Handling an Eight-Year Old Introvert Pupil at Kumon, Mekar Wangi in Teaching English.

ABSTRACT

Kenzie, seperti bercerita sebelum memulai tes.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study
In this term paper, I would like to discuss my internship experiences
as an assistant teacher at Kumon from June until Agustus 2012. I had
many experiences when I taught there. I met many children with
different characteristics, but I will discuss an introvert child named
Kenzie. Carl Jung says “Introvert refers to a person who is focused on
(often preoccupied) with his or her private mental experiences,
feelings, and thoughts.” However, there was a pupil called Kenzie, who
was an introvert. He tended to be quiet with new people and he often
sat alone. Whenever I taught him, I tried to ask him about his school or
his favorite games, but he just answered my questions briefly.
I had a problem in handling Kenzie, because it was the first time for
me to teach in the class and I never knew the characteristics of pupils,
especially an introvert child like Kenzie.

B. Identification of the Problem

The problems I am going to discuss in this term paper are:
1. Why can a pupil become introvert in class?
2. How does the pupil become an introvert child?
3. How should I handle an introvert pupil?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The objectives of the study are to find out the reasons why a pupil
becomes introvert, how does the pupil become an introvert child, and
how I should handle an introvert pupil.
The benefits of the study are as follows: first, as an assistant
teacher, I gained many experiences when I taught an introvert child.
Then, I learned several techniques to handle an introvert child.
Second, Kumon as a teaching learning institution will understand
pupil’s characteristics and know how to handle them. Third, readers
will know how to handle and teach an introvert child, and what steps to
take when they have a similar problem like mine. Finally, students who
intend to take a similar topic can know more about an introvert child
and how to handle him or her properly.

D. Description of the Institution
Kumon Mekar Wangi started on 1 July 2003. Kumon is located at
Mekarwangi 5a. The first subject was Math. On 1 July 2005, Kumon
had two subjects, Math and EE (English English). On 1 February 2007,
Kumon had three subjects, Math, EE and EFL (English Foreign
Language). The head department of Kumon is Susan Kartawidjaja.
Kumon is educating more or less 400 students with 25 employees
including the teachers. (Principal’s note)

E. Method of the Study
The data I use for my paper is the Principal’s note at Kumon, and my
observation of an introvert child named Kenzie at Kumon Mekar Wangi during
my internship. In addition, I make use of articles and books taken from the
Internet. Every day, I recorded my observation on my journal. Finally, I
analyze the characteristics of Kenzie.

F. Limitation of the Study
The subject for my research is Kenzie, an eight-year-old boy. He is a pupil
at Kumon, Mekar Wangi at level A. Kenzie is different from the other pupils

because he is an introvert pupil. In this term paper, I intend to analyze the
problem of handling Kenzie and suggest some solutions to solve the problem.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter I is Introduction, divided
into seven parts. They are Background of the Study, Identification of the
Problem, Objectives and Benefits of the Study, Description of the Institution,
Method of the Study, Limitation of the Study, and the last part is Organization
of the Term Paper. Chapter II is Problem Analysis. In this chapter, I describe
the problem, the causes and effects of my problem. Chapter III is Potential
Solutions. Potential Solutions give positive and negative effects related to the
solutions of my problem. And the last Chapter is Conclusion, in which I
summarize the term paper and propose the best solutions to handle an
introvert child. The last parts are the Bibliography and the Appendices.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

In this chapter, I would like to conclude that teaching an introvert child like
Kenzie is not easy. He is different from others, so I must understand him. I
have two causes and two effects of my problem in handling an introvert
student. The first cause is Kenzie felt shy when he met me as his new
teacher. The second cause is Kenzie tended to be quiet, while doing the
speaking and reading tests. Then, the first effect is Kenzie did not have any
friends, because he did not want to socialize with others. The second effect is
Kenzie had a poor performance in speaking and reading tests.
After I describe the causes and the effects, I have three potential solutions
to handle this problem. First, I will motivate Kenzie before the test by having a
friendly talk with him; for example, I ask him to share a story about his daily
activities at his school. Second, I give rewards to Kenzie like a sticker or
stamp for his tests. Third, I try to build his confidence with unfamiliar people,
especially with me as his new teacher.
As a conclusion, I will choose two solutions for handling an introvert child.
In my opinion, the first solution for handling him is to motivate him before the

13

test by having a friendly talk with him; for example, I ask him to share a story
about his daily activities at his school. By doing this or just sharing stories with
him, he feels more comfortable with me. As a result, he enjoys sharing stories
with me. The second solution is I will try to build his confidence with unfamiliar
people, especially with me as his new teacher. I choose this solution,
because I will be able to make him more confident to speak with new people.
In my opinion, an introvert child should be made more motivated in order
to do his exercises. Then, by telling short stories he will be more enthusiastic
to study English. In this way, it is easier for the teacher to make the pupils
closer to him or her. Then for the pupils, they will become more confident to
answer the questions in class or socialize with new people. Moreover, they
will not feel afraid of the teacher, because they are already familiar with the
teacher.
