Abstract
The presence and absence of L1 in EFL classroom has been controversial issue
among monolingual and bilingual proponents in education field. This study analyzed
teachers‟ reasons toward the presence of L1 use in English classroom using Cook (2008) and

Tang (2002) framework. The data in this study was obtained from interviews with two
English teachers at SMPN2 Banyubiru. The result revealed that the English teachers used L1
for many reasons, such as L1 use helped students to understand material, helped students to
complete task, and also to decreased stress and to increase students‟ motivation to learn
English.
