Richelle Mead is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy books for bot adults and teens. She is known for The Georggina Kincaid Series, Vampire Academy, and The Dark Swan Series. The Vampire Academy tells about the war between three races of vampire, living and undead. There are types of Moroi, Stigoi and Dhampir.

Moroi is a kind of pure-blooded vampire who can not live forever and brittle, meaning Moroi vampire could die. Strigoi is a vampire immortal, they can not die. They are killing machines that tell themselves for eternal life. Dhampir are creatures created from the marriage Moroi with human or Moroi with others Dhampir. For objective that is, schools like St.Vladimir Academy established in places hidden from human view and Strigoi. In this story, Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir and bodyguard for her bestfriend, Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi the noble family. There are twelve noble families of the Moroi, and Lissa Dragomir is the only surviving descendant, which makes it as the daughter of the Dragomir clan. Rose Hathaway, a 17-year old half-vampire, is training to be a bodyguard for living vampires and finds her life complicated by the dangers that involves, as

But not before Rose and Dimitri are put out of action in a highly original way, allowing Lissa to be kidnapped by someone very close to her. It is up to Rose to work out where she is, engineer her rescue, and try to block the evil designs of the mastermind behind everything.

The witer will discuss the murder and the three kind of vampires depiction in the novel. Lissa Dragomir is the only surviving descendant of Dragomir which makes it as the successor to the clan Dragomir princess. And it is making it as a target by Victor. Rose is a personal bodyguard who tried to save Lissa Dragomir but the official bodyguard of Lissa Dragomir is Dimitri Belikov.

2. REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE

Roberus and Jacobs (1987:2) say, “Lierature is classified into four genres: prose fiction, poetry, drama, and prose nonfiction.” From the four genres, the writter choosed to discuss that is the prose fiction, exactly on novel. Fiction is distinguished from the works it imitates, such as historical accounts, reports, biographies, autobiographies, letters, and personal memoirs and meditations.

Eagleton (1983:1) says, “There have been various attempts to define literature. You can define it, for example as “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction-writing which is not really true. But even the briefest reflection on what people commonly include under the heading of literature suggests that this will do.” Literature as imaginative writing is reflected from people thought, that is not really true. Eagleton (1983 : 9) also says “ Literature in the sense of a set of works of assured and unalterable value, distinguished by certain shared inherent properties, does not exist.” In other word, literature work has value of sense that can not be changed.

Peck and Coyle (1984 : 102) say, “Novel reflects a move away from an essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. “ In other word, they say that most novel are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves. Peck and Coyle (1986:102) say, “Most people are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves. Some of novels are fictions and some based on true stories.” The novels are entertained and also give meaning messages to the readers. It also can impress the readers.

(17)

Fananie (2000:6) says, “Literature is a fiction that are created based on emotion spontaneously capable of expressing the ability aspects of beauty are both based aspects of language and aspects of meaning.” This human capable of presenting creative ideas and life experiences with literary art form. The form of literary content of thoughts, feelings, experiences, ideas, beliefs and spirit of others.

Waston (1979:3) says, “Novel is the name of literary kind, and there is a story to tell about how, over the centuries, its substance has widened and its conventions changed.” It means that novel is literary work that narrate life story in centuries ago. Novels have significant elements: characters, plots, structures, and themes. Waston (1979:3) says, “A novel is a way learning about how things were or are cognitive instrument: and those who distruct stories as evidence should consider how often in conversation we use them to make ponits or answer question.” It means that we can learn about things were or are cognitive instrument from a novel.

Wellek and Warren (1971:3) says, “Literature is the mirror of human life that potrays human feeling, thought, imagination and perception which can be viewed based on personal judgment.” In other word, literature constitutes the imaginative act from the human’s imagination and interpreting life-experiences. Literature transforms and intensifies ordinary language, deviates systematically from everyday speech. Esten (1978:9) says, “Literature is literary or disclosure of the facts artistic and imaginative as a manifestation of human life. (and society)

(18)

thought languange as a medium and has a positive effect on human life (humanity).”

