CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of study

Literature is one of important thing that people like to discuss in their life. It presents or interprets facts, idea or happenings as will as description of a person or place, the explanation of scientific process, the account of war, or the discussion of political issue. Therefore, human expression can be shown by using many ways depending on the point of view. When people read literature, people acquire a pleasure that never lost, but many people think that literature is something abstract to learn and difficult to understand. Human expression sometimes can be shown in literary works. The literary works are novel, drama and poem.

Koesnosoebroto (1988:2) has stated that, “ literature offers things in such a way as to refresh and encourage our own thinking, and so leads us to insight of our own”.

It means that literaly will give people opportunity to show their feeling. It describes the event that will happen in a society, what they experienced in their life or the fact.

Film is chosen as the subject of this thesis for some reasons. First, film gives people real entertaintment whether from the act supported by a lot of talented artists or from the background of the story with an amazing sound and visual effect thatcan make the story itself look even great. Second, mystery and dramatic conflict stated in

(12)

itusually leads the people to think what would happen next. Third, film gives people interesting scenario, such as life style, crime, state, beach, building, and also mountain. The last every creative film writer will give a different story that is always exciting to see.

In relation to this study, the film entitled “ Sex and the City 2” where the main character Carrie Bradshaw as an America traveller decided to go tothe United Arab Emiratesand found herself dealing with the etiquette shocks due to the different culture between those two countries

“Sex and The City 2” film is chosen in this thesis because there are some etiquette shocks faced by the main character. The writer analyzes Carrie Bradshaw’s etiquette shocks when shewent travelling to the United Arab Emirates.

Etiquette is the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life. It also means the custom of rules governing behaviour regarded as correct or acceptable in social or official life. (Merriam Webster, 2011)

Ettiquete usually reflects formulas of conduct in which society or tradition has invested. Etiquette may reflect an underlying ethical code, or may grow more as a fashion, as in eighteenth century Britain where apparently pointless acts like the manner in which a tea cupwas held become important as indicators of upper clas status. Maybe it is intotal reverse reflection of taboo. Ettiquete, aspect of decorum, is a code that governs the expectations of social behaviour, according to the contemporary conventional norm within a society, social class, or group. Usually unwritten, it may be codified in written form (Angel, 2008).

The writter chooses etiquette shock to conduct a study on literature, especially on “Sex and The City 2” because that movie was set in America and the United Arab Emirates as the background. The differences such as the environment and the culture cause the main character to have a life adaption. Moreover, the research about the etiquette shock in this movie can be used as a reference for further researches. Furthermore, the messages from this movie are useful to enrich our culture

1.2. Statements of Problem

After knowing the backkground of the study, the writer decides some problems necessary to be analyzed. The problems are these :

1. What was the etiquette shocked faced by Carrie Bradshaw in Michael Patrick King’s Film “ Sex and The City 2” ?

2. What were the effects of the etiquette shocked toward Carrie ? 3. How did Carrie overcome the etiquette shocks?

1.3.Purpose of these studies.

1. To understandthe etiquette shocks faced by Carrie Bradshaw in the Film. 2. To describe the impacts of the etiquette shocks faced by Carrie.

3. To explain Carrie’s way to solve the etiquette shocks.

1.4.Significant of Study

The writer hopes that the readers can understand more about the problem that usually happens in travelling, especially, about the etiquette shock that people will

find due to the different culture fromthat can be seen in the movie. The result of this study can be used as a reference in doing similar researches.

The scope of this study is culture shock in general, which is done by Carrie Bradshaw as the main character in Michael Patrick King’s Film “Sex and The City 2”. Meanwhile for the limitation of this analysis is culture shock which is done by Carrie with the impact and how to solve.
