The Extraction of the Impacted Mandibular Third Molar Due to
Pericoronitis (A Research Study Done at the Department of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery in RSHS, Bandung from the Period of January 2010 to
December 2012) – Leong Hui Lynn – 160110103017

ABSTRACT

Pericoronitis is an inflammatory condition of the gingiva and other
supporting tissues that surround the crown of a completely or incompletely
erupted tooth. The impacted mandibular third molar is the third molar at the lower
jaw that is partially erupted or unerupted, beyond the chronological date of
eruption, and will not eventually assume a normal relationship with the other teeth
and tissues. Impacted third molar extraction is a procedure of extracting or
removing the impacted mandibular third molar from its sockets by means of
simple extraction or surgical extraction (odontectomy).
The research method used was a descriptive study method, where medical
records of patients with the impacted mandibular molar with the presence of
pericoronitis who was treated at the Oral & Maxillofacial Department at RSHS
from the period of January 2010 to December 2012 was taken as my sample. The
purpose of this research is to analyze the datas obtained from this research to
support my hypothesis.
The result of the data’s obtained from the medical records show that there
were many patients who were diagnosed with perixoronitis underwent the
extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar. In conclusion, a total of 114
out of 145 patients (78.62%) went for the extraction of impacted third mandibular
third molar due to pericoronitis.
