5. Pilot Testing

Pilot test was conducted to find out whether the test needs revision or not before the real test was administered. Since it was conducted in one class of academic year 2007, the result of pilot test may predict the research results.

6. Asking Permission from the Lecturer

This research was conducted in two classes. Therefore the researcher should have permission from the lecturer who teaches those classes. After that, the researcher consulted with the lecturer about the right time in conducting the test especially the date and time, whether it was conducted after class or before class.

7. Conducting the Test

After getting the permission from the lecturer, the researcher conducted the test. The test papers were distributed twenty five minutes before the class ended. The instruction was given in 5 minutes and the students were given twenty minutes to do the test. After twenty minutes, the test papers were collected.

8. Checking the Test Result

In this step, the researcher compared the answer key and the answers of the students. It was to find out which numbers were answered incorrectly and correctly 51

9. Analyzing the Data

In analyzing the data, the researcher classified the students’ score based on the academic regulation of Sanata Dharma University. If more than 50 of the samples applied a concept correctly in the test, it meant that the concept has been mastered.

10. Writing Up the Data Analysis

After analyzing the data, the researcher wrote a report based on the data analysis. 52

CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This research was conducted with the intention to find out the answers of three research problems: 1 What concepts of articles have the students mastered? , 2 What are the errors made by the students? , 3 What are the possible causes of errors? Therefore this chapter is divided into three parts based on those three research problems. The first part focuses on the students’ mastery on the use of articles. It explains the data of the students’ mastery on each concept of articles, which is in the form of variables. The second part discusses the errors made by the students, and the examples taken from the test. Meanwhile, the last part explains the possible causes of errors viewed from the interference of Indonesian language interlingual, and English language intralingual.

A. Students’ Mastery on The Use of Articles

This subchapter discusses the concepts of articles that the sixth semester students had and had not mastered based on the test result. The test was administered on 8 and 12 April 2010, with 53 students as the participants. It was divided into two parts. The first part required the participants to fill in 26 gaps comprised in 18 items with the appropriate articles. Meanwhile, in the second part, the students were requested to translate 28 Indonesian nouns into English adjusted to the context provided in each item, and then add appropriate articles for the nouns.
