this novel the main character was Joel Campbell following the supportive character, his brother and sister Glory, Vanessa, and Toby
Campbell asserts many utterances and this statement was said by them was the source of the data in doing this research. The form of the data are a written text.
“What came before he shot her” novel written by Elizabeth George, this story tell about a family that consist of brother and sister who lost their parents and their lives was
drained of care and affection, the Campbell kids rely just on their courage to survive in the world where cruelty is common place and protection comes at a price, eleven years old Joel
Campbell, who is the second children is about to learn that keeping his family safety means committing a great crime then the story begin as Joel Campbell and his brother Toby began
their journey to find a good home for them to live. In a bus ride they took from London route that move along Du Cane Road in East Acton his oldest sister Vanessa leave them
leave them because she want to find any job and she does not want to be disturbed by their brother and that leaves Joel to watch for Toby his brother.

The data is really relevant to this study because in the novel, the use of English taboo words is included in most of the statements which each has differents function and
meaning. Furthermore, the data were taken from the conversation in the novel that provided English taboo word.
1.5.2 Method and technique of collecting data
In this study, the method is included into library research and the data were limited only on the conversations that contain taboo word to make the writing not to be excessive.
There were some technique in collecting data through observation. The observation means that the researcher studies or observes a specific situation or type of situation and
observation was done through reading the novel and the observation will be supported by some techniques as note taking, listing, and identifying. Note taking means that there is no
participation of the researcher during the use of language; the researcher is only as the observer and was done while reading the whole contents of the story. Next Listing will be
done in order to Make a list of data is needed to make the identification easier to be done. After all the data were listed, then every taboo word was identified in order to find out the
meaning and function of every taboo words found in the novel.
