Abstract

This is an action research aiming to improve the English vocabulary teaching in
the EFL classroom of the second year kindergarten. The participants of this study
were 33 kindergarten students (16 boys and 17 girls) of a private kindergarten in
Salatiga, Central Java. The data of this study were collected through teaching
journals and vocabulary test results. The results of this study are summarized in
three findings. First, songs can be used as media to help teachers teach

vocabulary. Through singing, students frequently repeat the words that make them
memorize the words longer. Second, through singing activities, teachers can
easily grab and draw the students’ attention to the lessons. Teachers do not need
to spend a lot of effort to make the students stay focused on the topic. Third,
action research makes a teacher more reflective. By constantly reflecting on my
own teaching, I became a better teacher. However, as this action research project
is limited only to my teaching situation, the result cannot be applicable to other

contexts. Teachers with a similar problem can use my research as an example of
conducting action research to improve teaching strategies.
