Background
• Every day, millions of computer
users share files online. Whether it
is music, games, or software, filesharing can give people access to a
wealth of information.
• To share files through a P2P
network à download special
software that connects your
computer to other computers
running the same software.
• Millions of users could be connected
to each other through this software
at one time.
• The software (often) is free.
Definition
• General view à Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing
allows users to share files online through an informal
network of computers running the same software.
• Carman Carmack à Peer-to-peer file sharing is the
distribution and sharing of digital media using peerto-peer (P2P) networking technology. P2P file
sharing allows users to access media files such as
books, music, movies, and games using a P2P
software program that searches for other connected
computers on a P2P network to locate the desired
content
• File-sharing can give you access
to a wealth of information, but it
also has a number of risks.
• You could download copyrightprotected material, pornography,
or viruses without meaning to
(bundled-spyware)
• Or you could mistakenly allow
other people to copy files you
don't mean to share.
The Risks of P2P File Sharing

confidential information
• Identity theft
• Violates consumer confidence à
consumer protection
• Threatening national security???
• bundled spyware and
viruses downloaded from the
network
• Threatening creative industries