Steward (1989:618) says that the novel is a long essay in prose and contains a series of stories of one’s life with others around him to accentuate the character and nature of each actor.

Rostamaji (1990:124) says, “The novel is a literature that has two elements, namely: intrisrtic and extrinsic elements. Elements tahat are related because both are very effect in the presence of a piece of literature.

Gray (1984:140) says, “Novels are long prose fictions, including every kind of plot (tragic, comic), all styles and manners of dealing with their material (from the satiric to the rhapsodic) and showing a capacity to cover every imaginable subject matter from all points of view.” In other word, a novel is a long prose fiction almost always concentrating on character and incident, and usually containing a plot. The intrinsic elements are truly seen from the novel. Novel has some intrinsic elements, such as theme, plot, character, setting, point of view and style .

Definition of such killings is understood that the murder was not a crime classified whether done intentionally, or unintentionally and intentionally or semi. It means that nothing is exempt under criminal charges for criminal the assassination perpetrators. 3.THE ANALYSIS

3.1 The Murder

The murder that happened in this novel did by Victor, Natalie, and Dimitri. They are come from different clan. Victor Dashkov kidnapped Lissa Dragomir from dance party that held by St. Vladimir Academy. He ordered Kanneth to brought some people to kidnapping Lissa and injuring Christian. Kanneth brought Lissa to Victor. Rose was hit by magic formula from Victor’s necklace, it made Rose did not know what happened on Lissa. Victor brought lissa to the cottage. A guard pushed Lissa and locked her. Victor stopped Rose so that she did not know his plan. Rose was conscious from the magic formula. Rose could directly telephaty with Lissa and she told it to Dimitri. Dimitri and Rose chased them and then Victor asked Lissa to heal him from Sandovsky’s Syndrome that can kill him slowly. Lissa refused Victor’s demand but Victor kept insisted her. Lissa tought if Victor be a king, he would make Moroi and Strigoi fight each other.

Mead (2007:294) “You're the only way,” he said patiently. “The only way to cure this disease. I've been watching you for years, waiting until I was certain.”

Victor told Lissa that he had overseen her for two years. Victor was very amazed with Lissa’s skill and thought that only Lissa could heal his disease, Lissa refused Victor’s demand again. Victor already tired to persuade Lissa to heal him, he told Lissa about car accident that happened by Rose and Lissa’s family. Victor red all the reports about the accident and found evidance that Rose in that situation had serious injury and should died. Victor asked Lissa again to remember his age that only several weeks. Lissa would help Victor if he asked her

(20)

nicely. Victor’s disease did not the disease that could heal just like that. Victor should analyze how Lissa used her skill and how big it is.

Victor already found that Lissa has specialist in spirit. Spirit is the skill that can heal and make people alive back from the death such as plants, animals and also human. Spirit element rarely found in Moroi clan and many people forget that the spirit still exists. Lissa did not know that her skill was really special. Victor knew, Victor could not asked her nicely because he afraid that. Lissa forbidden to use her special skill, so that his intention known by St. Vladimir Academy. Victor said that many people thinks that it was not right thing to use the spirit because it meant they equal with God and would gave bad impact to the user because it would weaten their physie and also mental. This ease happened with Vladimir and Sonya Karps. Lissa surprised with all Victor said. Victor said that Lissa could not control her spirit skill and Mentor from academy would give her pill to kill her skill. Althougt Victor told all of his intention to Lissa but Lissa refused Victor’s demand. Victor gave small signal to Kanneth.

Mead (2007:301) Kenneth didn't stop with just the physical force of air. He also used it to affect her breathing. Sometimes he'd smother her with it; other times he'd take it all away and leave her gasping. After enduring all that firsthand—and it was bad enough secondhand—I felt pretty confident I would have done anything they wanted.

Lissa started felt ill, she screamed. Rose that has telephaty skill with Lissa could felt and know what happened with Lissa at the same time. Kanneth used his air spirit skill to hurt Lissa’s body and Rose also could felt it. Dimitri, who also with Rose in car, heard all Rose’s explanation about what happened with Lissa.

