CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. The Background of Study
Language is one of the most important and characteristic forms of human
behaviour . Human use language for communication and it shows their interaction
in environment which is their live. Communication is process whereby
information is enclosed in a package and is channeled and imparted by a senderto
receiver via some medium. People always want to interaction with other. Cause
communication can be strength fellowship by giving and demanding information
and things. Be communicating an individual forms relationships and associations
with others like family, friends, co-workers, church congregation, countrymen and
so on. Human beings use language in their daily life to make easy in
comunication. Cause language convey messages that including meaning. Before
we talk more about communication its better if we know the meaning of language.
Rahmah (2012:8) states that language as representation of world experience
means that it encodes our experience and thereby plays a crucial role in our
involment with other people and other things in this world. When we speak of the
language as representing the world events, or imaginary ones we are not ruling out
the probability that language itself has a central formative role in human
experience. Based on Systemic Functional Linguistic (Halliday, 1994), human
beings use language in order to fulfill three functions known as metafunction

1

2

namely: to represent, to exchange and to organize experience. Technically
metafunction are termed as ideational, interpersonal and textual function.
Interpersonal function is one of subdivision of metafunction which is use
as language to exchange experience. The interpersonal function is realize at two
levels namely level of (discourse) semantic and lexicogrammar which is termed
Mood. At the level of semantics human being perform two roles namely giving
and demanding. The commodity exchange may be either Information or Goods &
services (Saragih, 2013:18). When a speaker or writer gives you some
information, actually the want you to receive that information. And then when the
speaker or writer offer you some goods or services, automatic theywant you to
receive those gooods or services. Or if they demand information of you,
inherently they want you to give that information. And if they demand some
goods and services of you, actually they want you to give goods and services.
Information is one of important thing for human being. Information can
share from one to another and we also can get information from one person to
another. As the writer told you above that by communicating we can get
information about something that we do not know. There are so many ways to get
some information, one of them is by technology. Technology can communicate
faster, easier, and simplier. The kinds that we can use were television, radio,
telephone, mobile phone, internet, etc.

Television is one of ways to get

information, by watching we can know all of about these world. After watched the
television, we can search in internet about the movie that we have watched. Like

3

the movie that we have watched, we can take the script from the internet if we
want to know more about what was talked in that movie.
Script is about the written dialogue which is making in paper and we can
see the dialogue which is saying by the actors in that movie and we can take the
analysis of speech function that we would done. By seeing the script we can
decided which one question, statement, offer and command. And the writer think
it is interesting to analyze the speech funtion which was used by Lucy in Narnia’s
Script. Based on http://www.audioenglish.org/dictionary/script.htm, script is a
written version of a play or other dramatic composition; used in preparing for a
performance,or something written by hand.

B. The Problem of Study
Based on the background of the study, the problems of this study are
formulated as the following:
1. What kinds of speech function are used by Lucy in Narnia’s Script?
2. What kind of speech function is dominantly used by Lucy in Narnia’s
script?
3. In what context is the most dominant speech function used?

C. The Objective of Study
In relation to the problem, the objective are:
1. to describe the kinds of Speech Function which is used by Lucy in
Narnia’s Script.

4

2. to describe the kinds of Speech Function is dominantly used by Lucy in
Narnia’s Script.
3. to describe the reason for the use of the most dominant speech function.

D. The Scope of Study
The writer chooses dialogue of Lucy in Narnia’s Script as the object of her
study because there are so many dialogue in this script and the writer thinks that
there are also speech function in this movie script which are used by the players.
The writer also take this movie as the object because the story is interesting, as we
know if person who was like to something it would be easily to finish the work
because the person did it happily. There are four primary speech functions, they
are: statement, question, offer and command.

E. The Significance of Study
Findings of the

study are expected to be useful in theoretically and

practically. Theoretically, it is expected to be useful for expand the knowledge for
other students who are attracted in learning speech function.
Pratically , the findings potentially clarify speech function for student’s
learning language. Also potentially make the other reseracher want to find the
other problem that still related to speech function. For the teachers as a teaching
material and for the other researchers as inspiration to conduct a more in-depth
research in order to have a better knowledge in understanding the meaning and
message contains in a talk exchange.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion
After analysing the used of speech function in Lucy’s adventures in
Narnia’s script movie, the conclusion can be drawn as follows:
1. The four types of speech functions were applied in utterances of lucy in
Lucy’s adventures in narnia’s script movie. They were statements are
64%, questions are 15,43%, offers 5,14% and commands are 15,43%.
2. The most dominant type in the utterances by Lucy in Lucy’s adventures in
Narnia’s script movie is statement 64% with 112 clauses.
3. Statement as the dominant type occurs because of the context. The context
are field, tenor and mode. For field are (-) institutionalized and (-)
specialized. For tenor are (+) formal situation, (+) interpersonal and (+)
frequent. And the last mode are (+) planning.

B. Suggestion
Reffering to the result of this research , there are some suggestions as
follows:
1. This research can be reference for the students who want to analyze speech
function in script movie.
2. The students of English department can use this reseacrh to deepen their
knowledge about speech function.

38

39

3. The readers can also use this research to know how to use speech function
in daily conversation to avoid misunderstanding.
