The Sutton Street Urban Fruit Garden project explores the interface between agriculture/ecology and new forms of activating public space. All cities have two footprints: the urban or constructed one and the ecological or natural one that extends beyond the urban, suburban and surrounding agricultural areas. As urban sprawl expands to consume agricultural land, that land in turn increasingly encroaches on sensitive wilderness ecosystems. Today, out of practical necessity and as a consequence of environmental imperatives, a new paradigm of local cultivation, integration and density is emerging. The idea of a new urban agriculture that is intertwined with the city’s fabric is under careful consideration by a host of professionals including architects, urban designers, landscape architects, biologists, scientists, agronomists, etc.

The limit between infrastructure and city is a space, an ‘extra-space’. It’s a territory inside the city with its own rules, directly connected to the neighbourhood’s local scale, but at the same time related to a railway system that works on a metropolitan, regional and national scale. If we look at this territory as a continuous system of spaces that can redefine the relation between infrastructure and city, it can become a basic resource for city transformation and development. INFRACITTÁ is a hybrid space where it’s possible to develop local resources and experiment with innovative instruments and practices in the search for a new relationship between city, nature, energy, mobility and communication on the metropolitan scale.

The Great Duke Street Digression is an architectural project that explores existing urban situations in order to develop a new type of social infrastructure. It essentially looks at how typological analysis and emotive (or human) analysis can be combined to produce

a specific architectural insertion. A network of small interventions was designed with the analysis and themes driving the designs. The designs were based on a temporary architecture that would accommodate the social functions for a number of years and – depending on the outcome – could be made

a more permanent feature. The designs were also planned in stages over a period of five years in order to phase in the change, potentially making changes to designs based on observations. Also, on a practical level, phasing the designs seemed more achievable.