(21)

With all the pain that Lissa taken from Kanneth, finally Lissa gave up and obeyed Victor’s demand. With her weak body, Lissa tried to concentration and sent her magic to Victor. Lissa was slowly weaker and Victor was stronger. Victor’s apperiance was stronger without wrinkle from his face. Lissa was unconscious after felt tired. Rose, Dimitri and the guards arrived and arrenged the strategy and ready to scatter. Rose did not allow to enter and save lissa beacause it was too danger. Dimitri and the guards went through to forest when Rose lied on her car. Lissa’s view backs into Rose’s mind. Lissa lied on sofa and saw through window the guards who were watching her. Lissa was success to compulsion the guard to not stop her to ascaped from window.

Lissa surprised when Christian came approached her and asked about Lissa. She told that Lissa ran away from cottage. Rose and Christian went to chase Lissa. Christian injured and stopped to cathed up Rose because she was really fast. Rose continued her journey and heard Psi-hounds’ howl.

Mead (2007:306) Victor had said he hunted with them; he could control those beasts. I suddenly understood why no one at school recalled sending psi-hounds after Lissa and me in Chicago. The Academy hadn't arranged that; Victor had.

Rose met Lissa but they were surrounded by Psi-hounds. Psi-hounds was kind of wolf. Rose took a wood as her weapon to fight with hounds. Psi-hounds tried to clawed and bit Lissa but she was success to throw them to the ground. Psi-hounds tried to attack again but Christian came to helped them. Rose and Christian worked together to beat the Psi-hounds until Alberta came and shot the Psi-hounds by her gun. Rose, Lissa and Alberta approached Christian who had serious injury because of Psi-hounds’ attack.

(22)

Mead (2007:309) All three of us made our way over to it—Lissa and I practically crawling. When I saw it, I had to look away. My stomach lurched, and it took a lot of effort not to throw up. He wasn't dead yet, but I didn't think he had much longer. Lissa's eyes, wide and distraught, drank him in. Tentatively, she reached out toward him and then dropped her hand. “I can't,” she managed in a small voice. “I don't have the strength left.”

Lissa wanted to help Christian but she was also really weak so Rose gave her neck to bit by Lissa and sucked Rose’s blood so that Lissa gained her energy back. But after gave her blood, Rose was the one who unconscious and weaker. Lissa put her hand to Christian’s injury and tried to heal it. Christian opened his eyes and back alive again. Dimitri found them all and brought them back to academy.

Lissa accompanied Rose who lied down in academy’s clinic for two days. After went out from clinic, Rose tried to met Victor who was in prison. Rose demanded him an explanation what happened about him and Lissa. He told Rose that he would did everything to his populace. Suddenly, Natalie appeared from the corner side to helped Victor escaped from prison. Natalie approached Rose and threw Rose’s body to the wall. Natalie opened the cell for Victor and then back to Rose. She made Rose’s head hit the wall for several times until blood ran out from Rose’s mouth and nose.

Mead (2007:320) “My dear,” murmured Victor, “try not to kill her if you don't have to. We might be able to use her later.”

Natalie obeyed whatever Victor instructed to her. Natalie still watched Rose and desirous to killed her. Victor has changed his daughter turned to be Strigoi. Natalie attacked Rose again by threw her to the wall again. Then, Dimitri came to save Rose. Natalie ran away but Dimitri chased and followed her. Natalie

(23)

still could not use her power and Dimitri took this opportunity to attack her. He took out his silver dowel and stuck it exact on Natalie’s heart. Natalie screamed and fell down to the ground. Victor could catch again by the guards.

To test her power, he asked his daughter, Natalie, to kill the animals in various locations and over see if Lissa could really bring them back to life. Eventually, he kidnapped her and forced her to heal him while distracting Rose and Dimitri by creating a lust charm that made them lost their base instincts. He was caught and arrested the Academy’s prison but he convinced his own daughter to turn to be Strigoi so she could free him. He told Rose that he had a paln about revolution that would make him become a king. Mead (2007:318) “There are other ways of taking power. Sometimes it's necessary to go outside the established channels. The greatest and most powerful revolutions often start very quietly, hidden in the shadows.”

