INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Analysis

Language is the best means of communication to interact among people and to create a good relationship between them in society. Without language, they will not able to express and share their ideas, thoughts, feelings, stories, experiences, etc that is really needed to build a good relationship in life.

In this world, every country has its own language or languages. But, they cannot use their own languages if they are in another country where their language is not understood. For example, generally Indonesian people cannot use Indonesian language when they are in German or other countries that do not understand Indonesian language. They should use a language that is understood by each. It is English. English is an international language that is used as a standard language in international level. Therefore, in order to create a relationship internationally, they have to use English.

In Indonesia, English has been learnt from Kindergarten, Primary School, Junior High School, Senior High School, until University. However, still many people who have not been able to use English because English is so difficult to be learnt and understood. One of the difficult parts to be learnt is grammar because it creates some words to become a good sentence, paragraph, etc.

One of grammatical components is part of speech. Fries (1957: 65) classified the part of speech into eight parts, they are, noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. According to Collin (1993:28) pronoun makes statements less repetitive while showing how the subjects and objects of a clause or a

(7)

series of clauses are connected. And he divided the pronouns into eight types; personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, reflexive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, indefinite pronouns, reciprocal pronouns, relative pronouns, and interrogative pronouns.

A personal pronoun is an important type of pronouns because it is used to point human beings, things, and animals that we are talking about. When we use language both in speaking and writing, we do not need to repeat a noun that is mentioned. For example, Anna is my friend. Anna is very clever. We do not need to repeat the word “Anna” to continue our statement. We should use the word “She” to change “Anna”. “She” is one of personal pronouns to replace “Anna” who is a female (third singular person). So, it is better; Anna is my friend. She is very clever so that it does not appear a redundancy.

Sekolah Dasar Negeri No. 101878 is one of the government schools which is located in Jalan Batang Kuis Tg. Morawa. English is one of the subjects that should be learnt in this school from the second up to the sixth grade. It is once a week for each class. And the time is about 2 x 35 minutes for one meeting. The curriculum of the sixth class based on KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan) where the students should learn Personal Pronouns, Preposition, Dates, Articles, May and Would, Much and Many, Singular and Plural, Yes/No Questions, and Question Words in a year.

Based on my experience in teaching my students at SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa, I find out a problem that the students have difficulty to change the combination between She and I, The boys, and He and She. They are confused which one they should use. That’s why I want to describe and analyze the students’ ability in using personal pronouns at SDN. No. 101878 Tg. Morawa.

(8)

1.2. Problem of the Analysis

Based on the description above, the problem of this research is stated in the form of question below:

“To what extend are the sixth year students in SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa able to use personal pronouns?”

1.3. Objective of the Analysis

The objective of this research is to find out to what extend the sixth year students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa are able to use personal pronouns in sentences.

1.4. Significance of the Analysis

This research is a study on students’ ability in using personal pronouns. It has much positive significance not only for the students, but also for the English teachers in their attempts to improve their teaching and learning techniques of English grammar, especially personal pronouns. Specifically, the significance of this research are stated as follow:

1. It is expected that the result of this research can provide some valuable and useful information about the students’ ability in using personal pronouns for the English teachers so that the teachers can more motivate their students to improve their ability in using personal pronouns.

2. It is also expected that the thesis can be a reference for the other researchers who are interested to research about personal pronouns deeply.

(9)

1.5. Scope of the Analysis

The scope of this analysis is on the ability of the students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa in using personal pronouns as subject and object.

1.6. Method of the Analysis

In writing this thesis, I use two kinds of research, namely: library and field research. In the library research, I collect and read some books and thesis which relate to this topic. Meanwhile, in the field research, I use two methods: descriptive qualitative and quantitative. In collecting the data, I use descriptive qualitative method by giving the students a written test in the multiple-choice form on personal pronouns. Djajasudarma (1993:8) stated that descriptive qualitative method is a method that is used to describe the data systematically and accurately. This research does not stop only in collecting and examining the data, but also analyzing it in order to get a conclusion about the sixth year students’ ability of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa in using personal pronouns. And I use descriptive quantitative method to reach it. Hadjar (1996:32) sated that quantitative approach presents the result in description of number.

