ABSTRAK
Pengendalian plak secara kimiawi terbukti efektif dalam membantu
mengurangi pembentukan plak pada gigi. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk
mengetahui
efektifitas
larutan
daun
sirih
merah
terhadap
pencegahan
pembentukan plak pada gigi.
Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah eksperimental semu dengan design
cross-over dan sistem double blind. Sampel dipilih dari mahasiswi angkatan 2008
Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjadjaran secara purposive sampling
sebanyak 30 orang.. Subjek penelitian mendapatkan dua kali perlakuan yaitu
berkumur dengan larutan daun sirih merah atau berkumur dengan air mineral
sebanyak tiga kali sehari selama dua hari. Penilaian plak dilakukan pada hari
ketiga dengan menggunakan indeks plak Quigley dan Hein modifikasi dari
Turesky, Gilmore dan Glickman. Data yang diperoleh dianalisa secara statistik
dengan uji t tidak berpasangan.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa subjek penelitian yang berkumur
menggunakan larutan daun sirih merah, nilai plaknya lebih kecil, sedangkan
subjek penelitian yang berkumur dengan air mineral, nilai plaknya lebih tinggi.
Perhitungan secara statistik memberikan hasil bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang
signifikan antara berkumur dengan larutan daun sirih merah dan air mineral.
Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah berkumur dengan larutan daun sirih
merah efektif untuk mencegah pembentukan plak pada gigi.

ABSTRACT
Chemical plaque control has been proven effective to help descreasing
plaque growth. This research is conducted to find out the effectivity Pipper
crocatum leaf solution for controlling dental plaque.
The type of this research is a quasi-experimental research using the crossover design and the double blind system. The research sample consist of 30
female student of Faculty of Dentistry of Padjadjaran University, chosen by
purposive sampling. The research subject get treated two times, that is, rinsing
with Pipper crocatum leaf solution or rinsing with mineral water three times in
two days. Plaque is assessed using Quiqley and Hein Index-Modified by Turesky,
Gilmore and Glickman. The plaque is scoring on the third day. The data is being
analyzed by the t test independent.
Research results indicate that in the research subject rinsing with Pipper
crocatum leaf solution there is a descrease in plaque, whereas in research
subjects who rinsing with mineral water there is an increase in plaque. Statistical
calculations give the results that there are significant differences in plaque value
between rinsing with Pipper crocatum leaf solution and mineral water.
The conclusions of this research is that rinsing with Pipper crocatum leaf
solution effective to prevent dental plaque growth.
