Analysis In speech 3, Bella uses Negative Politeness Strategy NPS by minimizing the imposition. Bella does not want Edward to go back and rip the frat boys’ heads off but she understands he has his freedom of action. That’s why Bella just state her own idea of Edward’s idea rather than directly ask him not to do that. It is done to save Edward’s negative face. SCENE 60: EXT. WATERFALL RESTAURANT - FRONT ENTRANCE Jessica and Angela exit the restaurant as Bella approaches. 1. ANGELA: Where were you? We left you a message. 2. JESSICA: We waited, but we were starving -- Then they see Edward behind her, climbing out of his car. They freeze, agog. He’s composed now, making an effort to be charming. And they are charmed.

9. BELLA: debates, then decides I could eat. As he guides her off, the two girls share a look, and a noiseless scream of excitement. Analysis Edward starts the conversation by apologizing to the ladies, which is one of his efforts to be polite as noted in speech 3. According to Brown and Levinson’s theory 1987, apologize is one of negative politeness strategies. So, it is considered Edward uses NPS in this speech. In speech 6 Bella uses NPS when talking to all the hearers, i.e. Bella and her friends, Jessica and Angela. The speaker, Edward, wants to ask Bella to have a dinner with him. However he knows Bella has her own freedom of action. Besides that, Bella is being with her friends who are going to take her home with them. By using hedge like “maybe I should make sure Bella gets something to eat”, Edward wants to ask Bella’s friends not to take her home and also to ask Bella to stay and have a dinner with him. And he adds “if you’d like” specially aimed to Bella in order to minimize the imposition that could threat her negative face. She says “so” in order to seek the favor of the addressee. Favor seeking is one of the ways of Negative Politeness Strategy done. By using it, speaker can minimize the negative FTA that might appear. Edward uses BORS to Bella when requesting her not to go as noted in speech 11. He uses the clear and straight-to-the-point words. In speech 23, Edward uses ORIS to Bella by which he cannot be held have committed himself to one particular intent. By saying “I don’t have the strength to stay away from you anymore”, Edward has removed himself from the potential to be imposing. Bella as the hearer could interpret it as a statement and also indirectly an asking to Bella not to stay away from him. It can be considered Bella uses PPS in speech 24 for she shows her approval of the addressee, i.e. Edward. By showing her approval, Bella has made Edward feel good of himself which it means satisfying his positive face. Edward uses NPS to Bella when asking her to go home in speech 27.
