PART A:
READING (15 MARKS)
Read the text below and answer all the questions.
I

The next time your mother nags you to get off the sofa and do some exercise, tell
her that watching a comedy on TV will actually reduce your risk of a heart attack.
We've actually known for some time now that laughing makes people feel good by
relaxing them physically and emotionally. More recent research findings suggest
that laughter has many health benefits.

II

5

A study released by German gelotologist, Professor Gunther Sickl, revealed that a
one-minute guffaw had the same health benefits as a 45-minute gym workout. Up

to 80 muscles are used during a hearty laugh. A good belly laugh exercises the
diaphragm, contracts the abdominal muscles and even works out the shoulders;
these actions leave muscles more relaxed afterward.

III

10

Laughter can increase the blood flow in your arteries, just like aerobics exercise
does. Blood pressure rises, the heart beats faster and blood oxygen levels
increase. When the laughter stops, these effects return to levels closer to the
normal rates. In 2005, researchers from the University of Maryland School of
Medicine in Baltimore asked 20 healthy volunteers to watch a comedy. Two days

15

later they viewed a tragic war movie. After each movie, the researchers used
ultrasound to measure physical changes in blood vessels. They showed that on
average, blood flow increased 22 percent after the comedy and decreased 35
percent after the war film. The head of the research team, Professor Michael

Miller, explained that laughter appeared to cause the endothelium, the tissue that

20

forms the inner lining of blood vessels, to expand; as a result, blood flow
increases. In this way, laughter could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,
he explained.
IV

Laughter affects the endocrine system in ways which benefit you. The endocrine
system is a collection of organs which release hormones. When you laugh, these 25
organs will respond by reducing the level of stress hormones in the body. At the
same time, they will increase health-enhancing hormones like endorphins and

neurotransmitters.

Laughter and the endocrine system can therefore work

together to make you a happier and more relaxed person.
V

According to a Norwegian study published in the International Journal of 30
Psychiatry in Medicine in December 2006, people who are suffering lifethreatening diseases have better chances of survival if they can laugh easily. The
researchers invited 52 patients with kidney failure who were on dialysis to answer
questions designed to measure their tendency to laugh. For instance, a question
would describe a situation that different people might see as either funny or

35

annoying. The patient would be asked whether he or she would laugh or get

angry. The study found that if a patient scored higher on sense of humour, he had
a better chance of survival.

VI

Therefore, a generous dose of laughter every day is good for health. "Watch at
least one funny film daily," Professor Miller recommends, "though we'd suggest
watching while on an exercise bicycle."

40

There are many ways to generate

humour. We could go to the movies with friends or watch a sitcom on television.
Having friends over at one's home for snacks and a chat is also an effective way
of having a jovial time of giggles and laughter. The contagious effects of laughter
ensure that you will laugh more than you otherwise would if you had done these

45

activities alone; in addition, you will have jokes to refer to at later times to remind
each other of what a good time all of you had.
So, besides watching your diet, keeping track of your cholesterol and exercising,
add one more thing to your 'ensuring a healthy-heart'

list - a good dose of

laughter.
