Abstract

In the last four years, 794 cases of human trafficking were at least recorded in West Java.
The victims of human trafficking from West Java are documented as the highest in Indonesia.
Frauds and kidnapping are methods mostly used by external party, while threats, violence and
abuse are ways often carried out by internal party (family), in children trafficking. Frauds and
kidnappings occur in a process of interaction between children and kidnappers that ends up in
a lost or regret in the victim’s side. Concerted efforts from various parties to protect and
prevent children and teenagers from frauds and kidnappings that end up in human trafficking
should be seriously considered as an urgent priority. "Do not talk to strangers" is a phrase
that is commonly taught to children in the United States to prevent children from interactions
with unknown person that frequently causing kidnappings. Perhaps, it’s time for the children
of Indonesia, especially in West Java where being friendly to other people were taught as a
form of hospitality, the idea of “do not talk to strangers” should be widely introduced, not
only in the context of face to face interactions, but also in the interactions using mediated
communication, such as social media.