1.6.1. Population and Sample

The population of this research is the 2007/ 2008 sixth year students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa. There are three classes altogether and each class consists of 40 students. So, there are 120 students of the sixth class.

Realizing that the numbers are great enough and I will face some difficulties, especially the energy, time, and fund, so I set 25 % of them from each class to become

(10)

the respondents so that the conclusion of that test is accurate. The reason for taking this number based on Arikunto’s idea (1993:120) says that if the population consists of a large number (more than 100), the sample can be taken from 10 % - 15 % or 20 % - 25 % or more, it depends on the ability of the researcher by considering her energy, time, and funds.

The sample is 25 % of the whole students from each class, they are, 25 x 40 100

students = 10 students. Therefore, the number of the students who will be the respondents are 3 classes x 10 students = 30 students. It means that the percentage of the sample is 30 x 100 % = 25%.

120

And in this research, I use random sampling technique considering what Gay (1987:104) says that random sampling is the best single way to obtain a representative sample. The population has the same chance to become a respondent. It is presented by giving the paper to the students. The students who get the paper with the word “congratulation” are the respondents.

1.7. Review of Related Literature

In writing this thesis, I use some thesis that concern to this topic in order to support and make it better. Some of them are mentioned as follows:

Das Suryani br. Purba (2007) in her thesis “A Contrastive Analysis of Personal Pronoun Between English and Batak Karo Language” concluded:

(11)

a. There are some correspondences and non-correspondences of Personal Pronoun between English and Batak Karo language. The correspondences are in the form of personal pronoun indicating person (first person and third person), indicating number, in the function of personal pronoun. While the non-correspondences are in the form of indicating person (second person) and indicating gender.

b. In English, personal pronoun indicating third singular person is identified by genders he for masculine, she for feminine, and it for neutral. While in Batak Karo language there is no differentiation of using personal pronoun indicating third singular person. Ia for both masculine and feminine.

Suzana Julisty (2005) in her thesis “The Use of Second Personal Pronouns in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare” concluded that:

a. The ungrammatical things of “thou” are: to indicate family relationship, to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate abstract object, to indicate the difference of age, and to indicate the difference of social status.

b. The ungrammatical things of “thee” are: to indicate family relationship, to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate the difference of age, and to indicate the difference of social status.

c. The ungrammatical things of “thy/ thine” are: to indicate family relationship (thy), to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate abstract object (thy), and to indicate the difference of social status.

d. The ungrammatical things of “ye” are: to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate the difference of social status.

(12)

e. The ungrammatical things of “you” are: to indicate family relationship, to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate the difference of age, and to indicate the difference of social status.

f. The ungrammatical things of “your/yours” are: to indicate family relationship, to indicate familiarity or intimacy, to indicate the difference of age (your), and to indicate he difference of social status (your).

Tapiomas Saragih (2004) in her thesis “ A Study on the Ability of the Second Year Students of SLTPN 1 Pekanbaru in Identifying the references of Personal Pronouns” found that:

1. Out of 39 students in her research, none of the students have very good level; 12 students have good level (30,7%), 24 students have average level (61,5%), and 3 students have poor level (7,7%).

2. The total score of the whole students in identifying the references of personal pronouns is 2026. It means that the mean score of the students is 51,95. It falls to average level.

3. Based on the result of the research data analysis and the writer’s statement in chapter 1, this prediction has been proved that the second year students’ of SLTPN 1 Pekanbaru have difficulties in identifying the references of personal pronouns.

4. According to the presentation of the research data that the mean score of the students’ ability in identifying the references of personal pronouns as subject is 53,8 which falls into average level, the mean score of the students’ ability in identifying the references of personal pronouns as object is 66,36 which falls into

(13)

good level and the mean score of students’ ability in identifying the references of personal pronouns as possessive adjective is 43,7 which falls into average level.

(14)

2.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PERSONAL PRONOUNS

2.1. Definition of Personal Pronouns

Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary (1995:307) defines that personal pronouns is pronoun I, she, you, etc.

Michael Swan (1995:424) says that personal pronouns are used when it is not necessary to use or repeat more exact noun phrases. He (1995:430) also states that the words I, me, you, he, him, she, her, it, we, us, they, and them are usually called ‘personal pronouns’.

