Interviews RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
54 The selection of the teaching learning media affects the student’s
achievement. Thus, according to Brown et al. 1977: 2, the creative uses of the various media will increase the probability that your students will learn more,
retain better what they learn, and improve their performance. However, in applying a teaching media, the teacher should keep in herhis mind the students
characteristics and the learning objectives. To address the first formulated problem which is about the students’
perception on the use of Nicenet.org as teaching learning media, the writer refers to the data collected by the questionnaires. Based on the collected data, the
students are able to connect internet facility easily. This fact can be a supporting factor on the use of Nicenet.org as teaching learning media. However, although
the students are able to get and to access internet easily, they seldom browse Nicenet.org. Based on the questionnaire’s result number two, almost of the
respondents access Nicenet.org less than three times a week. It can be concluded that they do not try to get acquainted with Nicenet.org.
Joining Academic Essay Writing class is the first experience for almost of the students see table 4.1 number three in recognizing Nicenet.org as teaching
learning media. It influences their perception toward Nicenet.org. According to Altman et al., past experiences affects what someone perceives. By not knowing
Nicenet.org before, the students perceive it negatively. The result indicates that Nicenet.org is a new teaching learning media which needs to be developed in
order to be accepted by the students. It may be one factor affecting the students’ perception.
55 From the findings, especially, the result of questionnaire number five, the
writer concludes that Nicenet.org does not motivate significantly on the students’ behavior to accomplish their assignments, especially writing assignments,
whereas, motivation gives the effects on someone’s perception. What someone perceives is determined by personal motivation. As the result, the students’
perceptions tend to be negative. What makes the students feel not motivated can be caused by the use of Nicenet.org in the class. According to the confession of
the interviewees, at the beginning, Nicenet.org was implemented well. Afterwards, they think that the lecturer applies it as second priority teaching
learning media. The lecturer keeps using well printed assignments rather than their uploaded assignments. They feel that Nicenet.org is becoming useless. That
reasons determine the students’ motivation. It brings the impacts on the students’ feeling. They are not challenged
when their class employs Nicenet.org to conduct the teaching learning activity. According to Rowntree 1982: 168, a good media should engage the student’s
motivation. Referring to Rowntree, the writer concludes that Nicenet.org is a poor media in matter of engaging the students’ motivation. It is supported by the
findings see table 4.1 number seven. Surprisingly, according to the result of questionnaire number eight, the
students believe that Nicenet.org is able to help them improve their writing skill. More than half of respondents agree that Nicenet.org can train their skill in
writing. In Nicenet.org, the students are supposed to upload their works in the internet. By doing so, the students make their works visible for the other students
56 to read. The system obligates the students to be responsible with what they have
posted in Nicenet.org. Since it is readable for everyone, the students have to mind their works’ content, its grammar, its diction, even its punctuation thoroughly.
That reason may be the trigger in improving their English writing skill. Moreover, it avoids the crime in scientific literary scope, plagiarism.
Based on the questionnaire results, particularly number nine, the students believe in Nicenet.org as a beneficial teaching learning media. To recheck the
results, the writer puts the question implicitly in the interviews. A references media is one of the benefits of Nicenet.org. One of the interviewees stated that she
is able to read and analyze the others works uploaded in the Nicenet.org without knowing the authors. It can not be found on the printed works.
Even though the students agree that Nicenet.org is profitable, the students’ satisfaction level of the use of Nicenet.org as teaching learning media is low refer
to table 4.1. Almost of the students are not satisfied of the use of Nicenet.org. The result indicates that the use of Nicenet.org has not been maximized. Referring
to the previous facts, the use of Nicenet.org is still in progress and developed as teaching learning media, especially in English Language Education Study
Program ELESP. Therefore, in this study, the suggestions coming from ELESP’s students are required. Their suggestions are explored in the second
problem formulation. To know the students’ perception tendency on the use Nicenet.org, the
mean score is needed. Having been counted, the mean of total responses is required. The mean score is 2.3 of 4. The writer classifies it into medium
57 perception. It means that some of the students perceive Nicenet.org as a
beneficial, interesting, and effective media. However, there are some students perceive negatively.
Nicenet.org is a kind of internet assistant for the class room activity. According to the lecturer’s answer in the interview, the teachers will be helped
much in having students’ assignments. The lecturer considers that Nicenet.org as a good media and it will be one way or solution for teacher to help student more
outside the class. The lecturer’s perception is supported by the students’ thoughts about Nicenet.org which most of the students considers that Nicenet.org is an
interesting and good media. Nonetheless, the reason underlying the negative students’ perception is the implementation in the class itself. Concerning on the
confession of the interviewees, the implementation can be the major factor affecting the students’ perception. Thus, to develop the use of Nicenet.org, some
possible suggestions must be drawn. The suggestions are collected from the students who are dealing with Nicenet.org directly.
To draw the possible suggestions which are also to answer the second problem formulation, the writer analyzes and concludes from the data gathered by
the questionnaires and the interviews. Those suggestions summarized by the writer are:
1. Apply Nicenet.org effectively. In the Nicenet.org implementation, the lecturer should apply Nicenet.org
on hisher teaching process effectively. Referring to the interview results, the writer concludes that in the progress of class activity, sometimes, the lecturer does
