CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Human beings are social being in nature. All people, moreover those who seem to be isolated, wish to be part of the society. After a few years with the family, individuals enter the society. The society has a great impact on the formation of people’s characteristics. People learn about code of ethics and social relationships from the society. People enter the society when they are ready and think that they need other people in society. Some of human’s needs could be satisfied only in the society.

Talking about society, human beings in this world cannot avoid from having conflicts, whether it is simple or complicated. According to Sigmund Freud:

Conflict is an opposition of two struggles between contestants. The component of conflicts might be ideas, wishes, impulses, and tendencies to respond the directions, instincts, emotion, and even perception. Conflict does not only happen in the conscious level, but also in the unconscious level. (Cited in Robert Dilts, 1997, para. 2)

Talking about conflict there must be conflict resolution which is related to human endeavor. Conflict will not be resolved if there is no endeavor in completing the problem or conflict. People who just hush oneself without doing anything to complete their conflict it seems as nothing. Like a proverb, “If there is a will, there is a way”. It means that there must be an endeavor to reach our

(12)

2 goal and find a resolution of a conflict. There are many ways to find and learn about conflict resolution such as in literary works.

Literature is a medium used by the author in conveying his idea and opinion to express his point of view towards life. Through literature the author could write the condition that happen around the society where he lives in. As Bennet and Royle (2004:35) stated, literature is the kind of writing which most persistently and most provocatively engages with the uncanny aspects of experience, thought and feeling. It means that literature is made of the form of sentence with impressive language and can touch human’s feeling.

According to Connolly (in Koesnosoebroto, 1988: 2) there are two kinds of literature, they are literature of knowledge and literature of imagination. Literature of knowledge presents or interprets facts, ideas, or happening; a description of a person or a place, the explanation of scientific process, the account of war, or the discussion of political issues. It can be said that literature of knowledge talks about everything that happened and related to facts of human life. It can be illustrated by strong evidences, so it gives significant effects to people.

On the other hand, literature of imagination interprets experience by factitious presentation of person, ideas, and events. It means that people have two ways in literature: they will get knowledge and get the values of their life. Furthermore, literary works can be classified into poetry, novel, short story, drama, and film. From explanation of the points above, it can be concluded that literature is able to lead people to feel or create a values, ideas, life experiences,

3 and the problems faced by humanity. Therefore, literature taught them to be able to feel what others feel. Many literary works also describe about the way and endeavor how to solve the conflict.

Human endeavor to solve a problem often occurs in literary works as can be found in the novel. A novel often illustrates the situation of the social condition in a certain time. Therefore, a novel can increase empathy feeling and tolerance in a society. It can make the readers know themselves through the figures or the characters in the story. My Sister’s Keeper tells about the struggling of a middle class family, named Fitzgerald with three different children. This novel takes place in Rhode Island, during 1990 – 2004. Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper is a novel which emphasizes the endeavor of the main character, Anna Fitzgerald, to fulfill her family desire to be an obedient daughter and how big her endeavor influences her life. The reasons of doing the endeavor also can be found in this novel.

Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper is chosen because Jodi Picoult writes the novel from the perspective of all characters. Each narrator speaks in first person which allows the reader to see the story from each narrator’s point of view. For example, Anna tells her own story that she has a psychological conflict because she wants to help her sister, Kate but she also wants to become more independent and get more attention from her family. It goes the same for the other character in order to give the illustration about how each of the character feels about the family problem in details. It also displays the emotion that the readers will not be able to see. When the author switches the narrator

(14)

4 from one character to the others characters, it helps to understand the deep emotion of one character. By making point of view of the story in the first person point of view, the story can allow the readers to understand the feelings and personal thought along with the main events.

Jodi Picoult’s novel is chosen because this novel tells about the different way of endeavor to be an obedient daughter. The endeavor to be obedient daughter that are done by the main character are clearly portrayed in this novel. Anna’s reasons to be an obedient daughter to and the effect in her life also become the concern.