She dislikes being a part of the Academy's social crowd because it just involves too many head games and it tires her out. Lissa is very intelligent and works hard at her schoolwork. She dislikes that most Moroi are forced to go small colleges for their own protection, which is why she accepted the Queen's offer to attend Lehigh University. It is said that she has perfect grades.

Lissa has a special ability that spirit, she was thought to have not specialised at all, but the truth is revealed by Victor. Lissa is an excellent healer although using too much takes a mental toll on her. Her sensitivity makes her want to use her powers when she sees something hurt or killed. Interms of making her targeted. Spirit is an ability that can heal and revive plants that have died like animals and humans. She has a kind heart, usually tries to reach out to people and will go out of her way to make others feel included. She hates to see others in pain, especially people she cares about, which is the primary reason she wants to continue using spirit, because she loves the fact that she can use it to help people. She also has great love for animals, and despises seeing them in pain as well. Every time she uses her power it gives her depression. Which causes her to make cuts on her arm. She makes Rose Shadow-Kissed by bringing her back to life following the car crash which killed her.

Lissa has the ability to use her compulsion to an extraordinary extent. She sometimes uses too much compulsion to the point where it is very draining for her

(29)

and physically harms whoever she is compelling. She sometimes accidentally uses it, not realising her capabilities. She can also compel more than one person at once.

The second victim is Rose Hathaway. She is a guardian of Lissa Dragomir. Rose has very powerful protective instincts. Rose is extremely beautiful and has curves, with full breasts and rounded hips. She stands five-foot-seven, but is the shortest compared to her friends, which are mostly male given that most dhampir guardians and novices are males. She has thick, long dark brown hair that shines black in the right light, her mother's dark brown eyes, and her father's tanned skin, which she herself describes as being "the colour of the inside of an almond".

Rose was a reckless and impulsive person. She enjoyed partying, drinking and boys, often getting herself and others into trouble just for fun. In the first novel, she considered herself a novelty, as she was always pulling off crazy stunts and makes the wise crack for entertainment. Rose remains a social creature. She could be friendly, warm, not shying away from meeting new people, and has considerable skill in social interactions. Very much like Lissa, Rose has a certain charisma that attract people and make them flock to her, but there is still a significant difference in this charm: Lissa's allure stems from her royal refinement and intelligence while Rose's charm originates from her witty sense of humour, her sharp brilliance, and her formidable talent in Moroi protection. Rose can be very sarcastic and sharp-tongued at times. She always has a smartass comment ready whenever someone says something antagonistic to her, and always bites

(30)

back with a witty insult. She doesn't hesitate to speak her mind, and can be extremely stubborn in her opinions.

She cannot stand to sit back and see people get hurt, always trying to do something to help wherever possible, even if for a complete and total stranger. She is extraordinarily devoted to helping innocent people and protecting the Moroi. Rose always stands beside Lissa. Rose has a feature that she got from Lissa, after Lissa save his life. Rose could see what was going on and that is being experienced by Lissa. Capabilities of Rose called Shadow Kiss. That power is very rare and seldom found among the Dhampir, Rose could watch Lissa anytime without having to be near with her.

3.5 Vampire

There are some types of Vampire such as Moroi, Strigoi and Dhampir. They have different potray between these Vampires. Moroi are benevolent vampire. They are alive, mortal and born. Moroi can see, hear, taste and touch better than human. Moroi are very beautiful and their skin is described as being very pale. Their body is tall and slim. Moroi are much taller and slimmer than human. Due to their slim body, female Moroi in general have smaller breast and slimmer hips than their Dhampir. Moroi female are described as a supernatural beauty.