According to Harper Collin (1993:29), “Personal pronouns is a group of pronouns such as ‘I’, ‘you’, and ‘me’, used to refer back to the people or things you are talking about”. And he adds that you use personal pronouns to refer to yourself, the people you are talking to, or the people or things you are talking about.

Homer C. House and Susan E. Harman (1950: 46) defines that a personal pronoun is one which distinguishes (1) the speaker, (2) the person or thing spoken to, and (3) the person or thing spoken of (that is, the person or thing not speaking or spoken to). These are called first, second, and third persons respectively.

2.2. Forms of Personal Pronouns

Langan (2003:199) states, “A pronoun must agree in number with the word or words it replaces. If the word a pronoun refers to is singular, the pronoun must be singular; if the word plural, the pronoun must be plural”.

(15)

Personal pronouns are classified into 2 forms: a. Singular form, and

b. Plural form.

2.2.1. Singular Form

Singular form consists of 3 types: a. 1st singular person such as I and me b. 2nd singular person such as you and you

c. 3rd singular person such as he, she, it, him, her, and it

2.2.2. Plural Form

Plural form consists of 3 types: a. 1st plural person such as we and us b. 2nd plural person such as you and you c. 3rd plural person such as they and them

2.3. Functions of Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns have 2 functions, they are: 1. Personal pronouns as a subject, and

(16)

2.3.1. Personal Pronouns as a Subject

Subject pronouns are used to refer to the subject of verbs. They are:

a. Singular form: I (first singular person), you (second singular person), and he, she, it (third singular person).

b. Plural form: we (first plural person), you (second plural person), and they (third plural person).

Here is table of personal pronouns as subject:

Singular Plural

1st person I We

2nd person You

3rd person He

She It

They

“I” refers to yourself. “I” is always written with a capital letter. For examples:

- I am a student.

- I do not like the movie. - I am reading a magazine now. - May I borrow your pen? - I went shopping yesterday.

(17)

“You” refers to the person or people you are talking to. The same word is used for the singular and plural.

“You” is also used especially in spoken English to refer to people in general, rather than you are talking or writing to.

For examples:

- Do you have a ruler?

- All of you have to come to my party. - You should do the test very well. - Would you have a drink?

- Why do you take his money?

“He” refers to a male (a man and a boy). For examples:

-

Alan is my classmate. He is a clever boy. - How many houses have he?

- Does he your uncle? - Where does he live? - He spent lots of money.

“She” refers to a female (a woman or a girl). For examples:

- Mary came in. She was a good looking woman. - She is my mother.

(18)

- Why did she come late? - Is she sick?

- Does she want to go with us?

“It” refers to anything that is not a male or female, for example: an object, fruit, place, or organization or something abstract.

“It “ is often used to an animal when its gender is not considered to be important, some people also refer to babies in this way.

“It” is also used in general statement, for example to refer to situation, the time, the date, or the weather.

For examples:

- I read a book. It is a good book. - Apple is good for us. It has vitamin A.

- Have you been to London? Yes, it is very crowded. - It is February 15th.

- It is so cold. - It is five o’clock. - It is very quiet here.

- The bear came at Patrick. It had thick fur.

“We” refers to the group of people which is includes yourself and also to the people you are talking to.

(19)

- Where will we go next week? - We are there.

- We must obey our parents.

- When will we finish this homework? - We do not recognize her.

“They” refers to a group of things, or to a group of people not including yourself or the person you are talking to.

For examples:

- They are in the club.

- They were playing football yesterday. - Will they forgive me?

- When they will return those books? - Are they your friends?

2.3.2. Personal Pronouns as an Object

Object pronouns refer to the same sets of people or thing as the corresponding subject pronouns. They are:

a. Singular form: me (first singular person), you (second singular person), him, her, it (third singular person).

b. Plural form: us (first plural person), you (second plural person), them (third plural person).

(20)

Here is a table of personal pronouns as object:

Singular Plural

1st person Me Us

2nd person You

3rd person Him

Her It

Them

Position of object pronouns in a clause:

1. Object pronouns are used as the object of verbs. For examples:

- Nika chose me. - He likes you.

- A man gave him a car. - I saw her.

- Stephanie hated it.

- They asked us to come to the party. - He would give them some money.

2. Object pronouns are used as the object of prepositions. Prepositions are connecting words likes for, at, about, to, before, by, with, near, after, of, etc. For examples:

- He went to the beach with me.

