ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to find out the teachers’ teaching method in EFL class. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 06 Purwokerto on February until March 2018. Descriptive qualitative was used as a method of this research in which the participants were three English teachers of SMP Negeri 06

Purwokerto. The data were obtained from observation and interview. The result from observation were analyzed to reveal the teachers’ teaching method in EFL

class. After analyzing the data, it was found that there were three main methods applied by teachers. They were Grammar Translation Method (GTM) with 80.95%, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) with 76.19% and Community Language Learning (CLL) with 47.62%. It was followed by Direct Method (DM) with 35.71%, Audio Lingual Method (ALM) with 33.33%, Silent Way (SW) with 28.57%, and Total Physical Response (TPR) with 16.67%. Each method had different purposes such as asking students to translate some texts or words, making students become active learners, and ordering students to work in a group. Regarding to the application of the method in a class, there were some ways used by teachers, such as mixing the instruction in the class using Indonesian and English, encouraging students to always speak using English, and dividing students into some groups.
