The Difficulty in Managing Students Who Are Also My Friends At Saint Mary 1 Senior High School.

ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Class management is an important thing for teachers. In fact, teachers’
skills in managing a class will affect the process of teaching and learning
between the teachers and their students. Richards states that class
management is “the ways in which student behavior, movement, and
interaction during a lesson are organized and controlled by the teacher to
enable teaching to take place most effectively” (qtd. in Sturt par. 1). According
to the theory above, if teachers can maintain a student’s good behavior,
movement, and interaction in a classroom, the teaching and learning process
will run smoothly, and teachers can also minimize the problems in the
teaching and learning process. Capability of managing the class is an
important thing for teachers, since the lack of it will lead to students’
indisciplined behavior, and it will affect the teachers’ effectiveness in the
teaching and learning process.

The reason why I choose this problem is because I am an inexperienced
teacher, therefore I found difficulty in managing my students who are also my

friends in the eleventh and twelfth grades in Saint Mary 1 Senior High School.
A positive learning environment is what I believe that teachers should be able
to create. To create it, as a teacher, I need to learn and understand better
about class management. When I was doing my internship at Saint Mary 1
Senior High School, I found several problems in managing the class that I
taught. Mostly, I had to teach the students who have already known me.
Several of them did not respect me as their teacher. Some of them even
underestimated me. I think that is because I could not manage the class well.
If I could manage the class, this problem would not happen. Therefore, in this
term paper, I will discuss how to resolve the problem of difficulty of managing
a class that I had during my internship by analyzing the problem and its
potential solutions.

B. Identification of the Problem
In this discussion of class management, the problem will be analyzed to
find the answers to the following questions:
1.

Why is it difficult for me to manage class of students in the eleventh
and twelfth grades in Saint Mary 1 Senior High School?

2.

How should I manage the class in which the students are also my
friends?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The goal of this study is to find the best solution to overcome the difficulty
in managing a class that I faced during my internship at Saint Mary Senior
High School. The benefits of this study for the teachers of Saint Mary 1 Senior
High School is that they can know characteristics of their students better
when they have different teachers, and they know how to manage them. For
the readers of this term paper, they will get new knowledge about class
management which is going to be useful when they want to be a teacher.
Last, for me as the writer, this term paper will be useful to find the best
solution to cope with a similar problem in my next teaching experience when I
teach at the same school.

D. Description of the Institution
The dedication of Yayasan Salib Suci in the education area is one thing
that cannot be doubted. This Roman Catholic institution, which was founded
in 1966, has built many schools in West Java, from kindergartens, elementary
schools, junior high schools, to senior high schools. Saint Mary 1 Senior High
School is one of the schools that stands under Yayasan Salib Suci. The
founders are Mr. Wanidjar, Mr. Tri Hartanto, and Mr. Martinus Sinabarib. They
thought it was important to build Saint Mary 1 Senior High School as a school

that could provide an education based on Roman Catholic principles of
education.
Saint Mary 1 started in 1967. The students studied in the building of
Providentia Junior High School (now Saint Ursula Junior High School) in the
afternoon. The first headmistress was a Netherland nun named Sr. CMA. V.
Well. Osu. It was because of her that Saint Mary 1 moved to a new building at
Jalan Bengawan no. 6 Bandung. This has been the school’s location ever
since.
From 1967 to 2009, Saint Mary 1 Senior High School has undergone
many changes in its building, technology, and curriculum. Now, Saint Mary 1
has applied the method of study based on e-learning. The use of English
language is also applied. For example, every time they want to enter the
teachers’ room, they have to ask for permission in English. Besides having
good facilities and curriculum, this school has proved itself as one of the most
favorite schools in Bandung with their many achievements, in the academic
and non-academic fields.

E. Method of the Study
The process of collecting the data for this study is by using two major
methods. The first is by observing the students during my internship. The
observation is recorded in the internship journal. Then, the second method is
by doing library research, both from printed and electronic sources.

F. Limitation of the Study
In this term paper, the subject of my study is the eleventh and twelfth
grade students of Saint Mary 1 Senior High School. The time of observation is
during my internship period from July to August 2009, over twenty days.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
The first chapter of this term paper will explain the reasons for choosing
the topic, problem identifications, objectives and benefits, description of the
institution, and also the method and limitation of the study. The second
chapter will discuss the problem that I analyze and also the causes and
effects of the problem. The third chapter is about the potential solutions to the
problem, with their potential negative effects and potential positive effects.
The analysis in the second and third chapters will be supported also by
relevant theories. The last chapter, which is Chapter Four, is the conclusion of
this term paper, which will explain the chosen solution. This chapter will also
answer the questions in the “Identification of the Problem”. The Bibliography
of the sources used will be given at the end of this term paper.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

In the previous chapter, I have discussed the causes and effects of my
problem, which is the difficulty in managing a class in which some of the
students are my friends. The causes of this problem are I was too close with
the students as their friends; several of them were even my friends when I
was a student there so they knew my bad habits, and several students in the
class often shared their life story with me. The problem affected the process
of teaching and learning. I was not being respected by the students. Several
of them ignored me. Many of the students asked me to manipulate their
marks. It also made me unable to give clear instructions to the class. I have
also analyzed several potential solutions that would be suitable to solve this
problem, with their positive and negative potential effects.
After I analyzed each potential solution and potential positive and negative
effects of each solutions, I choose the combination of the second and the
third potential solution as the best solutions. To solve my problem, I have to
talk first to the students outside the class at the beginning of the semester

17

Universitas Kristen Maranatha

that I need them to understand my position, then I also have to be more
relaxed in teaching and not be too strict with the students.
I do not choose the first potential solution, which is I have to be strict and
disciplined with the students, because I think I will not enjoy the teaching and
learning process. Besides, I will be too nervous to teach the students. I also
will not choose only the second potential solution, which is talking to the
students outside the class and asking them to understand my position,
because it will be useless if the students can understand me but I am not able
to manage the class well. There is also a disadvantage if the third potential
solution stands alone. Maybe I can manage the class well, but I will lose
respect from my students.
That is why I choose the combination of the second and the third potential
solutions to solve my problem. I choose them as my solution because I think
these are the most suitable solutions for my problem. These solutions can
make me concentrate better on teaching and I still can have fun while
teaching. After talking to the students that I am going to teach them and ask
for their understanding about my role in the classroom, I do not have to be
worried about the students’ opinion about me teaching them. Then, without
having to be strict all the time, I still can improvise the way of teaching and
still can have fun with the students in my class.
I still need to pay attention to several potential negative effects that might
arise when I apply the potential solutions. If these combined solutions are
18

Universitas Kristen Maranatha

applied, the students may still not understand my position as a teacher and
make a distance from me, also I can lose the respect from the students and
lose my concentration in teaching. To anticipate the effects, I still need to set
rules for teaching, apply them to all of my students and also be consistent
with the rules myself. I also need to prepare a lesson plan before hand so that
I can anticipate any problems that may arise.