(21)

- We were all sitting in a café with him. - I live near her.

- I bought a ball for them. - Don’t mention UFO’s to us.

- The cat was hungry. I gave the fish for it.

3. Object pronouns can also be used after forms of verbs be or link verbs. Forms of be are am, are, is, was, were, has been, have been, may be, and others.

For examples: - It was me. - It is her.

- It may be them. - It is him.

However, in formal or written English, people sometimes use a subject pronoun after a link verb or verbs be.

For examples: - It was I. - It is she.

- It may be they. - It is he.

RESEARCH METHOD

3.1. The Location of the Research

This research is conducted at SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa, Jln. Batang Kuis Tg. Morawa.

3.2. The Population and Sample

Gay (1987:102) says, “Population is the group of interest to the researcher, the group to which she or he would like the result of the study to be generalized”. It means that population is total object or numbers that should be studied in the research.

In this research, the population needed for the 2007/2008 sixth year students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa. There are three classes and each class consists of 40 students. So, there are 120 students of the whole sixth class.

TABEL 3.2

Distribution of Research Population

No. Class Number of students

1. VI A 40

2. VI B 40

3. VI C 40

(23)

Arikunto (1993:109)states “A sample is a limited number of elements selected from a population to be representative of that population”. It means that not all the population to be respondents. Therefore, the writer of this thesis only chooses 10 students from each class. So, the whole of the respondents in this research are 30 students. It is 25 %. The reason for taking this number based on Arikunto’s idea (1993:120) says that if the population consists of a large number (more than 100), the sample can be taken from 10 % - 15 % or 20 % - 25 % or more, it depends on the ability of the researcher by considering her energy, time, and funds.

Based on the quotation above, the sample used to represent the population in this research is adequate. They are not classified on the basis of their grade of intelligence. Therefore, all of them have the same opportunity to be selected as the sample.

In obtaining the sample, I use random sampling technique considering what Gay (1987:104) says that random sampling is the best single way to obtain a representative sample. It is presented by giving the paper to the students. The students who get the paper with the word “congratulation” are the respondents.

3.3. The Instruments of Collecting the Data

The way of collecting data plays an important role in conducting any kind of research so that the result of the study will be valid. In this research, the data are collected by a written test in multiple-choice form on personal pronouns. The test is conducted by giving 30 questions about personal pronouns that consists of 15 questions for subject pronouns and 15 questions for object questions to each student. And the students must choose one correct answer.

(24)

Since this research is dealing with the students’ ability to use personal pronouns, so I take the whole questions from their handbook.

1 point

3.4. Scoring the Test

In scoring the test, I determine the cumulative score ranging 0-100. I give one point for one question. And to find out the score of the students’ answer, I use this following formula:

X =

×100

N R

In which:

X means Individual score

R means The number of correct answers N means Number of questions

(25)

To categorize the level of the students’ ability in using personal pronouns, the following scale is used:

The Score of Ability Category

80-100 Very good

60-79 Good

40-59 Average

20-39 Poor

0-19 Very poor

(Nurkancana and Sumartana, 1986)

Mean score of the students’ ability in answering the test can be calculated by using the following formula:

X = N

X

In which:

X = mean score

X = the total of correct number N = the number of respondents

And the percentage of the classification of the students’ ability in answering the test can be calculated by using the following formula:

(26)

P =

×100

r f

%

In which:

P means Percentage

f means number of frequency

r means Total numbers of respondents

3.5. The Purpose of the Test

Nurkancana and Sumartana (1986:25) state that test is one way to hold a research that forms a task that should be done by students or a group of students in order to get score about their behavior or prestige, that can be compared with score achieved by another student or with standard score that was made. In this research, the purpose of the test is to measure the students’ ability in using personal pronouns. After analyzing the result of the test, I will see what extend they are able to use personal pronouns as subject and object.

3.6. The Administration of Test

The test was held at SDN. No. 101878 Tg. Morawa on Saturday, 24th February 2008. It was done by the sixth year students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa. The time provided for finishing the test was 60 minutes.

(27)

3.7. Research Procedures

Before the test was begun, I gave the attendance list which should be filled by thirty students who are selected randomly. After that, I gave the test to them.