Most Moroi do not feel comfortable being under the sunlight, though they still can be there during the day time. Moroi are able to walk outside during the day, but the sun will make them weak. Moroi specializes in certain elements. They are strongest in weather such as earth, air, fire, water and spirit yet they have

(31)

low control all the elements. Moroi are able to control the mind of human, Dhampir and Moroi to certain degree. Spirit users are the strongest in this ability. Moroi’s abilities are weaker than Strigoi‘s abilities and Moroi are less strong than Dhampir.

Moroi can use magic and use Alchemist tattoo (golden flower). It is common for a Moroi to specialize in one of the elements such as earth, air, fire, water or spirit. Moroi also have a special ability called compulsion which is use to force their will onto their victim trough eye contact. Strigoi and spirit users have much stronger compulsion than the regular Moroi. Moroi are not allowed to use their abilities as offensive but only defensive. That is why they want Dhampir have guardiands to protect them. Though it is known that in the past Moroi used to fight alongside with their Dhampir guardians by using their ability both offensive and defensive. The users of water, fire, earth and air are drawing their powers from each element. Only spirit users are drawing their powers from their mind and body.

The Moroi can consume blood as well as normal food. They can survive on either, but blood is more important to them. The longest time a Moroi can survive without blood is two days, after that they will start getting weak. Signs that they are getting weak are their pale skin becoming even paler, has dark circle under their eye, and their strength begin to wane. Moroi do not have to kill human, unlike Strigoi, and take small bite to nourish themselves. Moroi find the blood from volunteers such as human and Dhampir.

(32)

The Moroi have a king and Queen who is chosen and elected from one of the twelve royal families. The oldest in the family gets the title of ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’. Royal Moroi are supposed to have at least two guardians.

Lissa Dragomir is the one of Moroi character in this novel. She is very friendly and compassionate. She has a kind heart. She usually tried to reach out people and will go out of her way to make other feel included. She hates to see others in pain, especially people see cares about, which is the primary reason she wants to continue using spirit. She loves the fact that she can use her spirit to help people. She also has great love for animals and hates seeing them in pain as well. Every time she uses her power, she become depression and cut her arms or harm herself.

Strigoi are vampires that distinguish from Moroi and many ways. They are undead, immortal, and are made as opposed to born. They can see, taste, touch and hear better than Moroi and Dhampir. The Strigoi’s skin is chalky with white and they have a red ring around their pupils. All Strigo have skin that will burn if place under the sunlight. Strigoi are stonger than Moroi and incredibly fast. They do not have any magic. A Strigoi’s thirst for blood is stronger then a moroi’s is for human blood, but can be satiated with Human, Dhampir or Moroi blood. Moroi’s blood however is what they truly crave and desire the most since it is Moroi’s blood that give them so much power.

They are no longer have a moral personality and while they now have immortality, their personality change into something vain, cruel and sadistic. Human, Dhampir and Moroi can be turn forcibly into Strigoi. There is one way to

(33)

forcibly make them to be Strigoi is if the Strigoi drink blood from their victim and then force them to drink Strigoi blood then they will become a Strigoi.

The way to willingly become Strigoi is by choice, but only the choice to the Moroi. If a Moroi purposefully kills another person while feeding, then that Moroi will turn to be Strigoi and lose their magical ability .There are only three ways to kill a Strigoi : A Silver Stake through the heart, decapitation, setting the Strigoi burn with deadly fire. There is only one known way to save a Strigoi from their evil, unnatural state. A Silver Stake must be charmed with air, earth, fire and water. Then, a spirit user must charm the stake with spirit. Being the only moroi that can “Create Life” with their magic, the moroi who charmed the stake with spirit must stake the strigoi right through that heart, just as a normal staking. But, instead of death, there is like reborn.

Natalie is the one of Strigoi character in this novel. She is a dull who not involved with social. She kills animals and leaves them for Lissa to heal. She is earth user element and she uses her power to harm Rose. She transformed herself into a Strigoi and kills the guard that is imprisoned. Her pupils on her eyes have red circle on that which indicate she is a Strigoi. On the Natalie’s lip, blood stain left behind. Her eyes are very cold, sharp like want to suck someone’s blood.

