STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE USE OF GOOGLE
TRANSLATE

ABSTRACT
There have been pros and cons towards the use of Google Translate in L2 learning
because it has both advantages and disadvantages. This paper aims to investigate
students’ attitudes towards the use of Google Translate in EFL context. This study
was conducted to 100 first and second year students of the English Language
Education Program of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana. A questionnaire was
used to measure the students’ behaviors, feelings, and beliefs based on their
experiences using Google Translate. The findings, overall, showed that most of
the students had fairly positive attitude towards the use of Google Translate for
getting word meanings and synonyms. They also believed that the use of Google
Translate may enchance their vocabulary knowledge. The majority of the students
also believed that Google Translate was a means of plagiarism. Many of the
participants also believed that using Google Translate too excessively could cause
laziness.