After the prepared time has been over, I collected the answer-sheet.

3.8. The Validity and the Reliability of the Test

3.8.1. The Validity of the Test

According to Gay (1987: 198), “The validity of the questionnaire is probably not done more often because it is not easy and requires much additional time and effort. However, the appropriate validation procedure for a given questionnaire will depend upon the nature of the instrument”.

Based on the quotation above and also the explanation about the test before, I consider that the test is valid. In this research, I prepare the test is not difficult and not too easy. I set the test that relates the curriculum. The test that was given for the 2008 years students of SDN No. 101878 has the content of validity because the questions of the test are from their handbook. In additional, I use the face validity in which the students understand and work the test seriously for the test is relevant to their materials. It means that the instrument is valid.

3.8.2. The Reliability of the Test

Reliability is one of the characteristics of good test. It refers to the consistency of the measurement. Nurkancana and Sumaratana (1986:131) state, “The reliability of a test

is the extend to which it gives consistent result when applied by different people or on different occasions”. It means that if the scores of the students are stable after applying it by different people or on different occasions then the test is reliable. But, if the score tends to fluctuate too much, the test is unreliable.

In this research, I have treated the 2008 sixth year students equally. I prepared thirty questions and for each item would be given one point. So, every student will get scores as she/he could. I examined their answer-sheets in the same way. So, to obtain the reliability of the test, I will use the following formula suggested by Kuder – Richarson:

(KR) r =

DATA ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH FINDINGS

4.1. The Analysis of Data

In order to find out the result of the test, the writer applies the Standard Deviation (SD) rules. For this purpose, I need to tabulate the scores of each student firstly. While tabulating the raw scores of each student, I write down the correct answer with their scores in using personal pronouns as subject and object.

The calculation of mean is: X =

After knowing the Mean and the Standard Deviation, then I calculated the coefficient of the reliability:

The calculation above shows that the reliability of the teat is 0,81. So, the reliability of the test is high. It is based on Arikunto (1986:93), the standard of reliability is:

0,00 – 0,40 = The reliability is low 0,41 – 0,70 = The reliability is significant 0,71 – 0,90 = The reliability is high 0,91 – 1,00 = The reliability is very high

5. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1. Conclusion

The objective of this research is to find out to what extend the sixth year students of SDN No. 101878 Tg. Morawa are able to use personal pronouns as subject and object in sentences. And based on the result that I get, I can give some conclusion as follow:

1. The students who have very good ability in using personal pronouns as subject are 11 students (36,7% out of 30 respondents). 9 students (30% out of 30 respondents) have good ability in using personal pronouns as subject. 6 students (20% out of 30 respondents) have average ability in using personal pronouns as subject. 4 students (13,3% out of 30 respondents) have poor ability in using personal pronouns as subject.

2. Meanwhile, the total score of the whole respondents in using personal pronouns as subject is 2006,3. It means that the mean score of the whole respondents is 66,88. So, they have good ability in using personal pronouns as subject.

3. The students who have very good ability in using personal pronouns as object are 13 students (43,3% out of 30 respondents). 8 students (26,7% out of 30 respondents) have good ability in using personal pronouns as object. 4 students (13,3% out of 30 respondents) have average ability in using personal pronouns as object. 5 students (16,7% out of 30 respondents) have poor ability in using personal pronouns as object.

(43)

4. Meanwhile, the total score of the whole respondents in using personal pronouns as object is 2020,1. It means that the mean score of the whole respondents is 67,34. So, they have good ability in using personal pronouns as object.

5. The students who have very good ability in using personal pronouns are 12 students (40% out of 30 respondents). 7 students (23,3% out of 30 respondents) have good ability in using personal pronouns. 8 students (26,7% out of 30 respondents) have average ability in using personal pronouns. 3 students (10% out of 30 respondents) have poor ability in using personal pronouns.

6. The total score of the whole respondents in using personal pronouns is 2015. It means that the mean score of the whole respondents is 67,17. So, they have good ability in using personal pronouns both as subject and object.

5.2. Suggestion

I suggest to the readers that they should improve and enrich your knowledge about personal pronouns by studying well and doing the exercises which are dealing with personal pronouns both as subject and object. For the teachers, they should give more exercises to the students about personal pronouns.