Dhampir are half-Moroi and half-human. They are trained to be guardian of the Moroi against a Strigoi. They are born through a Moroi and Moroi. Dhampir can see, hear smell, touch, and taste much more than human. Dhampir are able to go under sunlight, thus make them have tanned skin or darker skin color. Dhampirs can to leave during a day. Their physically look stronger in size.

(34)

Unlike Moroi, female Dhampir have round breast and rounded body. Dhampir have similar appearances with human, but they are look more attractive and beautiful in appearance. They are taller than humans and shorter than moroi. Dhampir are very shapely and sexy. They are very strong and powerful so that they can fight with Strigoi. Their strength is huge, they can raise beyond the triple weight of their own body. Their strength is greater than Moroi.

Dhampir are faster than human athletes because their run is invisible for human’s eyes but they are not as st as Moroi. Dhampir do not need to drink blood. They are able to eat any sort of food like human consumes everyday commonly. Dhampir can pregnant through a Moroi in a relationship. Female Dhampir can not produce through another Dhampir or even a human. This happen because the Dhampir want their race to stay near with the Moroi race so that they are able to reproduce a new Dhampir.

Rose is the one of Dhampir character in this novel. Rosemarie Hathaway was born in late March to her parents, Ibrahim Mazur, a Moroi Turkish mobster, and Janine Hathaway, an extremely prestigious guardian. Janine left Rose to the care of St. Vladimir's Academy at a young age. At the age of five, she started Kindergarten and met Moroi Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir. They became friends when Rose threw a text book at the teacher for forcing them both to write their long names, calling her a 'fascist bastard'. Throughout her high school years, she became famous for her 'smart ass' reputation. This was started by an incident in her ninth grade year, when she shoved Dawn Yarrow into a tree, causing Dawn to break several bones in her arm.

(35)

At age fifteen, the Dragomir family had brought Rose along with Lissa for their winter break. Eric Dragomir had been driving with Lissa's mother, Rhea, as well as her brother, Andre, Rose, and Lissa. The car had slid on the ice that had frozen to the road, causing the car to slam into a tree. The accident resulted in the deaths of Eric, Rhea, Andre, as well as Rose. Lissa had been able to use her healing abilities through spirit, and brought Rose back from the dead. This left Rose as one of the shadow-kissed.

She is a beautiful Dhampir and has curves with full breast and rounded hips. She has thick, long and brown hair that shines black under the sunlight. Rose is a reckless and implusive person. She has very powerful protective instincts. She can not stand and sit back when she see people gets hurt. She always tried to do something to help even if it is for a total stranger. She is extraordinarily devoted to help people and protects them.

SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL

Vampire Academy is the first book in the Vampire Academy series by the American author Richelle Mead. This book chronicles the life of 17-years-old Rose Hathaway, commonly known as Rose, a Dhampir and her Moroi bestfriend Lissa Dragomir after being brought back to their school St Vladimir’s Academy after being on the run for two years.

Guardian in training Rose Hathaway and royal Moroi princess Lissa Dragomir are forced back to their school, St. Vladimir's Academy, after running away two years ago. Upon their return, Guardian Dimitri Belikov, the leader of the guardians sent to track them down, is assigned to be Lissa's guardian. He offers to mentor Rose in extra classes, as he feels that she has potential and by working hard she can make up for the years she has lost. He also believes that Rose can be the ideal guardian for Lissa due to a rare, one-sided bond to Lissa which allows her to tap into the latter's emotions, thoughts and most importantly, her whereabouts. Rose agrees, conceding to the reality that this is the only way she will even have a chance to be appointed, on graduation, as Lissa's guardian.

Though they quickly fall into Academy life, they discover that Lissa has lost her social place among the elite Moroi, a consequence of Rose and Lissa running away. They decide to keep company with Lissa's cousin, Natalie Dashkov, who is the daughter of the frail and dying Victor Dashkov. On the very first day back, they find that another Moroi student, Mia Rinaldi, is dating Lissa's ex-boyfriend, Aaron, and that she holds a grudge against Lissa. By default, she

(40)

also dislikes Rose. Mia uses every opportunity to taunt Lissa, and is in turn insulted and threatened by Rose.

