SCHOOL STUDENTS PUBLISHED BY MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE

2014. A Thesis. ENGLISH EDUCATION DPARTMENT TEACHER TRAINING AND

EDUCATION FACULTY SEBELAS MARET UNIVERSITY SURAKARTA 2018.

  This research is a content anaysis research. The main objectives of the research are to:

(1) discover whether Bahasa Inggris for 1st grade Senior High School Students meets the

characteristics of good English textbook; and (2) find out whether Bahasa Inggris for 1st grade

Senior High School Students contains scientific approach or not.

  This study is a content analysis research and was carried out at SMA N 7 Surakarta. The

technique to find out whether the textbook fulfils the criteria of good textbook or not the researcher

using questionnaire and interview. Two evaluators from SMA N 7 Surakarta were asked to

evaluate the textbook using the selected criteria. The evaluators were asked to fill out a

questionnaire. In addition, they were interviewed. The students from SMA N 7 Surakarta were

asked about their impression about the textbook by a questionnaire and interview. Lastly, the

researcher made conclusions that were made based on the data analysis result. The procedure

used to find out the implementation of scientific approach is adapted from Elliot and Timulak

(2005) which comprises: data preparation, delineating and processing meaning units, finding an

overall organizing structure of the data, generation of categories, abstracting the main findings.

  The findings of this research are: (1)Bahasa Inggris meets 2 of 6 citeria of good textbook.

It means that there are 4 criteria that are not fulfilled by Bahasa Inggris, they are: language skills,

language component, content and design/lay out. (2) The implementation of scientific approach in

the textbook is 80 % and it is classified as “good”. The detail in every chapter gains score 80%.