Lissa befriends Christian Ozera, a well-known Moroi who is negatively thought of due to his parents Lucas and Moira's reputation of becoming Strigoi willingly; this sparks worry from Rose who believes he is heading down the same path. It is also implied that Rose is jealous due to Lissa's interest in him, but Rose in turn starts falling for Dimitri. Things proceed to get worse after Lissa finds dead animals in her room and threatening letters written in blood. As a result, Lissa becomes depressed and engages in self-harm. It is also revealed that although Lissa still hasn't specialised in any of the four elements, she has a remarkable ability to heal, previously witnessed by Rose and Sonya Karp. They find out that Lissa has affinity for spirit, a rare element with negative side effects after use. This incident, coupled with her increasing depression, was what had caused Rose to run away with Lissa.

After Mia convinces Jesse and Ralf to spread the rumour that Rose slept with both of them and let them take her blood, Rose is regarded with a sense of horror. As revenge, Lissa uses compulsion to work her way back into her old group of friends, convincing them not to talk to Mia anymore. She eventually succeeds in winning Aaron back. Lissa also uses compulsion to convince people that Jesse and Ralf are lying. Rose later discovers from her friend, Mason, that Mia is from a very low class family and uses it against her.

During Sunday service, Rose hears that the saint, St. Vladimir, could heal people like Lissa and suffered from some form of depression. He was protected by

(41)

his loyal guardian, the "shadow-kissed" Anna with whom he shared a bond. On returning from a shopping trip with Lissa, Natalie and Victor, Rose has an accident; when she wakes up, she is stunned to see that has made a miraculous recovery but quickly deduces that Lissa used spirit to heal her. She reaches into her bond and discovers that Lissa is lying in the attic of the church, bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. Her reporting Lissa's dangerous behavior causes a fracture in their friendship. Lissa stops talking to Rose, believing she betrayed her, and so Rose loses all popularity she had gained.

Somehow discovering Lissa's depression, Mia tells everybody; this causes Rose to punch her and break her nose. Detained by teachers and guardians, Rose is unable to follow Lissa as she runs away in dismay. She reaches through the bond while confined to her room and finds that Christian is with her. He's knocked unconscious and Lissa is kidnapped by several guardians. Rose goes to tell Dimitri, but instead forgets upon seeing him and they end up almost making love. Dimitri takes a necklace from her: the one she received as a present from Victor. Rose suddenly remembers that Lissa is in danger when he throws it out the window. It is discovered that Victor infused it with a lust charm, causing them to act on their existing attraction.

Through the bond, Rose is able to lead a rescue party to Lissa's aid. She's forced to stay in the car whilst they go to storm the cabin. Rose sees Victor admit to Lissa that Natalie, acting upon his instruction, put the animals in her room and he intends to use her to heal him, as he is on the brink of death. He tells her that the bond she shares with Rose is because Rose died, but Lissa brought her back.

(42)

Rose discovers that Christian has stowed away in the car in an attempt to rescue Lissa himself. They run towards the cabin as Lissa compels a guard to stay silent as she escapes. Rose and Christian are confronted by psi-hounds and Christian's mauled to the brink of death. Lissa, unable to find the strength to heal him, is forced to drink Rose's blood and then is able to save him, upon doing so, realise she loves him.

Later, when Rose visits a locked up Victor, he confesses all about the lust charm and tells her that Dimitri lied when he said he felt nothing for her. Rose is confronted by Natalie, now Strigoi, who turned Strigoi in order to save Victor from his cell. Dimitri arrives and stakes her.

As Christian and Lissa begin dating and Mia regains her social status, Rose confronts Dimitri, demanding to know why he lied about his feelings. He tells her that he does love her but they can't be together, both because of the age difference and the fact that they will both be Lissa's guardians one day and must devote their attention to her; or else he would save Rose before her.
